New Year's Eve 2008

Lover, you just come now

He has come, look look he has come!

Lover, you just come now
My spirit flames like a blaze, come and extinguish it
So my body's flame becomes cold, embrace me in that way

For these thirsty thirsty lips of mine
Your lips have made a thousand promises
If one who forgets is to live then how will he live
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes yes

Lover, you just come now
My spirit flames like a blaze, come and extinguish it
So my body's flame becomes cold, embrace me in that way

If your kindness remains on my condition
I even accept that reason, oh dear
For which you touched my footsteps
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes yes

Lover, you just come now
My spirit flames like a blaze, come and extinguish it
So my body's flame becomes cold, embrace me in that way

My exact same sentiments. I thought it was a very nice random poem.

I'm lightning fast in most of my searches. I could also probably find everything ever lost in a country song. ;)

LSPoorEeyorick 09-19-2008 12:56 PM

It is actually possible we will be in town on NYE. For the first time since I've known all of you!

Sounds like Som€one is getting lucky New Years Eve 2008.

And to help set the mood....

Morrigoon 09-19-2008 01:03 PM

Heh, in light of previous mentions of a "LoT goes to hell" theme, I figured it was some poem about the devil. Shows what I know.

Not Afraid 09-19-2008 01:06 PM

This is what NYE will be like. Just like this.

Disneyphile 09-19-2008 01:09 PM

Ya know, there is a Bollywood dance school around here... ;)

Stan4dSteph 09-19-2008 01:14 PM

I seriously think those of who can should choreograph a huge production number to perform. Perhaps in the middle of the street!

Choreographed Bollywood Trouser Drop - I think this is an achievable goal

I'm also going to plan a pre-NYE outing to "get us in the mood".

Well, maybe because your first reply didn't include that quote? All I saw was "somebody's getting lucky" when I first read it and I didn't go back to see if you'd changed it! ;)

Just for the record, I did not edit the post. The link was included. Still nothing to worry about either way...

LSPoorEeyorick 09-19-2008 02:24 PM

Oh! Then I must've overlooked it there at the bottom the first time - sorry for my error! And I'm quick to mock people who re-post things, so let me take a moment to mock myself.

Isn't it New Year's Eve 2009? I thought we did New Year's Eve 2008 back at the end of last year.

I'm only half being a curmudgeon, do we refer to New Year's Eve by the new year of which it is the eve, or by the year in which we start the party? Inquiring minds and all that.

CoasterMatt 09-21-2008 10:20 PM

Well, how many years has it been the "Year of a Million Dreams"?

innerSpaceman 09-22-2008 08:01 AM

FYI, New Years Eve is referred to by the outgoing year, and New Years Day by the incoming.

Continue.

BarTopDancer 09-22-2008 09:11 AM

Technically, the party is BOTH in 2008 AND 2009. So there. And, it's my party I can call it what I want to.

Curmudgeon be damned. ;)

Gemini Cricket 09-22-2008 01:29 PM

I love this one.

and of course there's Maahi Ve. I loooove this one, too. Or try this link they're not so squished in this one.

Gemini Cricket 09-22-2008 01:40 PM

In fact, NA, you should show Kal Ho Na Ho (where the Maahi Ve song is from) at the party. I liked it a lot.

Not Afraid 09-22-2008 01:48 PM

The scary thing is that I'm starting to recognize Bollywood stars from other films I've seen. The actor in the Maahi Ve is the star of a film we will be watching on NYE - Om Shanti Om - which I posted some clips from earlier.

From the same film as Maahi Ve is a version of the Orbison classic "Pretty Woman".

I will if I can find a copy that's ot $53. I may have to stop by my new favorite video store in Artesia on Wednesday. I suspect they will know me on a first name basis by the end of this year.

Not Afraid 09-22-2008 01:54 PM

This is a clip from one of the most amazing dance scenes From Jewel Thief - the 3 hour Hitchcock/Bond/Gaslight film that we may subject you all to. This is an amazing piece of .......something.

BTW, the star of Jewel Thief looks a bit like Cary Grant but also looks a bit like Todd.

Well, if people take off on Friday as well as NYD Thursday then it may be even longer than the party that ended on the 2nd (or was it the 3rd?).

Someone better, since I'll probably be leaving for work on that Friday morning, and when I return on Friday evening I'll need some nice hot slabs of bacon. :D

OH... also this year should I plan on Strawberries Fitzgerald (strawberries soaking in champagne and orange juice, white sugar, butter, flamed with maraschino liqueur and served over cream cheese-filled crepes)?

Or the traditional Bananas Foster?

Keep in mind that with the first one, we can make sugar bindis on our foreheads and lick them off of each other. Now that's good Bollywood!

Not Afraid 09-22-2008 04:38 PM

Do you know any flaming desserts that include guava, mango, dates or coconut? Maybe adding some cardamom flavor to the mix would Sub-Continent it up.

Oh man, I can only say one thing to you, NA, India Sweet House on Pico (near La Cienega). Their Rabri is nectar of the gods! Thick, sweet, creamy and just a touch of pistachio nuts on top. They have all varieties of indian sweets, gulab jamen, jelebi, the besan ladoo are my favorite, (like eating sweet sand, gritty and delivious) many kinds of burfee, you name it. They are kosher Indian and they do not take short cuts and use only whole milk and sugar and whatever.

Yelp review.

OMG, they have a website

I go there almost every time I am in LA and bring stuff home in the car (ion a cooler) or on the plane. In fact, I am drooling right now just thinking abou them!

If you go into the shop, their dosas are pretty good too, as well as the bhel poori. I just had lunch, I cannot be this hungry! Gah!

Also the nut mixes (with hot chili are awesome) this is a not to miss spot for me. Waaaaaahhhhhhh........

Not Afraid 09-23-2008 02:27 PM

OK, We are in the process of finalizing the E-Invitation for the event. We are using a different program to electronically handle the invitation. my feeling is that Evite hasn't made changes to their program in YEARS and they suck.

We'll be using program called "Anyvite" this year.

When we send out the invite I will post here.

Please do the following:
  1. Check your email
  2. If the invite isn't there, check your spam folder
  3. if the invite isn't there, PM me your email address - I may have missed you (and NO you're not being snubbed).
  4. Once you receive your Invite, please RSVP.
If you have any questions or have issues with the invitation system, please let either Chris or i know ASAP.

OK, Wenchybeth, you're invited.

I still haven't done anything about an outfit for this. Ah well, I'll sort something out.

I think we should start when it's midnight for the Lashpair and end when it's midnight for Gemini Cricket. That should cover it.

Disneyphile 12-31-2008 11:58 AM

Last night, I decided I was too wiped out to even start on making my Salwar Kamiz for tonight.

However, I woke up this morning with a nice bit of energy, and some strange feeling that I needed to do it. I just finished cutting it out... without the use of a pattern or even pictures. I used a tape measure and a Sharpie to mark a few cutting points.

This is my very first project without the use of any kind of pattern or construction plans (like with the Yip Yip costumes). I can't wait to see how it turns out! And, looking at how it's pinning together... it looks to be a success so far.

Go me! :D

It's weird though - not sure where this little bit of knowledge is stemming from.

Morrigoon 12-31-2008 12:06 PM

Well, you spent enough time seeing how simply they are constructed. I'm impressed that you did the sleeves with no guide though!

Aww, sorry to hear that. Tom is also sick, so we'll only be there for an abbreviated stay tonight (we're not sure how long.)

lindyhop 12-31-2008 02:22 PM

Sick, yeah. I'm staying home, too, to spare everyone my germs. Damn cold.

Chernabog 12-31-2008 02:29 PM

I may be working tonight. So who knows, maybe my roommate and my boyfriend will be there without me.

Morrigoon 12-31-2008 04:38 PM

If anyone in OC is looking to have henna done this afternoon before the party, PM Sohrshah (or PM me and I'll send you her phone number). It needs time to dry, so the sooner the better!

Yes, I'm coming down with a cold and I'm at work today. It sucks to be me.

40 minutes to go.......

Gn2Dlnd 01-01-2009 04:37 AM

Fantastic party, truly the best-dressed LoT event yet! Indian clothing flatters the, shall we say, more generous physique! Thank you again, to NA and € for opening your home. Beautiful draperies hung from the ceiling, hand decorated gift bags, and gorgeous food. I've always wanted New Year's Eve to be a cross between Times Square, and the Poseidon Adventure. Every year you guys put on a shindig that far surpasses my meager imagination! And thank you so much, for the anniversary acknowledgment. It means more to me than I can possibly express.

Happy New Year!

wolfy999 01-01-2009 08:10 AM

Sorry I missed the party, but I got extended till Midnight, so no chance of joining up with the festivities. Did get to see the glow of fireworks over DL though...woohoo! The fog did a number on the 68000+ folks that showed up. Now getting ready to return....on 4 hours of sleep. Hoping with my senority next year I'll have the two days off.

Pics?

Morrigoon 01-01-2009 09:55 AM

Awesome party as always! And the clothes really were fabulous, I hope to see many of them re-used at future LoT parties.

Sorry I had to scoot out pre-bacon, but have a good time at the 2nd half of the party ;)

alphabassettgrrl 01-01-2009 11:18 AM

I took a few pictures. I'll try to get them posted.

Thank you for a fantastic party!!! Loved spending the evening with you all. **hugs** to all who couldn't make it.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-01-2009 04:39 PM

I was way, WAY to exhausted to stop by this morning. Hope everyone had fun!

katiesue 01-01-2009 05:42 PM

Had a wonderful time. Huge thank you to the most wonderful hosts! Now to take nap for about a year.

Not Afraid 01-01-2009 09:37 PM

What? Where is everybody? The house is empty and almost clean! Is this really Jan. 1st? We didn't even order pizza! ;)

That you all who attended IRL and via other electronic means. I hope people were able to connect to us one way or another. Chris set up a web cam on his laptop and NM and EH were doing interpretative readings of the Kama Sutra (well, maybe "interpretative" isn't the right word).

It is always joy to spend NYE with all of you. Thank you!

So far, I've found 2 purple towels.....and lots of lost sequins. :)

Kevy Baby 01-01-2009 09:47 PM

Another great party - thank you to our hosts for another wonderful shindig and thank you to all of our fellow guests for making it a wonderful event.

Wow, those Bollywood movies are lllloooonnnngggg.

BarTopDancer 01-01-2009 09:52 PM

Thank you to our wonderful hosts! I had a fabulous time.

I think the towels belong to NM and EH. I have all my stuff ;)

€uroMeinke 01-01-2009 10:14 PM

I had a great time but as always felt I spent too little time with everyone - where does it go?

Thanks for letting me conduct some mixology experiments, I love vintage cocktails and love to share them.

But a full 24 hours have passed and it's just Lisa and me - we certainly can't find longer movies to keep you all captive. I had fun with the whole Bollywood extravaganza, everyone looked great (Kurtas seem to be made for lounging), and Kudos to those of you who tried to emulate the dance moves. I took a few pics before things got going, I'll try to post those soon. I hope those of you who took lots of pictures will share them.

Thanks everyone for sharing the New Year with us.

andf here they are again where you can see a bit more of the decorations

Morrigoon 01-01-2009 11:35 PM

The decorations were truly fabulous.

So was everyone's clothing.

Thanks NA and Euro, for a great NYE, as always!

JWBear 01-02-2009 12:00 AM

Lisa looks stunning!

LSPoorEeyorick 01-02-2009 09:55 AM

It was a truly beautiful party that had the very pleasing by-product of bringing me out of a rut just in time to fly to New York for a jaunty vacation. Truth and beauty (and laughter)... (and samosas).... the best medicine. Happy new year, all of you terrific swanktastic folks.

Kevy Baby 01-02-2009 10:38 AM

I will post my pictures later, but did anyone get a picture of Susan and I?

Cadaverous Pallor 01-02-2009 11:40 AM

I'm kinda bummed that I didn't think of getting a photo of each person's amazing outfit, red carpet style.

MouseWife 01-02-2009 12:02 PM

That would have been great, Chris, next time. :snap:

Everyone looks great! The house looks faaaabulous!!!

I didn't know I had so many friends from Bollywood. ;)

Kevy Baby 01-02-2009 12:59 PM

BTW: I think our calculations may be off, but after Chris and I were done cooking, we think we cooked about 9-10 pounds of bacon (although in retrospect, I think it was less than that).

I do know that about a third of it was consumed on the back patio (our bacon cooking zone) before it even got into the house. I know our combined first batch (two pans and one griddle's worth) disappeared about 30 seconds after it hit the holding tray.

Not Afraid 01-02-2009 01:05 PM

We had about 8 pieces leftover - one of which was stolen by Sid who nabbed it and ran off. I blame Susan for introducing him to bacon. He is now a monster.

Whatever you do.... don't ever give him much of it, because the salt irritates their tummies. That lesson was learned with Nala a day after she consumed quite a bit of Christmas ham. Biggest. Mess. Ever.

Oh, no. No-no-no.

I clicked in here hoping to see that someone had posted <even more> photos of the fabulous swankiness. But no. It was just another bacon story. And not the good kind.

I should have said more photos. I wish I could have been there, but since I could not make it, I have an insatiable desire to see as much of it as I can. I also neglected to say how great everyone looked in the photos so far.

These events used to have flashbulbs going off constantly but it seems the paparazzi effect has died down in recent years. I made an effort to pull the camera out this time, and even then I don't think I took enough photos.

Morrigoon 01-02-2009 10:58 PM

I took way fewer photos than I thought, and missed some people entirely, which I'm disappointed about, and I apologize. But here's what I have:
Spoiler:

Closest thing I have to a photo of myself. It's really just my makeup (pre-bindi) and the jewelry I made (which is beaded trim, made into a necklace and earrings)

Motorboat Cruiser 01-03-2009 12:23 AM

Wow, great photos! So bummed that I missed out, especially since I was only a couple of miles away, playing at the surprisingly swanky Madison Hotel in downtown Long Beach. I tried to listen for Indian music off in the distance during my breaks, but let's just say that things were a little crazy downtown.

Case in Point: I've never actually seen a paddy wagon before until that night! (exterior only, I assure.) It seemed to be quite full too. Of course, better that it was at my location rather than yours. :)

Looks like everyone had a wonderful time, not that I would expect otherwise. Hopefully, I will have better luck next year.

Ok, that's it. Next time we have a themed party, I promise I will take full photos of everyone's outfits.

Gee, thanks :) I thought everyone had fabulous outfits though! I was impressed at the number of men who got in the act too (considering they had to work harder to find the cool stuff)

Yeah, but our stuff (at least the outfit I got) is generally less expensive (my top and pants outfit was only $30, although my scarf was almost twice that )
