LA Weekly Detour Festival
Is next Saturday and set times are available

Hehehe, i don't know any of these bands .... so my planned itinerary for the day is to accept the recommentations of the swankers we'll be in pleasant company with.
|
I don't know the whole day yet, but this will be part of it:
♪♪ City Hall - Stage A ♪♪ The Mae Shi 2:55 PM 3:40 PM ♫♫ Hall of Justice - Stage C ♫♫ Bitter:Sweet 4:55 PM 5:45 PM ♥♥Triforium - Stage B ♥♥ Gogol Bordello 6:30 PM 8:30 PM Maybe I'll have some time this week to check out some of the other band's My Space pages |
uh-oh, two bands besides Gogol posted, and already one's a conflict with the Gogol Bordello show (I can't imagine being able to catch Bitter:Sweet at quarter to six and have a remotely good place to see Gogol Bordello at six-thirty.)
|
Chris' itinerary is my cuppa tea. Those three are the reasons I purchased the tickets. May need to leave after Gogol to go to a cocktail and dessert party at my aunt's place, but I haven't committed to that, yet. May play it by ear depending on how E and I are feeling later in the evening.
|
I don't know Bitter:Sweet, but I'll take anyone's word for it they're a band to see (er, hear). But how can we see them at 5:45 and also see Gogol Bordello on a different stage at 6:30?
(I was also thinking of leaving after Gogol, because I want to take public transportation into Downtown ... but then I'd miss the other headliner, Mars Volta ... though I don't know squat about them. A heard a song by them a week or so ago. Neither floored nor disgusted. I'd certainly give them a shot, but not if it means getting stuck downtown after the trains stop running. How's everyone else planning on transport???) |
I am planning on dragging NM onto the Metro kicking and screaming. If he'll let me. Heh. :)
|
Quote:
Would that I could go, but we'll be at Dodger Stadium that evening, hopefully watching the Dodgers crush the Cubs. |
We're taking the Metro in. I may stick around for Mars Volta, but we'll see how wiped I am from the day. Actually, its more of the previous week that I'm worried about killing me.
The Mai Shi is crazy, energetic, insane fun. Bitter:Sweet is pure chill. And, we all know GB. GD's right, the time between sets is a luxury. |
Oh Gosh, I'm sorry. I read 5:45 as the START time, not the end time. D'uh. Ok, chill time with Bitter:Sweet it is. Perhaps we'll need some before Sweat Bath Time with Gogol Bordello.
|
Well no need for further band research for me. If this weather holds up, we're not planning on getting there till around 4:00. Time only for Bitter:Sweet, Gogol and The Mars Volta.
Still have no idea how we're getting there and back. |
Don't worry I think it's supposed to rain
|
I hear it actually is supposed to get way cooler. I generally put zero stock in L.A.-area weather prediction, but ..... please, please, please, please.
I would like to enjoy more of the festival. But a crowded downtown Los Angeles is not my choice spot for one of these Orbiting-Closer-to-the-Sun days we're having just now. |
It will not cool down until after Yom Kippur.
|
According to weather.com today, there's a 30% chance of rain, with a high of 64 and a low of 55 . I've never seen a concert in the rain before.

bad Jew. Going to my room |
Um, the weather man I trust has been right 85% percent of the time, a far better average than official sources.
His name: ZAPPPOP. Yes, a cold front is on the way. Associated with zero moisture to result in precipitation. Hooray! |
I can't believe I'm missing Gogol Bordello again. I still haven't managed to see them perform.
I'm going to wish for a little rain, though. Just a little. |
Pru, why don't you join us?

Here's our list: Noah & The Whale (1:30-2:15 on Stage C) THE MAE SHI!!!!!! (2:55-3:40 on Stage A) Datarock (4:05-4:55 on Stage B) Bitter:Sweet (4:55-5:45 on Stage C) we'll split this set a little early Matt Costa (5:15-6:05 on Stage A) GOGOL BORDELLO!!!!! (6:30-8:30 on Stage B) since I know that anybody following Gogol Bordello is destined to disappoint, we're going to split before The Mars Volta - don't want to repeat my recent Hollywood Bowl experience... |

|
I think we're splitting after Gogol Bordello as well
|
Yes, we're leaving after that. We're going to catch the train about 12-12:30 which will put us there about 1:45. We'll call.
|
We're thinking of staying for The Mars Volta, but we'll see how we feel after Gogol Bordello.
Probably hitting the area around 2-2:30. No Not Afraid wand in sight means we'll call. |
We have been ...... delayed.
Probable arrival: Three-Threethirty-ish. |
Well that was fun. The weather was perfect, and walking into the venue I was just filled with an overwhelming sensation of pure happiness. Noah and the whale was a perfect way to start the day, and I left the train tonight with the Mae Shi running through my head. Gogol Bordello, rocked as usual even the part of being squeezed on all sides by a crowd pogoing in unison. Data Rock was also a great show to see even if they don't all look Norwiegen. Bitter:Sweet was my one disappointment, love the band and their sound but the mix in the festival was very off.
I took lots of photis and will no doubt post some of my favorites of the day. I'll definately watch for this event next year. |
Following your tweets was fun, all.

Well, I think that was my last Gogol Bordello show. I am a complete cripple today.
|
While my back hurts, that may be just from sleeping in a soft bed. But, no more GB? Never!
I'm so grateful that Saturday was cold and moist. Sitting out in my front yard in the heat today nearly killed me. I can't imagine what Detour would've been like. |
Yep, my thoughts exactly when I was outside today. Love the Detour Gods.
Well, if Gogol Bordello takes a decent break from playing in L.A., I'll try to have my legs and feet forget. Of course, I could just sway like everybody else ... but, um, NO. |
|
I do regret not stepping into the DJ stage in the courtyard of City Hall. And the debit card thing sucked - and would have even more if there was much of a crowd. I still think Gogol Bordello rocked and I had a great time.
|
I'd agree with almost everything in that article. I'm sure, even though I caught 5 or so acts, and some good ones amongst 'em, i missed the few rare standouts.
The debit cards were lousy, the environment rather bleak and uninteresting (except, 'natch, the Triforium), and yeah, Gogol Bordello was not at the top of their game. A million pounds of fun anyway! In fact the whole day was enjoyable regardless of the small demerits. That there was so much going on in downtown that day rather added to the excitement somehow. Except that not being able to go to the Edison afterwards, on the only evening I'm likely to ever be a block away, was a big, unforgiveable demerit. Damn you, Hillary. |
Awesome pictures, Chris!
