Not yet.

Morrigoon 10-30-2008 09:39 AM

But it could be...

I'm actually getting close to my new-every-2. And admittedly, am eyeing the Blackberry. But Motorola has a new Q out too.

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 09:45 AM

I think the appropriate electronic device for this thead is the Yenta.

OMG! What a perfect name for a PDA!!! I'd buy one just for the name alone!

Your Espionage Network and Training Academy?

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 12:33 PM

No, actually it's a misnomer, because a Yenta is not a matchmaker, but I guess the real Yiddish word for that is not as catchy.

It's a REAL device, but I guess didn't catch on. You enter all kinds of personal information and also information on what type of person you are looking for as a romantic interest. When you are in the vicinity of someone else who has a Yenta - and either you match their programmed desires or vice-versa, the device alerts you and displays the other person's information for you.

Electronic Matchmaker in Real Time.

I wanted one.

But, 'natch, unless a Whole Buncha people get one, it's useless. Maybe a future iPhone app???

(I think the device was a minor plot point in the movie Shortbus)

I thought that was the purpose of brightkite?

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 01:15 PM

Nah. Brightkite is for meetups.

Yenta is for fixups.

(And if brightkite was even useful for meeting new people, I'd use it. But it's not.)

The actual Yiddish definition of a Yenta is a gossiper or busybody. Blame Fiddler for its mutation into meaning matchmaker. The matchmaker character's was cleverly named Yenta.

Shadchen is the actual Yiddish word for matchmaker.

From Public Displays of Affection to phones to discussions about Yiddish.

Awesome.

Oh and the MQ sucks.

Kevy Baby 10-30-2008 02:28 PM

I'm guessing no one caught my Get Smart reference.

LOL woaaaah you need some work on your Yiddish :D

Morrigoon 10-30-2008 03:19 PM

Hey BTD, what's your opinion about this phone?

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 03:31 PM

Isaac's as goyish as they come ... but even I have no idea what that particular Yiddish translates to.

BUT ... I was very tickled to learn that the Mormon lad, Dallas, was a wee bit disturbed at the Halloween party to come upon the homo PDA between Prince Phillip and Prince Eric (aka Cherny and B.J.) which I'm assuming was at least a bit shy of a B.J.

And since his dad refuses to recant his intent to vote Yes on 8, my enjoyment of this scenario is my petty revenge. :p

I'm assuming your not talking about this Dallas?

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 04:36 PM

Ok, who is that?

But no, this Dallas is named for the character in Alien. He's 16-years old. A Mormon boy. Nice kid, but I guess he's being raised to be a sort-of bigot. Best to expose him to the seemier side of life (although isn't that what happens when they go out on their "Missions?")

Isaac 10-30-2008 04:40 PM

Missionary: It's not just a position.

"Gai feifen ahfen yam" translates to "Go peddle your fish elsewhere"... or so I have read.

Dallas Imbimbo (I kid you not - his real name). He and his mother (also pictured) are contestants in the current season of the Amazing Race.

"Gey kakn afn yam" loosely translates to "go take a sh*t in a lake/river" :) It's one of the more colorful ones.

Like the curse "Zoll vakhzen tsibili en zein pipik!", which roughly translates to "onions should grow in your bellybutton!" :D
