2008 Election Results
Yup, I'm starting it....because there are already some results.
What a cool tradition, I didn't even know about that. |

I predict the end of LoT as we know it once the elections are over. :)

CNN.com's homepage is all set up for Election Result shenanigans. I think I'll be watching that today and MSNBC.

I got to the polling place at 7:20 this morning. There were ~30 people in line ahead of me. It took me 40 minutes to get through it. Not too horrible.
There was one lady looking very confused and frustrated by the voting machine. A couple different workers came over to help her out. She still seemed a bit flustered, but to the credit of the workers, she walked out seemingly with a smile. Then I got to watch the drama as they tried to figure out if they had to fill out paperwork because they'd assisted her, or if they they didn't have to because it was only assistance with operation of the machine, not assistance in actually voting. |

The last few years, I have shown up at my polling place to vote when it opens at 7:00am. At most, there were 5-10 people in front of me. Last year I was actually first in line.
This year, however, when I arrived at 7, there were a hundred people in line! It took about an hour to get through and cast my votes. As much as I don't like waiting in line, I am exceedingly pleased to see that people are voting. Hopefully we'll break a turn-out record. |

I voted. Yay! Didn't even have to wait too long... although I was in and out lickety split once I got my ballot. What's up with the people in there for 15-20 minutes? Are they just deciding then what to vote for?
|
Kentucky:
60% McCain 38% Obama per CNN.com's map |
NH:
O: 67% M: 33% |
What were the deciding states again?
FL NV OH |
Those are both in line with polling, slightly tilted further in favor of the leader (realclearpolitics showed McCain at 54% in KY and Obama at 52% in NH).
|
OH, IN, PA, VA, FL among others
|
Quote:
fivethirtyeight.com points to NH and GA as early barometers for how things are going. He figures that if polls have been underestimating Obama's strength, it'll show up as a better showing in GA than predicted. If the polls have been overestimating, it'll show up as a weaker showing in NH. Those early returns from NH are a good sign for Obama by that reasoning. |
Per MSNBC - Obama 56-43 in IN! (way early still, of course)
|
1% reporting in IN shows Obama 56 to McCain 43! I know that you can't judge by 1% but, still, that's pretty great. I guess my sixteen-year-old nephew's campaigning in his home state may have paid off!
|
IN:
O: 55 M: 44 |
And just like that, IN is at 50-49 on MSNBC.
|
I voted today for the first time! Not only was it exciting, but I also got to yell, "That sign is disgusting!" to the person at the polling place holding a "Yes on 102" sign (AZ's version of 8), and "Fvck you!" to the person holding the sign at the corner. Sure it didn't change anything, but I felt better.
|
At 2% reporting. Spoke to soon, dammit.
|
Whoa, KY just jumped down to 51-48 McCain, and IN is at 50-48 O. It's gonna be a wild one for a while at least.
|
KY is still 51-48 with 9% in.
|
Both NBC and CNN have called Kentucky for McCain and Vermont for Obama.
|
So they have.
|
Why Vermont? I don't see any percentage tallied. I do see a pretty strong New Hampshire, though.
|
I think CNN is tallying Vermont in New Hampshire's part of the database. Hmm.
|
It's going to be a long night and I don't think I'm going to have any nails left by the end of it.
|
1% and McCain is up in Virginia. Damn.

|
Exit polls in GA have Obama trailing slightly. And contrary to the numbers from returns, Obama is leading in VA exit polling by a pretty good margin (54% to something)
|
VA - 55-44 with 2% in and KY has the same with 14% in.
This is not good :( |
Quote:
There's a LONG way to go. |
They are breaking it down by county on CNN and all things considered, Obama may be doing better than it looks.

|
Same story in Ohio, Obama's got about 54% in exit polling.
Update: McCain goes up in IN in the returns with 14%, but exit polling still favors Obama. Further Update: Obama up big (57-43) in Florida with 2%. No exit polling data Update some more: Dead heat in NC, both by returns and by exit polling |
Ugh. I hate this. I have a very bad feeling :(
|
But as we saw from Five Thirty Eight earlier, we should never, ever rely on exit polling. I'm still very, very uncomfortable.

Did anyone else have trouble voting today? The other half of my household was told he wasn't listed on the rolls and got the dreaded pink ballot, even though he has his registration card and the lavote.net website lists him as holding a current registration. It really annoys me that there's no way to deal with this. To shut you up they give you a provisional ballot, which is probably round-filed before you even leave the building, and you're left with no other recourse. I'm pretty pissed off for him.
|
Anyone watching NBC or MSNBC? They look like they're in some sort of video game. Computer background with columns, windows, homing beacon things...

I'll check the papers tomorrow to see the results.

CNN just called Texas for McCain. No surprise there.
|
I'm not sweating. After seeing those numbers, I started celebrating. :D
|
I'd like to come by and offer my congratulations to all of you. I suspect that pretty much everyone around here is happy with the result that are coming in. Some of you have worked hard and I'm glad to see that at least some of it...if not all...will be rewarded. I'm glad to know that some of my good friends will not have to experience the pain and heartache that I felt last March after working my pants off for my candidate in a losing effort. Congrats to y'all on a job well done. My hat goes off to y'all.

I have an awesome Poly Sci teacher. The assignments are horrible - 1500 word papers every 2 weeks, and the weeks between are 300 word papers. The word count isn't horrible, the type of papers they are, is. Let's just say I'd rather retake Stats then write these papers ;) Anyways, I had asked for an extension on last weeks assignment because I was really behind due to the election and Prop 8 stuff I was doing. I asked if I could turn it in on Thursday (tomorrow). Last night I didn't get it even started and knew there was no way I was going to get it done. I basically begged for an extension and asked him to confirm that my caculation in my grade for not doing it was correct. He wrote back with this Quote:

So, you guys see this Al Franken stuff? I can't believe he's gotten so far, and can't believe the douche he's running against actually claimed victory with a few hundred vote lead. (I've seen different figures everywhere, from 270 votes to 700 votes.) With 3 million cast for these guys, gimme a break. Thankfully it triggers a recount automatically.

Nebraska and Maine are the only two states that don't award their electoral votes in an all or nothing block.
Apparently it is looking like the slowly counted provisional and early mail ballots in Nebraska's Omaha district will be enough to tip that electoral vote to Obama. I blame name confusion, the locals thought they were checking where they lived. |
So I know it's only one election and all, but damn if fivethirtyeight.com didn't nail it! Within fractions of a percent on the popular vote, and called every electoral vote right except for Indiana and the Omaha district in Nebraska. Dude knows his statistics!

Even if they did elect an absolute ogre of a person.
That said, I don't think 58, 59, or 60 makes all that much difference except psychologically, since under most conditions you don't get absolute party unanimity. And not having exactly 60 might actually make things a bit easier for the Democratic whips. If they had 60 each Democratic senator would know that on any high profile party splitting bill they hold a lot of power to wring additional concessions for their district/state. This way they can say "well, we already need to get one Republican on board, and if we can do that we can get two and screw you." |

I agree with Moonie, the automakers need to stand or fall on their own. They've been producing crap vehicles for decades and now their pigeons are coming home to roost. They can either innovate and make their vehicles desirable again, or they can step down and make room for an upstart to come in with new ideas. Though I wish they'd spin off certain brands, like Saturn, before they tank completely. Saturns, while not the greatest vehicles ever made, fill their market segment quite well, and make a decent vehicle for the price range. I think it could stand on its own if not overburdened with having to support the parent company.
