7.8 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!

Is everyone ok?

lizziebith 11-13-2008 11:06 AM

Drill? :)

Isaac 11-13-2008 11:07 AM

There was an earthquake ?

Gn2Dlnd 11-13-2008 11:07 AM

Didja fall out of bed?

mousepod 11-13-2008 11:16 AM

Just watching the simulations made me nauseated.

Disneyphile 11-13-2008 11:18 AM

Ooops, sorry. I was doing some aerobics.

Next time, I'll wait until after I've lost a few pounds. ;)

innerSpaceman 11-13-2008 11:33 AM

I'm of course reminded of the total cellphone and internet service interruption I experience for over an hour when we had that tiny earthquake a couple of months ago.

So I don't need no simulation for The Big One. I know all about it. WE'RE FUCT.

Andrew 11-13-2008 11:34 AM

I was in the shower.

Text messaging and twitter worked great for me.

BDBopper 11-13-2008 11:43 AM

Shame on you for scaring me like that. Yikes!

Wow, Palm Springs is TOAST. I imagine their drills today must involve rubble clearing and emergency morgue procedures.

blueerica 11-13-2008 12:00 PM

You guys... -sigh-

I got freaked out. Not funny. Not. Funny. I do think we would have felt it or people would be crying/freaking out/calling what happened... we have a number of So Cal'ers in this building.

I do think that this scale of disaster preparedness is absolutely necessary, esp. for So Cal, and I applaud the effort.

alphabassettgrrl 11-13-2008 12:01 PM

I would have found it amusing had we had an actual quake.

And yes, texting works better than trying to make an actual call after disaster. Not perfect, but better.

JWBear 11-13-2008 12:22 PM

I appologize to the non-Southern Californians.

lashbear 11-13-2008 12:23 PM

I think I felt it too...

yeah, the guy on the news this morning was saying "if we actually have one during this drill, we'll either look like total geniuses or complete idiots"

Snowflake 11-13-2008 01:05 PM

Visible DP mojo.

I confess, I knew about the simulation, but when I read the thread title, I thought "Oh man! NPR has failed me!"

Not Afraid 11-13-2008 01:10 PM

OH! So that's why my closet collapsed.

Morrigoon 11-13-2008 01:14 PM

ALex and I were watching tv when the Emergency Alert thingy happened. They were saying to please drill if you were watching it, by taking cover, etc. We looked around our living room and were like, well, we're fvcked. Hehe. Of course, we're also a single door away from the outside here, and that's our nearest doorway, so I guess we'd have run outside.

Not Afraid 11-13-2008 01:32 PM

I hope not to be in my closet when the big one hits.

You're not: we already know you are a lesbian by the way you dressed at last year's Camp Swank.

THREE

And cross-dressers are usually not gay.

Not that I am a cross-dresser. All three of those times (the only times I have dressed as such) were for absurdity.

Whereas you were dressed in actual lesbian regalia!

Now we know what your pet name for Chris is...

...besides, sex in the closet is bad. Ask George Michael.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 11-13-2008 02:48 PM

Damn, slept thru another one...

JWBear 11-13-2008 03:02 PM

According to the scenario Palm Springs is in ruins.

I thought for him it was public restrooms?

blueerica 11-13-2008 04:13 PM

So... I went on in cruelness and emailed the title to J. Without opening his email and clicking the link, he reports the news to his co-worker, whose son and boyfriend both live in So Cal.

Ummm... Yeah, I got a call from an unhappy J.

<-- so mean!

RStar 11-13-2008 06:35 PM

No worries.

It was just that big bean burrito I had for lunch.

Nothing to worry about!

Everyone can go about their regular business.....

Sorry....

You know, George Michael is a Greek Cypriot - he's rather dark and hairy, or so a man in London told me. Also a Greek Cypriot - fond of older hairy men.

Sure, it was just a drill last time next time you might not be so lucky. Disaster might be closer than you think and you can blame the Salton sea.

I hate it when people drudge up these old threads and I read it thinking it's new......

Moonliner 03-25-2009 10:11 AM

I love digging up old threads so that people reading them think they are new.

JWBear 03-25-2009 10:12 AM

Well, we did have an earthquake at 9:51 this morning...

2.3? That's not an earthquake. That's a friendly hello.

Morrigoon 03-25-2009 05:41 PM

That's about the equivalent of a geological fart.

If we had a 7.8 you'd know.

But that reminds me, I need to redo my emergency kit.

We should all use this as a good reminder to make sure emergency supplies are readily available for your family and your pets.

One of my neighbors is a emergency preparedness fanatic. They have the generator (plus propane to run it), food stores - MRE's, blankets, etc.

Too bad I have the one thing they deemed not necessary. A gun.

madmonkeygirl 03-25-2009 06:44 PM

It's called Karma will come back to bite you. lol just kidding....

Morrigoon 03-30-2009 04:51 PM

So on the news today they were discussing the quake clusters that have been happening in the IE.

They reported there was "between a 1-in-100 and a 1-in-20 chance" of a major quake in the next few days.

Never seen them give numbers even that specific before, but it's still a very low probability.

Moonliner 03-30-2009 06:24 PM

To keep you guys busy until the big one hits, here is a webcam of a LIVE volcano that's looking pretty cool today...

Mt. Redoubt in Alaska.

cirquelover 03-31-2009 11:01 AM

This is not the news I wanted to hear just before I come down there! I remember there being at least two earthquakes when we there 4-5 years ago. I didn't really enjoy them!

What is the IE?

Ghoulish Delight 03-31-2009 11:01 AM

"Inland Empire" - Riverside and San Bernardino.

wendybeth 03-31-2009 11:26 AM

It's a bit confusing when we're down there and hear that term used. (Usually during the weather report). We're the heart of the Inland Empire up here as well.

Also known as that place east of LA that smells bad that you have to pass through to get to Vegas.

Morrigoon 03-31-2009 01:46 PM

Parts of which are sometimes referred to as "The 909"

Which is no longer an accurate moniker as half of the IE is now the 951 area code.

Prudence 03-31-2009 03:56 PM

Here in the federal government, the less accurate a moniker is, the better we like it!
