Public Transportation to the Rose Bowl?
So here's the skinny: I'll be at the NYE party in Long Beach, next morning, I need to make my way up to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
I have a couple options: I can drive up, meet up with my dad somewhere in downtown Burbank, park my car, and ride in with him. (I'm thinking of trying to talk him into the LA Zoo parking lot as a good meeting spot, since Burbank sounds like added difficulty/expense) or, I can figure out how to leave my car in Long Beach, take the rail lines up (blue line to gold line, presumably) to either a)the Rose Bowl itself, or b) meeting up with my dad somewhere where he can easily pick me up to make it to the Bowl. Advice? |
I will eat your bacon

I'm sure there will be pm bacon to consume.
Anyway, I know what hour NA gets up and starts cooking... |
I know the Metro Gold Line is advertising heavily about their Rose Parade and Rose Bowl coverage.
Why drive? Get to the game on Metro Rail. Quote:

All Metro buses/rail lines will run according to Sunday/Holiday schedules on January 1.
|
Which means what? (bearing in mind I've never used public transportation in this city)

Drive to Union Station and take the Gold Line from there. The subways are easy to use.

Don't know how well it works, but you might try transit.google.com.
I know "Long Beach to Pasadena" didn't return anything but I don't know the addresses or proxies involved to try and see if results are doable. (And I'm sure all the info is at metro.net as GD says) |
Unfortunately Los Angeles MTA (aka Metro) is not currently participating with transit.google. Metrolink (longer distance commuter trains) is, but the trip 'goon is looking it involves Metro only, so google is no help.

HERE: http://www.metro.net/news_info/press/Metro_210v.htm
Blue Line 7th and Metro, Red line to Union Station, Gold Line Rose Bowl. Plenty of parking at the Wilow Street Station which is about 1/2 mile from our house. |
Ah, didn't realize they required the participation of the transit agencies. I assumed they were just mining the data. So much for my goal of planning a cross country trip using public transit.
|
Thanks for all the help guys.
At this point, I'm either going to do the blue line/gold line/shuttle thing, or meet my dad in the LA Zoo parking lot and carpool in. |

Don't forget to make sure the return trip is doable at a time you'd be comfortable with.

I know, but I didn't have a good experience on the Blue line and the hybrid thing is generally how I function when using public transit. I use public transit for as much of the trip as I can, but I still generally wind up driving at least to a Metro stop.

I say Morro should just walk there.
|
Of course she'd have to start now. And miss the party.
|
Well, its only 31.4 miles. With an average walking speed of 2.7 MPH, giving for a 5 minute break every hour, it would take a little over 12-1/2 hours. Since the game starts at 2:10 p.m. PST and allowing for an hour before-hand to get in the stadium, buy nachos and beer and enjoy the pre-game festivities, she could stay with us through the stroke of midnight.
But alas, she will miss the 1:00 dropping of the pants. |
Actually, after some research and discussion, I decided to play it safe. I'm driving to the Zoo and carpooling in from there with my dad.
Had a lot of good reasons to go this route. Looks like Metro is forbidding bulky items like chairs and coolers due to expected crowds. Since we'll be arriving so early, we plan (at least my brother and I, if not my dad who seems all too fond of the idea of walking around for 4 hours) on tailgating at my brother's car, so I need a folding chair. And also, I'm bringing my brother's family's Christmas gifts to him. Plus, after the game, we'll be going out to dinner somewhere, and I didn't wanna run the risk of issues getting back to Long Beach. So in the end, using the Zoo parking lot (wide open and free, often used for park n ride to the Hollywood Bowl) seemed the best option. |
