Rodent Update

Well.... Princess Peach is not pregnant. She is happily living in the larger cage with Sniff. Sniff's seizures have been less frequent.

Daisy is still in the smaller cage, she gets to visit the others when they get time with us.

They are all thriving and seem to be adjusting well. They are also swarming all over my keyboard right now.

Now for the shocker, either Daisy has a severe glandular problem or she is the pregnant one. This is probably why she prefers the smaller cage.

Oh, not rats...mice. They're cool too. I had one that was sooo sweet and mellow. I got him a friend mouse and he beat him up and my mouse- well, he didn't make it. Guilt and horror!

I'm glad your mousies are happy.

Mousey Girl 03-30-2005 06:30 PM

Nephy, I have 3 female rats. In order of age: Sniff, Princess Peach and Daisy.

Just that Mousey Girl sounds a bit better that Ratty Girl.

Ghoulish Delight 03-30-2005 06:59 PM

Oops, I stand corrected.

Well...we now have a nest in the back corner of the cage... Yesterday she stopped sleeping in her "house". During the night she pulled all of her bedding out of it began to form it into a nest. We may have babies as early as Sunday (if not sooner). She is getting huge and can no longer run, she just sort of waddles. Last night I was watching her sleep, poor thing had to sleep on her side, but her back feet were straight up in the air. I gave her some extra bedding this morning (shredded paper towels and kleenex) and pulled the house out to give her more room. I just wonder if she understands what is happening.

WE HAVE BABIES!!!!

I got hom from work to a tiny sqeaking from the cage... She got off the nest to allow me to count (and so she could go potty) and I counted 10. We just got home from Chuy's and she wanted to come out and be held, there are 11 (she was licking me while I did the recount). I took her out for a bit to be held and petted and then I placed her back in the cage... She is now nursing and cleaning her babies. Considering how small she looks, the babies are pretty good sized. I love the sounds coming from the cage. Nickolas is in total awe. He was with me when we found out she had them. He is being good and trying not to bug her, but she wanted him so I finally got him to realize it was ok for him to hold her. I called David (he is at Lake Isabella for a fishing derby) he was still trying to say she was just fat. I told him we had babies.

Mommy and babies all seem to be doing well.

CONGRATULATIONS! I was thinking it would be happening soon. 11? Is that a lot?

wendybeth 04-01-2005 09:58 PM

YEAH!!! Babies everywhere!!! It is definatly Spring!! WB gets the sound of little baby birdy chrips and I get squeakies.

11 is about average, I once had a rat who had 13. My mom's always had 12. Looking at them this morning I can already spot the runt, who may not survive. She is cleaning them right now after allowing me to put her nest back together and recover the scattered babies. I just can't get over how small she is without that bag-o-jellybeans in her tummy.

Mousey Girl 04-02-2005 06:47 AM

Oh, and Eliza, my arm is ok. It was my fault Sniff fell off, I was not doing my job. She is the most ungraceful rat in history. She gets on the windowsill and runs back and forth between the blinds and window. When she is ready to go back to the computer desk, instead of jumping the 3 inches down she starts running on the livingroom side of the blinds. She waits for me to move my shoulder to her so she can climb down on me. When I don't move fast enough or don't realize she is there she will walk back & forth until she falls off.

I am obsessed... The babies have sprouted wiskers. They are showing their future colors, 4 black, 2 b&w hooded, 1 beige hooded, 3 light colored... 2 of the black ones look like they have a skin condition, but Boy informed me they are getting their hair. Their ears are formed, but still pinned to their heads. They are responding to us and Daisy doesn't care if we touch them. She is a good mama. It will be hard to get rid of them. We are keeping 2 and 2 are going to a friend, from there I just don't know yet.
