You wouldn't eat a Sea Kitten, would you?

I've got to give PETA points for creativity on this one.

Ghoulish Delight 01-13-2009 04:40 PM

Won't work. Americans generally support special treatment of monkeys, and yet have no qualms with torturing, starving, and otherwise perpetrating systematic holocaust against sea monkeys.

Moonliner 01-13-2009 04:47 PM

I have to agree with GD. It won't work and past that I think it does harm to their oveall cause by making them look like morons.

Sauteed or barbecued?

BarTopDancer 01-13-2009 04:55 PM

Is this a BTD should not view link?

It's just a story: no pix

I think it's BTD safe :)

Its PETA: I am no longer surprised to the levels to which they are willing to stoop.

Capt Jack 01-13-2009 05:00 PM

I have to say, I think JWBear's sig line says all there is to say.

Six months from now, somebody will be reading this thread and JWBear's sig will read "Will work for hot cowboys" and be thoroughly confused...

Gemini Cricket 01-13-2009 05:50 PM

I'd eat a Sea Kitten. With tartar sauce or catsup.
:D

flippyshark 01-13-2009 06:00 PM

Seeing as I already enjoy catfish, I imagine the kittenfish would be perfectly yummy.

Motorboat Cruiser 01-13-2009 06:23 PM

I think a sea kitten hand roll sounds delightful - and healthy too!.

Alex 01-13-2009 06:47 PM

I'd eat (at least try) a regular kitten if it weren't raised as a pet so, sure, I'd try a sea kitten.

Not if I change it to "Kevy Baby is a doo-doo head"!

Where?

Gemini Cricket 01-13-2009 07:29 PM

If I had to, I'd eat a PETA member.
Maybe one of the bigger ones.
Not one of those emaciated ones.
You know, if I had to survive.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-13-2009 07:59 PM

They're right, you know. A life is a life is a life, whether it's cute and furry or not. Which is why my policy is akin to Alex's.

I'd eat a cat or a dog if it were raised to be eaten. I eat adorable cows and lambs all the time. I have eaten rabbit and totally would again. Top of the food chain, baby.

Ask any kitten you happen to see
What's the best kitten?
Kitten of the sea.

I completely disagree.

They don't seriously think people will call fish "sea kittens", they just want people to talk about the campaign and the idea of fish as sentient creatures.

The idea is working beautifully. We're talking about it aren't we?

I had fish for dinner last night.

Yeah... But we're also making fun of them. Not the discussion I think they wanted.

Err, okay, I feel the need to point out that I was not serious about "sea monkeys" being a way to stop people from killing brine shrimp. It was a joke.

Snowflake 01-14-2009 09:39 AM

Kitten shrimp are very yummy with lots of garlic and chili flakes

BarTopDancer 01-14-2009 09:55 AM

This is how I ended up vegetarian for awhile. I realized exactly what I was eating.

I think fishing is horrible and would probably agree with the article (but I'm not going to read it). that dragging something around by its mouth and then letting it suffocate is cruel. But I eat fish. And I eat meat. I just try to not think about it.

I disagree. All press is good press to some degree. We may ridicule it, we may tell other people how ridiculous it is...they tell a few people. Somewhere along the line, PETA is guessing (probably rightly so) that someone (who may not otherwise be simpatico w/PETA) is going to go, "hmmm, I never thought about it that way."

Further, in my estimation, this is a campaign largely aimed at kids. Kids drive A LOT of change insofar as treatment of animals is concerned. I point you to the highly successful campaign to stop the slaughter of dolphins in tuna nets. The architects of that campaign didn't confront adults, they instituted an educational campaign aimed at kids, mostly through schools, which more or less sent a message saying that when you ate tuna, you were killing dolphins. In fairly shot order, tuna sales plummeted and angry mothers were writing letters to Starkist and their congressmen. "Dolphin-safe" tuna and DPCIA quickly followed.

Yeah, got that. Just pointing out that the campaign itself is successful, based on my preceding comment.

tracilicious 01-14-2009 10:39 AM

I like my sea kittens raw, with pickled ginger and wasabi and soy sauce.

Actually, sea kittens are the one creature I do eat. Not because I think their lives are less valuable, but because that's as close to vegetarian as I'm willing to get. I really love sushi.

Deebs 01-14-2009 10:53 AM

I can not haz sea kittehs. I iz allergic.

As a nonmammaltarian, I concur (though I also eat poultry). A strict vegetarian diet sounds boring to me.

Kitten of the sea.

This made me laugh right out loud.

Also, I can haz ahiburger?

Similar to Marla, I think there are times when I absolutely do need meat. (This week for instance - I lost a lot of blood and immediately crave it, and thusly ate some.) But I don't like thinking about it, so I prefer other sources of protein when it makes me feel good enough. (Including, yes, a chicken's menstrual cycle.)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-14-2009 10:56 PM

I hate fish, so no eating Sea Kitten. Sex Kitten? Well...

lashbear 01-15-2009 02:18 AM

Bornieo: you do know that Ariel is a Kitten Of The Sea, don't you ??

Capt Jack 01-15-2009 10:50 AM

Hehehehe. I'm partial to Field Potatoes.

Ghoulish Delight 01-17-2009 11:04 AM

Does this mean that if you feed your cat tuna, they're canibals?
