hair-

Help-

I have been dying it red (various shades) for months-I hate it now- I mean- I love the colors and its been fun but I am driving myself nuts maintaining it-

I'm over it.

I saw a product called hair color remover-that gets rid of the color and preps it for a new color.

Would that work on me? If I then went back to strawberry blonde?

I am seriously ready to go SUPER short pixie and just bleach it.

HELP- my sanity is leaking out my hair.

katiesue 02-09-2009 02:15 PM

I would find a really good colorist and go there. You can then maintin it yourself but they're good at telling you how damaged your hair is now, what a new process will do to it, how the color might take etc. It will cost more than doing it yourself but may save you from frying your hair in the long run.

been there done that-they did a horror brown job on me

I am using products that make my hair feel and behave pretty fabulous-but I have to change this-

They also refuse to get me back to any kind of blonde-

Kevy Baby 02-09-2009 02:36 PM

I can tell you that Susan (who used to dye her hair red as well) decided to go back to natural (blond). After conferring with several people, she elected to just go with the "let it grow out" method. It didn't take long to get back to her own color (she didn't cut it all off: she just let the color fade away).

However, I would wait for the LoT resident expert, Wendybeth.

I might do that too-

I seriously am considering cutting it wayyy short-and then letting it go. The longer it is the more I am tempted to keep coloring it.

Did I hear 'hair'?:D

Depending on the amount of dye in your hair, Neph, the decolorizer might work, but that's a big might. Red is notorious for fading, yet a big ol' PITA when you want it gone. A rule of thumb in color is 'dye does not remove dye', i.e. any lighter-toned haircolor will not remove the color underneath if it is synthetic. You can use color to tone down or deepen, but not remove. (Ash is the tone to cancel red). Most stylists will try decolor, then condition, dry and apply a creme bleach to lift out the remaining color. You almost always have to tone it with a blonde series to give it a natural look after all this, and sometimes the porosity of the hair makes it difficult for the toner to take and remain.

In short- it's a big process to go through, but it can be done. I recommend home stuff all the time to people who don't want to go to a salon, but this is one instance where you really need the expertise of a good colorist. I suspect this is why Susan chose to bite the bullet and grow it out- it's a process that sometimes takes several appointments, and can be very expensive.

I hope this helps- feel free to ask any questions you may have, and gl!

So chopping it off-and letting it grow out-and then chopping off the red ends is the easiest and best way to go.

Check :)

For me at least, those are the three that come to mind when you mention starting over. Not a bad group.

Capt Jack 02-09-2009 03:37 PM

as fast as most hair grows, the above would be short lived in any case Im sure.

Ive always thought it looked kinda hot on women anyway....but then, Im a bit of a freak

Nephythys 02-09-2009 04:03 PM

heh-not that short LOL

Kevy Baby 02-09-2009 04:16 PM

Maybe I am in the minority, but I personally vote for leaving the hair long and letting the color work its way out. Susan ended up with some unique split-coloring while the dye faded away/grew out. I kinda liked that as well!

And I like long hair.

BarTopDancer 02-09-2009 04:17 PM

When I went from maroon back to my normal strawberry blond I had to have 2 bleaching jobs done and then let it grow. Looking back I should have let it grow out.

lashbear 02-09-2009 05:03 PM

Here's the answer you need...

If you already have longish roots, trim it short but leave red tips. Then you can be "edgy" for a few weeks.

Disneyphile 02-09-2009 06:15 PM

I also vote for letting it grow out while trimming out the old color. That's what I had to do to finally get rid of my old perm days.

However, all this talk of hair is urging me to do something I've been "dying" to do for awhile - die my hair black, except for a bright blue streak near the front. Don't know why, but I've always wanted to do that.

I've been wanting to do something to my hair for quite a while - it's been maybe a year since my last cut - except for a few self trim jobs on my bangs.

But what to do?

I can't decide so I do nothing.

It's pretty long now - so long that I can hardly stand to wear it down. 4 out of 5 work days it's up in a clip for sure.

But what to do with it? I've always wanted to try out black hair - but I did a dark brown job that was pretty dark and that made me reconsider.

I need a nice versitile cut that's easy to work with and looks good on me - the fat gal.

Chop and donate?

I'm finally happy with my hair color (natural) and I think my mom would throttle me (yes, at my age) if I started coloring it again. I did find a new style (very similar to my current style) that I want to try. My hair guy charges a small fortune for a cut though, so I need to save up. A different hair person isn't an option; I'm sure most of the women here can understand ;)

Mine has a big dent in the back.

Morrigoon 02-10-2009 09:54 AM

You know, Nephy, another thing you could do is continually dye your hair lighter and lighter shades, so you can sort of gently fade out to the blonde, so the line of demarcation is less obvious.

Not long enough for that. I should have specified - it's long for me. Past my shoulders. But no - I'm too vain too just go *that* short. Besides, my hair is pretty thin now days - too short and I might be pretty scalpy.

Kevy Baby 02-10-2009 10:54 AM

For some reason, whenever I see this thread, I feel compelled to break into song from an American Tribal Love-Rock Musical.

Not Afraid 02-10-2009 10:59 AM

I'd love to have short hair for a bit al la Agyness Deyn, but I would look HORRIBLE with that hair cut.

I'm getting mine cut today. Don't know what I'm doing yet - probably a version of the same. I don't have the face to pull off too many styles.

As for color, I have been thinking of going back to what was my natural color (which is sort of a red/brown/blond/amber color). It would still require lots of upkeep though. Too much grey.

JWBear 02-10-2009 11:24 AM

"If I kept my hair natural like yours, I'd be bald!"
