I figure if we can have lolcats and YouTube threads, why not have a Fail thread.
Here's one to start the ball rolling. Check out this guy's name. |

Okay, not technically a Fail, but it is a Microsoft inanity.
In typing an email (in Outlook using Word as my editor), I typed the sentence, "Attached are the [item 1], [item 2], and [item 3] for the..." Since I leave the spelling and grammar check mode on, it put a green squiggly line under "are" (the second word in the sentence). The suggested fix was to change "are" to "is." I accepted the change. Now the word "is" had a green squiggly line under it. The suggested fix? "are" |
"Are" is correct.

There is a lot of online chat about the proposal being staged, with the intent that the footage will go viral and provide the team or broadcasters with some free publicity. It could be.
|
Some of my friends who wear rubber heads for a living have presided over proposals in the parks that ended up with a refusal. D'oh! That would suck. (And if it happens, Mickey still has a great big happy smile plastered on his face.)
|
It was staged apparently, but I still like to think that is what she is saying.
I root for that outcome every time I see one of these at a real public event. |
A public marriage proposal falls under the same rule as dealing with kids: Never ask a question if you don't already know the answer.

I recall seeing a refusal in a football stadium that looked real. The girl said no and quickly ran up the aisle to the exit.

In the comments section below the "Child Safety Fail" posted by Szerbiac, I found this gem:
"I did some work for Disney, in the offices at the fabled Disneyland (behind the scenes, so to speak). I think the company motto is “The beatings shall continue until moral improves.” Ah, Disneyland. 1 security guy for every 5 tourists. And DisneyWorld! My sister goes there a lot. They have 4 kids and one time she was there a security type told her to keep a close eye on her kids because at any one time there would be 3 child abduction rings working the park. If your kid comes up missing they usher you into a room with like 50 security monitors so you can try to spot your kid being whisked away. I went to the Disney store in W. L.A. one time, and asked the girl behind the counter, “What’s it like working for the rat?” She looked around furtively and asked, “Which one?” True." Wow. Three child abduction rings working the park!? I'm astounded at how this manages to elude the Mainstream Media. |

Spoiler:

I didn't know where to post the following, so I'll call it a "knowledge fail."
Buzz Lightyear 'first man on moon' some believe Some people believe that Buzz Lightyear, the fictional cartoon character from the film "Toy Story," was the first man on the moon. In a survey, which reveals "deeply worrying" levels of ignorance about the Apollo space programme, which sent three men to the moon forty years ago this month, 11 out of 1009 people surveyed thought Buzz Lightyear was the first person to step onto the moon. A further 8 people thought it was Louis Armstrong, with less than three-quarters correctly answering that it was Neil Armstrong. The survey, undertaken on behalf of E&T magazine, published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, also revealed that over a quarter of all people do not believe the astronauts actually landed on the moon. You can read the entire article HERE. |
BWAHAHAHA!!!! FAIL!!!!

Quote:

I sincerely hope those people were joking. The sad part is that there are people who (while maybe this factoid isn't true) do believe some really wacked out things. Plus the actual ignorance that has been demonstrated is astounding and saddening.
I love reading about these, but it also makes me sad and horrified that there really are people out there who are that ignorant/unthinking/whatever. |

Teen Girl Falls in Open Manhole While Texting Quote:
|
I heard about this story, so I haven't clicked the link ... but I feel safe in saying it's ok to text and walk because you would only expect to fall into an open manhole cover if you were texting to Acme, Inc. in a Roadrunner cartoon.
|
Even while texting, one should watch where you're walking. I haven't seen full-sized manhole covers missing, but I have seen small lids missing so it's not entirely unexpected to see bigger ones gone.
|
Last week a teenager walked right off the curb into traffic, right in front of my car, while texting. She actually flipped me the bird and started yelling at me. Umm, my light was green honey. Maybe I should have just hit her huh?! ;)

Haha, I didn't see that coming (sorta like dip and her manhole, right?)
Yes, I'd expect it to be marked. However, marking it is a stop-gap measure to increase visibility. Essential on obstacles which are less visible (soap spill on a tile floor, for example), and helpful on obvious but more dangerous obstacles such as an open hole in the ground. And it still requires the person to notice it. Had it been coned and she walked into it anyway, you'd be hearing her angry it wasn't taped off. Yet, surprisingly, the human race managed to survive prior to the invention of the orange cone. |
I bet we were smarter as a species before we invented the orange traffic cone.

Christmas Decoration Fail
A zealous Christmas decorator caused a storm of trouble with his decorations after police and passersby thought a dummy that was left clinging to his roof with a ladder on the ground below, was a real man struggling for help. Spoiler:
Source I thought it was funny |
|
Yeah, it's funny until somebody hangs themselves outdoors around Halloween and the body is ignored for a few days while everybody assumes it is a decoration.
(Well, ok, that is still funny, but not the kind you laugh about on the evening news.) |
The word "TREK" looks photoshopped.
...and I think the dummy display is hilarious. Are people dumb enough not to realise that it's not moving, kicking or screaming for help ? "Oh, maybe he passed out and he's locked there by the amazing power of his finger-muscles". |

I don't think so: Tiger was much older than that when ToT opened.
Oh... you weren't talking about the guy in the red shirt in the front row? No, I don't think it is real because you aren't dropping when the picture is taken: you are (relatively) still (maybe some shaking, but nothing that would cause what is in the picture. Also, someone would have had to seriously plan a serious visual hoodwink of the load operator on the ride (having a fake seatbelt with yellow strap that the rider would "tug" on). Not that it couldn't be done - it would just require prior planning. |
It's been a long time but isn't the ride photo for ToT before the first drop? Easy enough to avoid the seatbelt if the CM isn't paying attention but if the photo is real and my memory of where the photo is taken is correct then he must be hanging from something above.

Also, if this did happen, wouldn't it have been all over MC or the news back in September (when this supposedly occurred)? Clearly there would be questions about the safety of ToT. If this did happen, I can't see any sane DCA exec not closing the ride down until they could investigate what happened.

They may be. We have an 888 number that if you dial 800 instead, you get to hear naughty things.

On that one I envision it originally saying "Psychological needs" and someone later thinking that sounded to clinical and changing it without paying attention.
Doing content reviews right now for a couple projects and I'm freshly reminded at how many people think you can just go through changing individual words without ever looking at the entirety again. |
I guess the person who changed #3 from "Pee" to "Personal Needs" just got lucky.
|
You could just cross out 1 to 4 and replace with "Because blood in your P is a bad thing."

Susan and I are huge fans of signs with missing/burnt out letters. Over the holidays, we captured (using a camera phone while driving past at 55 MPH - she took the pic while I was driving) a Self Storage place off the Hollywood Freeway. The caption was "So that's where Santa keeps them for the rest of the year!"

Rather tame, but it amused me none-the-less.
For those who haven't heard the news, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down this morning. I heard it on KNX 1070 (local news radio station) on my way into work at around 8:30 ish. Later, on the same station, they played an obviously taped report from Charles Osgood at around 8:50ish talking about "since Mobarack didn't step down, what will today be like in Egypt?" Somebody at the station needs to be listening what is going out on the airwaves! |
I almost hate to post this as the poor girl just couldn't get the words out.
CBS Reporter Serene Branson Gets Tongue Tied After Grammys ETA: Rumors are out that she may have suffered a stroke on air. |
Not nearly as much of a fail if she had a stroke, but that could certainly explain it.

Social worker fail
Got a call from the nursing home social worker: SW: I'm following up your call last week about long-term care for your mother. I know she went back to the hospital before coming back to us but she doesn't seem to be here right now, did she go back to the Hospital? Me: No, she passed away in your facility last week SW: oh, I'm sorry to [lengthy appogy]. So we have some of your mother s things, there's a tennis shoe but I can't find the mate. Me: that's because her leg was amputated. |
I bet she was mortified.
|
|
Oh Euro, I'm so sorry you have to deal with crap like that at such a time. Makes you wonder why they're given the power to decide things so important when they obviously don't look at the files.

Today at Disneyland:
Space Mountain!!! YAY!!!! Oh, it just broke down. Matterhorn!!!! YAY!!!! Oh, it just broke down too. Big Thunder!!! YAY!!!! Only 20 minutes!!!! Row 10!!! Train is pulling into the station for us to board!!!! What the hell you mean it just broke down? All the mountains, within an hour. Absolutely bewildering. |

In response to your "Fiberglass/Drywall; what's the difference?"
Drywall screws are frequently used in woodworking projects - with their smaller and non-tapered shafts (than wood screws), it helps prevent splitting the wood (especially if you pre-drill the hole). But funny picture |
Okay. But it seems like now you need some explanation on the difference between fiberglass and wood.
And the difference between humor and serious inquiry. |

I love how the article says no evidence that yellow ink was released when it's visible in the picture
|
The quote probably meant released into the storm drains but I also wonder how many look at that and wonder why the story doesn't mention the green ink.
|
that's all kinds of awesome
|
Blue and yellow make green.
|
Upon seeing the picture on another computer, I am curious about what might have been done to the colors of the image (the color is a little wack on my monitor here at the office). I would be highly unusual if ink colors other than cyan, magenta, yellow and black would be provided in such large totes, but the "blue" and "red" shown do not look even close to cyan (which is a much paler blue) or magenta (which is a pinker/bluer red).

Government employees have been invited to submit ideas for reducing government spending. Only government employees can submit through this system. To enforce this restriction, one must register by using a government email address on an outside system. Upon registering, the system sends you a confirmation email, which you must use to validate your account, which you must do before one you are allowed to submit ideas.
Sadly, these confirmation emails cannot get through our firewall. There is no solution anticipated. Fail. |
Maybe this was by design ;)
|
I blame the Republicans for that. ;)

Corporate sent out a post hurricane email, that states in it a reminder how to log into remote email. Um you'd have to be logged in to get the email in the first place right?
|
Possible less than stupid reason.
Here, whenever something happens that causes a sudden uptick in remote access, our local support guy gets slammed by people who don't remember how to do it. Too late to help them that time, but he still sends it all out to everybody again to hopefully prevent it the next time. |

As you might have heard, the National Cathedral here in DC was damaged in the recent earthquake.
They started repairs recently, yesterday we had some strong winds from a passing thunderstorm and well.... Scratch one Cathedral gift shop. ![]() The business end of this 600 Ton crane took it out. |
Oops

To add injury to insult, yesterday two people were injured at the National Cathedral site trying to clean up the fallen crane. No word yet on how serious the injures are.

Reminds me of a bit of history from the 1906 SF earthquake. One of the few downtown buildings that managed not to burn was a liquor warehouse. Its survival inspired some wag to pen this little ditty: "If, as they say, God spanked this town For being much too frisky, Why did He burn His churches down And save Hotaling's Whiskey?" |

I'm curious to. I'm not finding any record of congress making any such designation (though record of politicians informally referring to it that way). Also not finding any reference at the cathedrals web site or the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation's (the organization originally chartered by Congress in 1893 to build one) to technical non-denominationalism. In fact it all seems to be very overt in its Episcopalianism and Christianiaty.
ETA: Here's the full text of the original congressional charter. |

Now if only PETA could work in an app for the site where clicking a button will start a small fire. |
