Backup Drive

I need to get a backup drive. Any suggestions? My needs are pretty minimal, mostly photos.

BarTopDancer 02-15-2009 10:34 AM

I bought my back up drive from buy.com - very happy with their service and they are just off the 73.

Here is the link to their externals. I'm fond of the 2.5 inch, as they are easier to carry around. I have the 120 gig version of this (and paid the same price a few years ago). The 160 gig is $3 cheaper.

Whatever you decide to go with, make sure you don't need an external power source (most are powered off the USB cable these days).

Well, the Freeagent Go I recently got is wonderful. Portable, a variety of capacity sizes to choose from.

Thanks - I've got everything backed up on CD as well but a drive is just easier to deal with.

Our local electronic store (Dick Smith) just advertised a 1 Terabyte External Hard Disc for $170. I'm tempted...

Fry's has the Western Digital 1TB My Book for $99.99

If the drive really is just for backups, you might want to consider an online backup solution like idrive.com

An off site backup is great VS fire, theft and locust plagues.

As long as one avoids the white label of death and don't expect a lick of anything resembling customer service, you're okay.

Chernabog 02-15-2009 02:21 PM

I haven't experienced the white label of death, what is that so I know to avoid it?

Shopping at Fry's is really one of those experiences where you need to know exactly what to get, don't expect any help finding it, don't expect them to honor the warranty (so don't purchase one), don't ask any employees for help because they don't want to help you (and will often point you to the wrong item) and expect a 50% chance you can't return it for a reason that they don't tell you upon purchase (which applies even if the employee pointed you to the wrong item).

The deal above is online-only though. I would still expect problems.

Or you can save yourself the time, headache and hassles and shop elsewhere.

When someone returns an item and Fry's puts it back on the shelves, they put a white label on it stating that it was a return. The problem is, Fry's will often times put back items that were returned because they were defective. Also, often times the item is missing parts.

Basically, don't purchase anything from Fry's that has the "White Label of Death."

Staples had the same one for the same price - so I got it there. Most of my photos get uploaded to costco or Kodak so I'm ok in case of a castrophe. Maddie is using my old laptop and there are a ton of photos etc on there as I was doing her school yearbook when I was using it. I want to clean it off so she can just use it for her stuff. Plus I need to back up my Mom's old computer incase I need any files off there - so this seemed like a good solution.

I just checked today's paper and this is in-store as well.

I've purchased many items from Fry's and never had any problems (as long as I know what I want going in and I stay away from the White Label of Death). And I typically save money doing so.

However, if you want, you can get a Seagate 1 TB external for $110 from New Egg.

I find Fry's the exact opposite of headache and hassles. No one bugging me trying to help, actual selection for most things I'm looking for, and no b.s. when it comes to trying to push over-priced accessories (read $100 HDMI cables).

All that AND I can get gummy peach rings in the checkout line.

BarTopDancer 02-15-2009 04:04 PM

I just tend to shop for electronics on the internet. No one thinking I'm a dumb girl, no one hassling me and usually free shipping.

Though I don't get the gummy peach rings.

I worked at Fry's a lifetime ago. It wasn't pleasant on the other side of the counter either.

lashbear 02-15-2009 04:07 PM

That's what I like about you, GD - you're an Optimist (even in the face of fans) ! :snap:

...and Gummy Peach Rings.. Yum !
