Disney books? No thanks.

Headliner has been invited to a Bar Mitzvah. The invitation requests that she bring "gently used kids books" to be sent to school kids in Israel who are learning english. A note on the invite adds "No Disney Books".

I know the rumors of Walt's history but still, this just seems petty. What other companies are they boycotting because sometime in the last 50 years a company exec might have had unfavorable views?

Alex 03-23-2009 02:05 PM

Are you sure that is the reason as opposed to such charities getting to many of the cheap mass and poorly-produced Disney books that are out there?

Kind of like how when I was a kid the local Goodwill wouldn't take Robert Ludlum books. Not because they had anything against Robert Ludlum, they just knew they couldn't offload them in the volume they received them.

But yeah, if that is the reason then it is stupid.

Ghoulish Delight 03-23-2009 02:13 PM

Or it could simply be that they (or the people they tend to distribute to) object to the particular themes in Disney books, rather than anything Walt might or might not have done.

Moonliner 03-23-2009 02:57 PM

What I do know is that the kid in question is the same one that implied Headliner was antisemetic when she wore the mousekteer outfit.

Morrigoon 03-23-2009 03:00 PM

Hmm... does Headliner really need to attend the Bat Mitzvah of such a girl?

Showing some restraint nowadays? What's up with that? :D :p

lashbear 03-23-2009 03:22 PM

Maybe the Children's Book version of "The Producers" would be nicely appropriate instead of a Disney Book.

I like Lashbear's suggestion, except in pop-up book form.

I don't think you need to make a big deal out of it by not going or bringing something to annoy them. If the kid brings it up, I'd go ahead and defend Walt (as I'm sure Headliner would), but I'd just attend the party and bring another used book and let it go.

Go to their house in the middle of the night and burn a swastika wearing Mickey ears into their front lawn. Then mail them a letter saying "if you're going to be a paranoid pansy I'll give you something to be a paranoid pansy about."

This will provide a valuable life lesson to your daughter. Namely, how do deal with it when you're on the evening news for committing hate crimes.

RStar 03-23-2009 05:00 PM

How about sending a copy of "Heather Has Two Mommies"

http://www.goldengatebookstore.com/r...30&affnr=-2610

That should raise a brow or two.....

Strangler Lewis 03-24-2009 07:42 AM

Disney books are junk. Any excuse for not reading them is a good one.

As to your daughter's friend, it's no accident that Mickey Mouse came out shortly after "Mein Kampf," and that the character was originally a vicious rat known as Shmuel the Bolshevik. Politics aside, Disney realized that America did not have the same rich tradition of antisemitic caricature that Europe had. So Shmuel became a Negro parody, and Mickey Mouse was born.

Shouldn't this go in the Disney Rumors thread?;)

We have a rumor thread? I thought that was just hearsay.

Ghoulish Delight 03-24-2009 10:51 AM

Every Disney rumor thread ever created on the internet was actually created by Disney itself, just to keep people guessing.

RStar 03-25-2009 12:56 PM

So, have you asked them why no Disney books? I'm just wondering what the thoughts are.

Moonliner 03-25-2009 01:05 PM

No. I don't have any direct contact with the parents and I expect it would just lead down a bad road if I was to press the issue. So we'll donate some books, Headliner will dance with her crew and life will go on.

Of course I might suggest that she requests a few Disney songs from the DJ....

They have a great song about a cat.

Kevy Baby 03-25-2009 05:29 PM

Yeah, cat: let's go with that

Probably right not to take on someone that small-minded. You know what they say, "Never wrestle with a pig. You'll only get dirty and the pig likes it."

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2009 06:11 PM

Hmm, nice how everyone's quick to judge the parents with absolutely no hard info.

Morrigoon 03-25-2009 06:22 PM

Yup. It's a hobby. :P

(Sorry, but calling a little girl anti-Semitic just because she dressed up like a Mouseketeer rubs me the wrong way)

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2009 06:27 PM

That was the kid, not the parents, and definitely not the charity.

katiesue 03-25-2009 06:56 PM

Or you could bring books that aren't actually Disney books like "Mary Poppins", "Pollyana", "The Jungle Book", etc.

wolfy999 03-25-2009 09:13 PM

Which most Disney books aren't authored by Disney anyways

I'm not familiar with "Pollyana," but giving "Mary Poppins" and "The Jungle Book" would be a tad ironic.
