Speaking of Yosemite, Big Wheel Race anyone?

Every year in San Fransico on Easter for the past 7 or so years there has been an event called the BYOBW (Bring Your Own Big Wheel) Race, and this year is no different! The event is at 4pm on April 12- conveniently the day before the Yosemite adventure begins... Just sayin'...

Here's some links to pictures and videos:

Now, why don't they make Big Wheels that actually fit grownups (and can support their weight)? I would totally dig an XL Big Wheel.

Alex 03-24-2009 07:52 PM

Because then the off-road unicyclists wouldn't have pride in being the silliest of the wheeled transport users.

Edited to add:

Spoiler:

See, silly.

€uroMeinke 03-24-2009 07:52 PM

I think the event would be less fun if sized for Adults

innerSpaceman 03-24-2009 08:49 PM

of course, i can fit in a Disneyland kiddie stroller, so it may be a happy medium ... if i enter the race!

Disneyphile 03-25-2009 12:04 PM

OMG. I so want to race! :D

Moonliner 03-25-2009 12:07 PM

I've always thought it would be fun to build an adult sized playground.

Swings 30' tall, slides the same, etc....

Gabba Gabba we accept you, we accept you, one of us.

Seriously, I am seriously considering heading up there with SuPeR K! and entering the race .... if we can find two Big Wheels, and IF we can cram them in my tiny car, along with all the other stuff we're taking for Yosemite and Cambria.

Kevy Baby 03-25-2009 12:53 PM

What about towing them behind the car? Rent one of those car dollies and strap the front wheel of the Big Wheel into each tire bay on the car dolly. It would make for a great site rolling down the highway.

Sure, the Big Wheels would be destroyed within a mile of your departure, but imagine the looks you will get!

Oh man... I can only imagine! Even if we didn't enter the race, it would still be amazing to watch!

Big Wheels bring terrible memories of children riding them outside our bedroom window at 7 am when I am a) hungover and b) sleep deprived.

Capt Jack 03-25-2009 07:44 PM

BarTopDancer 03-25-2009 08:09 PM

Big Wheels bring to mind terrible memories of Fred Savage in The Boy Who Could Fly.

:argghh:

Not Afraid 03-25-2009 09:13 PM

You know, I could get into riding a big wheel (or 2) of we were doing it in Yosemite!

keith - SuPeR K! 03-25-2009 10:06 PM

Yosemite LoT BYOBW Race!!! Oh this could be interesting...

keith - SuPeR K! 03-25-2009 10:07 PM

Remember- the rules state there are no rubber wheels allowed! Just the crappy plastic ones that have no traction whatsoever :)

You need to check out some of the "adventure parks" in Europe.

Self operated zipline rides, boat jumps and all kinds of fun.

innerSpaceman 03-30-2009 10:34 AM

So K! Are we finding Big Wheels and entering, or just spectating?

Disneyphile 03-30-2009 01:12 PM

I'm totally game for Big Wheeling it through Yosemite! Could be even more interesting if we find an icy road. :D

keith - SuPeR K! 04-12-2009 03:26 PM

We've arrive at the raceway! (20th and Vermont) Lots of costumed racers are getting hyped up for the start of the race at 4pm. iSm and I have a great viewing spot on curve 3- perfect to see all the way down :) We'llkeep you posted!

keith - SuPeR K! 04-12-2009 04:47 PM

2 heats done, waiting for 3 to start! The costumes are hilarious. Many racers have lost parts to their vehicles. There are people riding trash cans, coolers, Barbie cars, Tonka trucks, an inflatable Shamu, etc. This is insanity!!!

MouseWife 04-12-2009 06:21 PM

Are either one of you taking photos?! It sounds like a wild time! :snap:

keith - SuPeR K! 04-12-2009 09:02 PM

We have photos of the first heat and a full video of the second heat. You can probably find more on http://boingboing.net later this week!

MouseWife 04-12-2009 09:47 PM

Cool! Thanks! Looking forward to seeing bits of everyones' adventures!

Ghoulish Delight 04-13-2009 09:25 AM

Here's a bit of video from msnbc. I didn't spot anyone I know, but maybe they'll be able to spot themselves.
