Disappearing Cookies

I have the oddest issue happening and I have no idea what happened and I can't fix it.

A few days ago all the websites I go to started logging themselves out whenever I close my browser (FireFox). I haven't changed any settings, there haven't been any updates to FF (that I recall) and I double checked, nothing is selected under the internet settings to say automatically log out.

It's getting annoying.

Any suggestions on what else to check?

Kevy Baby 03-25-2009 10:41 AM

I have not been stealing your Girl Scout Cookies

Not Afraid 03-25-2009 10:44 AM

I seriously thought this was going to be the place where I was forced to confess that I ate an entire packet of Thin Mints last night.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2009 10:49 AM

/rubs hands together.

Yes, my plan worked! ;)

*sigh* First off I'm sorry you have to deal with this type of response when you are just looking for a little help.

Have you checked the cookie settings under FireFox? There is an option to only save cookies for the current session. Check out this tutorial for more info.

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2009 11:05 AM

1) It could be that your cookies got corrupted. You may have to clear all your cookies and start again.

2) I also expected to open this thread and find, "All of my girl scout cookies are gone. How could this have happened?"

Eh, they don't bother me unless that is what the entire thread derails to ;)

My cookie setting has been and are still set to "keep until they expire".

The only thing I can think of that is different is that I recently removed Flock from my computer. Now that I think about it, I think it may have happened right after I removed it. I wonder if Flock removed a file that I needed.

GD - I already deleted all the cookies, also ran Ad Aware and AVG to make sure nothing fishy was installed.

And I still have some girl scout cookies left, and more coming over MA weekend!

You're only mad because you didn't get to say it first

blueerica 03-25-2009 01:53 PM

Damn it, I wanted GS cookie talk!

JWBear 03-25-2009 02:58 PM

Give it time.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2009 03:12 PM

Reinstalled FF, still no luck :(

DreadPirateRoberts 03-25-2009 03:25 PM

I'm sorry you lost your cookies.

Pirate Bill 03-25-2009 05:18 PM

Try renaming the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla

Name it something like Mozilla_backup. (Be sure to close Firefox and any other Mozilla product (like Thunderbird) that you may have open.) Then launch Firefox again. See if that helps.

My thinking is that there's a corrupt file in there that wasn't cleared out when you uninstalled/reinstalled. Firefox will recreate all the files in the Mozilla folder if it doesn't find one.

I did some research and it sounds like the cookie.txt file and cookies.sqlite were corrupted. I ended up doing a fresh install of FF. Not ideal, but it fixed the issue.

Thank you to those who offered actual help.

I'll now go enjoy my girl scout cookies. Neener.

Quiet! What know one sees you eat has no calories.

I am living proof this works.

BarTopDancer 05-14-2009 08:30 AM

AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

This is happening again. The only fix I can find still is the renmaing of the files, which isn't working. I really don't want to reinstall FF.

Pirate Bill 05-14-2009 09:48 AM

Have you tried my suggestion from post #13?

BarTopDancer 05-14-2009 10:01 AM

Yes, and it did exactly what reinstalling FF did. Deleted all my bookmarks and settings. I copied over my bookmarks folder and it didn't pick them up.

I was hoping to avoid losing everything again.

Ghoulish Delight 05-14-2009 10:04 AM

re: bookmarks, you can always go into Organize Bookmarks and click "Import and Backup" to re-import any bookmark folder you've made a copy of.

Morrigoon 05-14-2009 03:44 PM

I'm glad I'm not the only person who's been having this problem!

Snowflake 05-14-2009 06:24 PM

I dunno. I only use FF and I started using FF for the tabs and not because it was der uber browser.

wendybeth 05-14-2009 10:20 PM

It's happening on my comp as well. I am starting to really hate Firefox....might be time to switch.

BarTopDancer 05-14-2009 10:43 PM

Erica ate them!

bewitched 06-08-2009 02:34 AM

Just started happening on mine today. :(

Motorboat Cruiser 06-08-2009 06:18 AM

I just had to do a reinstall of Firefox because it was running incredibly slow. I think I narrowed it down to being a Realplayer plug in, but I am also in the "Firefox is frustrating me" camp.

Another thing that bugs me is that I used to be able to click a folder and choose "Open all in tabs" and it would close all of the existing tabs before opening the new batch. It worked really well, until they eliminated that feature with one of their upgrades. Now I have to manually close all of the previous tabs first before doing so. It's a PITA.
