Since I seem to REGULARLY run into animals that need homes, i thought I'd just put it all in one continuous thread.

Sparkle is an orange, fluffy GIRL (orange girls are unusual) who is 6 months old. She is going to be spayed on Sunday (if her upper respiratory infection is cleared up). She is a sweetie pie and loves to be petted. She is a bit shy but I think she will be Queen of her Domain when she finds her forever home. She's a beauty.


No Name



This little guy was found wandering down a street in a great neighborhood last night. He was prime Coyote food, but someone picked him up and a local resident took him in. He's an un-neutered male probably around 2 or 3 years old. He will be going to the SPCA (a kill shelter, but at least it is low kill) if he doesn't find home.

Is it possible to lock Susan out of this thread?

I would take Sparkle in a heartbeat if it wouldn't mean getting in trouble with our landlord. :(

As it is I have 2 dogs. PoohDog and Scruffy. Scruffy (as in Scruffy Looking Nerf Hearder) was wandering the streets near the local pound. He was so cute and swwet I didn't want to see him end up as food for one of the many packs of feral dogs, or as roadkill for the nearby freeway. PD tollerates him, but is jealous that Scruffy can come in and he can't.

It is also looking like we may end up with a 3rd dog. Diego is some sort of schnauzer/beagle/mutt. My only fear is food aggression. PD is too old to have to worry about someone biting him for eating. We are going to take him for a visit before trying him over night.

When the time finally comes for us to adopt a pair of dogs--it has been decided that they will be one welsh corgi and one beagle--we will most likely use Petfinder to find them. I don't know when that will be, though.

No Name is cute. Darn it that we already have 2 dogs cuz i'd take him in a minute lol...of course now that i told CM about this thread i doubt he'll come in here to even comment....lol

The good news is that No Name got adopted on a trial basis by a neighbor of the person who found him.

Sparkle still needs a home - she REALLY needs a home!

Looks like our neighbor desserted their dog.....so guess where he is now? Yep, the Wolfpack has now adopted a Miniature Pinscher. Wolfette has never been happier and it looks like Buddy (dog) is happy also!

NA, we'll be needing advice...are you familiar with the breed?

suffice to say, same attitude as the larger version, concentrated into a smaller package.

So far he is very intelligent, but stubborn as hell!

YAY!!!! I have a couple MinPins I walk. They are a handful!!!! But, I really like the breed. You have to be careful about their spindly legs and their eyes. They are also prone to Luxating Patella (as are all small dogs) which requires surgery. Thurston just had this surgery, so I know ll about it.

The MinPin is not a decendent of the Doberman Pincher but a Greyhound/Doxie cross. They WILL bolt so keep him on a leash. They are great little dogs if they are socialized properly. As with most small dogs, they have a bit of Napeleon complex. They live a pretty long time, so be prepared for a long term commitment.

Buddy just escaped from his leash on this morning's walk....ok made it a bit tighter. He met lots of friends and has a huge curiousity.

What exactly is Luxating Patella?

Already new he was no relation to a Doberman, you can be proud of me I've been doing some research on the internet.

Escape artist! Yep, they are slippery little things. Do you use a harness? If not, I would get a harness for him immediately. He shouldn't be walking with just a collar.

LP - basic info is that the groove under the kneecap is not deep enough so the knee cap slips and causes limping and pain. There are different grades of it and it usually gets worse over time.

We got our dog, Mellie, largely because of Mini-Pinschers. We were looking for a smallish dog, and all of our area shelters were out- only larger breeds were available. Reluctantly, I went to a pet shop to see if they might have a mutt mix that wasn't going to grow too huge. They only had a few dogs available- a litter of Mini-P's, and an 8 week old Aussie Shep-Akita. They'd put the Aussie/Akita into the same pen as the other pups, and she was just sitting there, looking utterly dejected. I'm sure she had a headache as well, as those Mini's were frikking loud!!!! Anyway, the poor thing looked just like a little bear cub, and even though she was only 8 weeks old she was enormous next to the other pups. I made the mistake of picking her up, and the sales guy said that maybe she wouldn't get too big....? I just laughed at him- my sis has Akita's and I know how big they get- but I just couldn't put that poor puppy back. I found out that someone had taken her home a few days before, but returned her the next day. When I took her to the vet, it turned out she had serious hip displasia, which is probably why she was returned. I decided to keep her, and the vet put her on a some meds and a special diet to help with the dsyplasia. (For some reason, she wasn't a good candidate for surgery). She's been a great dog, and her hips give her minimal trouble. She's now 8 years old and still acts just like a puppy.:)

So far today I've been called home from work to rescue one escaped "Buddy", after I got him back he slipped out again and then again! Been getting my excersie today!

Hubby is fixing the gate as we speak....

I think you need to adopt Sparkle the cat to keep an eye on him. ;)

Wolfy: Better get Buddy chipped then. I'm planning on getting Gidget chipped, because I don't trust her not to take off either (though so far she's been good)

Sad news (at least for us). The neighbor who had desserted the Min Pin had actually given him away to some friends of theirs down the street, but failed to tell us that. They just said they had gotten rid of him, so we assumed (I know bad) that this one was trying to return home and was being refused. Wolfette took out Buddy for a walk this evening and found the new owners who were carrying a picture of this exact dog. They had been wandering the streets looking for him. Wolfette of course returned him and they rewarded her with $25.00 cash.

Hubby and I decided that since we were all ready for dog ownership that we'll get another one this weekend if we can find one deserving. If anyone has a smallish dog that needs a home we would appreciate a PM. We will be looking at the Shelter this weekend and checking Rescues for a year or so old pooch to join our family. The OC Register also has a pet section for dogs/cats that need a good home, we'll be checking that also. Heard that Pet Smart has adoption needs also, another option.

There is a list of all of the breed rescues on the Haute Dogs site. Thing about what type of dog you might want, do some research first and don't be in a hurry to get a dog. This is a LONG commitment and you want to make an informed decision - then go to a rescue. If you want any info or have any questions about different breeds, please ask me. I have have contact with quite a few different breeds.

Yes PetSmart has adoptions for dogs on Sundays usually. If you are looking for a small dog smallish dog you could start there. It is a commitment and a long term one.

You could also check a local shelter (especially if it isn't a no kill one as there are dogs on dealth row there needing homes).

There are rescue groups out there too i found a chihuahua rescue group that is located in Burbank.

i just want to add that when CM and I adopted Lucy and Ethel we didn't care what kind of dogs they were at the time. We were ready to get a dog and they just so happened to be needing a home. I can't imagine my life without them in it and i do not want to go with a big breed dog again after having them. I love small dogs. :)

Orange County Animal Shelter has a LOT of small dogs.

OC shelter has a lot of a lot of dogs. And chickens.

Oh, what a face. He is really cute.

My dog is chipped. Every time I open the front door, there is he is, ready to make his move. When my mom visits, he always makes a break for it. He knows she's not quick and agile enough to cross the threshold fast and he takes full advantage of her arrivals and departures.

We adopted him through a rescue. Everything I'd read about Cavaliers made me want one, and the woman at the rescue said she'd never heard of a bad Cavalier. I should call her up.

Just remember, if you do too good a job keeping your current pets alive and present, you won't get to experience the joy of new pets as often.

Is the trade-off really worth the effort?

Yep, I got my Jaxie chipped after Katrina. He's indoor only, I think he's 14 (I need to check) and I evacuate with him - but after all the horror stories of people trying to get their animals back, etc - it was cheap peace of mind for me.

One of the local shelters that feeds into Petfinders has some GREAT creative minds working there. Some of the animals' stories are a lot of fun to read (and usually written in first person).

The little Goldiedox looks cute. What an ODD combo for a dog - not to mention the mating procedure! Goldens can be great dogs and they are usually fairly chill (i've met a couple of odd ones, though). Doxies are pretty barky and opinionated but adorable. It would be interesting to see which of the personality traits this guy inherited. The rescue will probably put you through a pretty thorough test and set of questions before you are allowed to adopt. Just be aware of that.

Heh, I was thinking the same thing, but I don't know that much about it so I didn't say anything. To hear you say it, it really must be odd. Huh. I guess the Dachshund was the female?

And so true about the adoption procedure. I was thoroughly interviewed before we got our Cavalier.

I have seen some odd combos. Pom-Chow is one odd one and a Lab-Chi is another.

It was as funny looking as what you are picturing in your mind. GREAT dog though: TONS of playful and happy personality

I've seen a photo floating around the intertubes of a dog with the body of a corgie and the head of a german shepherd.

Thanks Betty for the link to the OC Animal Shelter! Our new pooch will be picked up next week sometime. Neutered, Licensed, Chipped, De-fleaed (sp?) , and all Shots up to date. He is a 3 year old Min Pin/Chihauhau mix. Will post pics later this week.

At least Buddy gets to be back with his family and Wolfette got some cash (and the rewards for doing the right thing). And good for you for adopting a shelter-doggie! Congrats on your new upcoming addition! Post pictures!

Ive seen a couple of those. I couldn't identify the breed but the owner showed up so I could ask him what the heck this dog was. He had the body of a hound, mostly, slightly taller than a hound, don't remember what his head looked like. And he was all black, which was odd for a hound.

Again, one of those that you kind of wonder how they got together.

Apparently, I am adopting back a Bearded Dragon that someone picked up from us a couple of years ago. I also found out that they have been leaving the poor guy's lights on 24/7 - WTF?!? :mad: :mad: :mad:

Yeah, I gotta figure out what to do for this. I am hoping that I can just put him in a normal situation and he will be okay.

I don't know. It really pisses me off because I know we talked about this more than once. I know they had a timer on the lights originally because I helped them set their enclosure up. But they later moved it out to the garage (which they shouldn't have: but at least they don't park their cars in the garage), so who knows.Yeah, I'm worried what I am getting. I am trying to get him as soon as possible since we are leaving for Yosemite in a few days.

Poor little guy is probably blind. :(

I spoke with Dr. Greek - arguably the best reptile vet on the West Coast - and he said just put him right onto a normal schedule and he should be fine.

I'm thinking about picking him up tonight just so I can start working on his health. I am worried about how well them have been feeding him.

Probably gummy worms. :rolleyes:

Couldn't get in touch with them last night. Corresponded with them today and they said that their son (who he was acquired for) wants to keep him. So I reminded them of the key points (timer was the number one item).

I will follow up with them on Sunday just to make sure.

And I will visit with them when I get back. Since they live right around the corner from Nirvanaman, it will be a dual purpose trip.

Update:

We are getting the dragon after all. Due to a failed business, they are losing their house and have to move into an apartment. Hence they will need to find a new home for the dragon.

We will be taking him in tomorrow and have a place to put him. However, if anyone is looking to get a dragon, I can get you set up as they also have an enclosure they need to move out.

Dog #3 arrivived yesterday.PoohDog had no issues with Diego, but Scruffy went into his short dog posturing. Today is much calmer. I will be looking into vets this week and getting the younger 2 neutered.

There are 3 different senior pugs in high-kill shelters in North LA. One in Chatsworth, one in Lancaster and one in Burbank. I'm looking for people to spring them from the shelter and foster them until they can go to a rescue in Texas. Anyone interested?

Any idea on how long we'd have to foster?

Petunia was picked up from Matt and Rose's this morning and is on her way to my friend Kendie's after making a stop at my house and meeting Thurston and Kimchi (and Rupert). Kimchi was a little stinker wild thing and had to be restrained by Chris where she screamed as much as she could with no voice. From Kendie's she'll be on her way to San Diego and her foster home.

Did I miss something in the saga? Who is Rupert?

Rupert is my black cat (one of my bottle babies from last year). Petunia is a senior girl we pulled from the Chatsworth shelter. Matt fostered her for a couple days until we could get her down to her foster home in San Diego with SD Pug Rescue.

OK...I even met Rupert. You have to excuse me..there are just so many critters to keep up with.

What? Critters? I only have 11 plus rescues and fosters.

Rupert is beautiful - Petunia is all tongue, very endearing.
