Where can I get rid of..........
I have a whole set, dishes, bowls, candlesticks etc of Franscicanware Autumn pattern dishes. Anyone know of a dealer in either the LA, San Diego or Bay Areas that buy these. I know there is always Replacements but it will cost a fortune to even get them there. The other areas I can drive them there.
Also I've got a large number of random coins. Any idea where to figure out if they're worth keeping or a good place to sell them? We're only getting started here today so I'll have more questions as the day goes on. |
What's the test to see if pearls are real? Rub them on your teeth or something?
|
Put them in vinegar. If they dissolve they were real.
But yes, if you rub them on your teeth and they feel grainy rather than smooth then that is a good sign they're real. |
But if they do feel smooth, they may still be real as they may have been treated with something that smooths out the graininess.
|
Take the pearls to a reputable jeweler.
I'd buy your Franciscan in a second, but Bill would kill me. (I am to vintage dishwear what Lisa is to cats.) |
Lisa has a fondness for vintage dishwear also....remember the garage sale?
|
Not like mine. Ask Bill....
|
When I was a kid my friend's dad owned a coin store. I bet there are some still around but it's best to be knowledgeable. I'll ask my mom to contact a cousin who is a coin collector to see how to identify the coins.

Ebay is your friend anytime you want to get a price quote on, well pretty much anything.... |
I replaced parts of my mom's china set through a website that let you connect with sellers and buy as many individual pieces as you want. Like eBay but they had everything china, all organized. It was years ago...
|
More than likely that was Replacements.com
I dont know that they will buy china though. Unicorn Antiques downtown might though. <ETA> I lied ... from their faq Quote:

Ok - old raidios - like the 1930-40ish range - have three of them. Also a hand crank record player in a case/cabinet with all the records - records are about a half inch thick. Any ideas on these?
|
I'd suggest getting an entire space inside an antique mall. Most have small locking cases for little collectibles, and the staff handles all sales. It's done on a consignment basis, so you wouldn't need to manage anything.
|
Arg! Now you're taunting me with that hand crank record player!!!!
|
You are taunting me with the radios!!!!!!
I'm tempted by the Fran. Autumn because we had it when I was a kid, but I just bought new daily stuff and I have 2 other sets of bone china. But, I'll buy any Fiesta. I just want to drive up there and help you rummage!!!!! How about pictures? |
I'm working photos - I "use" the neigbhors wifi and I don't have a strong signal - not sure if I can upload but we'll try tomorrow.
NA I've also found a bit of art decoish jewrey plus a number of scarves and handkerchiefs. |

Just tell me how much you want for it. Vintage jewelry and scarves are always wonderful. Also, vintage kitchen stuff is something I'm always looking for. John and I can fight over it. ;) Oh, and old buttons and cool packaging. |
I'm still trying to figure out a way to get the Franciscan home without Bill finding out...

Here are photos of the radios and record player Here |
John, you NEED the Franciscian. Just tell Bill I said so. :)
Katie, these radios and photograph are probably worth a mint. They're not bakelite - which would be super valuable, but they are pretty darned cool. The waterfall RCA is super cool! Bring them home and I'll help you research them. I know a radio collector in OC. |
I don't think I can fit the victrola - but definately the radios this trip.

Dishes
Photos of the dishes. The three colored platters do not say fiesta on them anywhere. We'll have an inventory of the dishes here in a bit. |
I broached the subject with Bill (he hasn't read this thread). He didn't say yes... but he didn't say no, either. What he said was "You don't need more dishes, but I'm not going to tell you what to do."
So... How much? :D |
Ok here's the list of what's pictured (we found one box of them in the basement so no guarantee there's not more). Make a bid :D Mostly we just want them to have a happy home.
1 Gravy Boat 5 Coffee Mugs 12 Tea Cups 1 Platter 1 Large serving Bowl - round 1 Small Serving Bowl - round 3 Sugar Bowls (one lid has small chip, other two fine) 3 Creamers 1 Teapot (small chip in lid) 1 Covered Butter Dish 1 12” Pitcher (spout has been repaired) 1 Peppermill and Matching Salt Shaker 1 Large Salt & Pepper shakers (Pepper has a chip) (6”) 1 Small Pepper Shaker (4”) Pair of 6” Candle Holders 1 Vinegar & Oil Set with Stoppers 24 Soup/Cereal Bowls 24 Fruit/Dessert Bowls 18 Bread & Butter Plates (6 ½”) 9 Salad Plates (8 ½”) 16 Saucers (1 with a very very small chip) 12 Dinner Plates (two with chips |

Aha, I thought they'd be Edison discs when you mentioned they were thick. Let me get to one of my friends who is into 78's, he knows people who might be able to help you on that. Okay, this is an Edison Diamond Disc machine circa 1910-1920's (probably 1925 or so)

You've all been such a help - thank you. Half this stuff we have no idea what it even is (or that it was even there, the phonograph was wedged under the basement staricase).
And we're only on day one :) |
The pics are awesome. All that stuff is worth $$$. I think you just got something back for the pain of dealing with all of it. :) Damn, Antiques Roadshow isn't coming anywhere near you.
I do love the Franciscan - it's from 1955, you know. As old as Disneyland! |

The plates aren't Fiesta. I'm not sure what they are, but the colors are AWESOME and would go with my Fiesta. I'll buy them from you without question.

Snowflake: I have some 1-sided and glass records, can your buddy give a round estimate of what those go for?
|
New find - table (lg kitchen type table) and chair - they're woden and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. I'll try to get photos. Anyone have any ideas on those.
