Throat Ache!

I am so embarrassed to start a thread on this! I feel like such a baby!

For the past 9 days, I've had what began as a possible sinus infection, mighta-been-a cold, think-it-was-a-flu and now a full-blown what-the-flock-is-this-mystery-virus? I be illin'.

I have labored breathing from congestion, a painful, deep chest cough, a bloody nose from tissue abuse and worst of all, a raw, sore throat that defies words. I can barely swallow and as of midnight, I lost my voice. I've never, ever completely lost my voice.

Here's where you come in! Do any of you have any tips on how to soothe a painful throat ache? I would appreciate any advice muchly.

I have tried Chloraseptic, only to have it burn as I choke. I have drank my own weight in piping hot tea, and am taking Promethazine (an anti-hystamine & cough suppressant) and Tylenol 3 under my Doctor's care for the accompanying fever I had for a few days. The throat pain, however, is unbearable. So much so that I cannot sleep and actually began crying. :( My lips are like two pringles and the inside of my nose feels like a triscuit. And I think I must have swallowed a cheese grater.

Is anybody else sick? I know poor Alisa has been battling the flu, but is anybody else going through the same symptoms that I am? This is really new to me, erego the panicked 4 a.m. post! This thing is hangin' on for dear life and only getting worse.

And in the way too much information department, a lovely bout of PMS to top it all off. I'm so tired and confused that any moment now I'm sure I'll shove a tampon down my throat and pour salt water up my..oh, nevermind. Nobody needs that imagery. Ick. :(

Let's just hope it doesn't gargle back.

Flubber 04-02-2005 06:32 AM

Mousey Girl 04-02-2005 06:43 AM

Ally, it almost sounds like it has turned into Strep Throat. It is time for another trip to the Doc for some anitbiotics.

wendybeth 04-02-2005 09:15 AM

I agree with Mousey Girl, Ally. Any sore throat that is that painful could be strep, unless you have ulcerations in your mouth as well. Then it might be something called Apthous Stomatitis (sp?), which Tori had a few years back. Very painful and since it's viral antibiotics won't do anything. Her dance teacher had this last month, and was put on steroids, which she said helped a lot. (She described exactly the same symptoms as you, Ally). Feel better!

Kevy Baby 04-02-2005 09:23 AM

GusGus is going through something similar. She has been coughing so bad that it actually makes her hork (and the coughing is causing it - no other symptoms to cause the technicolor yawn).

She was at the docs on Thursday and it tuurns to be, of all things, and allergy reaction. Of course got some drugs (in her case, she was taking chugging cough syrup and Nyquil for naught). They seem to be lessening the symptoms but she still couldn't sleep last night (although she is sleeping as I type this thankfully).

Get thee to a doctor M'Lady!

BarTopDancer 04-02-2005 09:58 AM

Get your butt back to the doctor missy. And get a strep culture.

But in the mean time:

Get some chapstick for your lips. Straight up old skool chapstick (doesn't matter what flavor). Avoid the caffinated tea (will dehydrate you).
Gargle with salt water as hot as you can stand it.
Add Honey to your tea ;)
Get some Sprite and OJ
Ludens makes a good lozenge

mousepod 04-02-2005 10:02 AM

Ally,

It could be allergies. Mine are pretty intense lately. Heather, who is usually not affected by allergies, has been tapping my Allegra bottle. So I know they're bad this season.

It could also be strep. Which needs to be taken care of quickly.

Bottom line: it's not worth trying to self-diagnose or medicate, when doctors are available. I agree with Mousey, Kevy, and BTD. Get thee to a doctor.

And feel better soon!

You sound like you caught what I have. It's going around. Not sure what IT is but my voice is weak, nose is runny, coughing, congestion, etc etc. Take some COLDEEZE.

Get better soon. :snuffle:

Or maybe you're pregnant

cirquelover 04-02-2005 11:35 AM

I agree with the go to the Dr crowd. I just sent my mom that way a couple days ago.

Honey in tea can help or my dads old remedy is putting lemon juice in water, heat, then add the honey for sweetness. I grew up on that and it actually soothes a sore throat.

Most of all:
Lots of rest, fluids and try to stay positive!

I'm so sorry you are so sick, get well soon!

dsnylndmom 04-02-2005 11:39 AM

Add another vote to the "get thy bootie to a dr." crowd! If it's strep you need some antibiotics.

Like Cirquelover we also do hot water, lemon juice and honey for bad sore throats. Also try to keep a humidifier in your bedroom if you have one to help keep your throat moisture and drink as much water as you can!!

Big hugs and I hope you get to the bottom of your mystery illness and feel better REAL SOON!!

Not Afraid 04-02-2005 11:47 AM

Another vote for "go to the Dr." - and soon. Strep will not cure itself and can become a more dangerous infection. All of the OTC and home remedies will ease and comfort your symptoms but will not cure what you have. Only a Dr. can determine what it is you really are suffering from and how it should be treated. It sounds like, whatever it is, it is bad enough to warrant a trip to the Doctor.

Kevy Baby 04-02-2005 11:57 AM

I'm sensing a pattern here...

Give your throat a treat.

How to Treat Strep Throat

</B>
Steps: 1. See your doctor for a throat culture. An instant strep throat test can tell you if you have strep throat in less than 30 minutes.

A. Avoid inserting Tampons down your gullet.

2. Take antibiotics as ordered by your doctor - generally 250 mg of penicillin G orally every six hours. The penicillin family is very effective in killing the strep bacteria.

A. For added fun, request a shot in the butt.

3. Check your temperature twice a day, to assess the severity of your infection.

A. That's right, a rectal thermometer.

4. Take aspirin to reduce fever and inflammation.

A. Help keep Johnson and Johnson workers employed.

5. Suck on throat lozenges - especially those containing menthol, benzocaine or phenol, which will help numb the throat.

A. Other types of suckers may not help.

6. Gargle with mint mouthwash or salt water.

A. Rinse your toothbrush in mouthwash between brushings. Strep can live on your toothbrush.

7. Avoid cigarette smoke and other airborne irritants.

A. Try cigars insteaad.

8. Drink ice-cold beverages. Try filling a glass half full of crushed ice, then pouring orange juice over the ice. Let sit for 10 minutes, insert a straw, and suck slowly, letting the icy juice rest a moment on the back of your throat.

A. Give your throat a treat!

9. Add moisture to the air with a humidifier, vaporizer or by sitting in a steamy shower or bath.

A. being naked always intensifies the effectiveness of this therapy.

10. Get lots of rest. Tips: Strep throat loves to piggyback as a secondary infection to mononucleosis. If you have had mono and then have a severe sore throat, suspect strep and see your doctor. Warnings: Left untreated, strep throat can lead to difficulty breathing and faulty heart valves. When in doubt, see your doctor.

Wow Dr. Lickey, some good advice there!

scaeagles 04-02-2005 12:15 PM

Miracle cure all for symptomology - hot theraflu. Knocks you right out at night and you can sleep.

I just came off something similar, with a fever getting up to 103 (when not on medication) for about 5 days. Only really today (day 8 after the start) do I feel even somewhat back to normal. I completely empathize with you and wish you a speedy recovery.

Baileykat 04-02-2005 02:03 PM

Is your throat white?...if it is...you've most likely got strep!

And everyone else is right...nothing but antibiotics will help! Go for an antibiotic injection vs meds...you'll be feeling better in 24 hours!

If it's not strep....the best rememdy besides OTC meds is gargling hot salt water. Discovered this when I was pregnant with Bailey and couldn't take anything stronger than a Tylenol. It helped enough to let me sleep!

Get well soon Ally!

Hugggggggsssss!

AllyOops! 04-02-2005 06:01 PM

Aww! You guys!! You know I'm never, ever to sick to let you all know how much I love and care about all of you! Thank you!! :) :coffee:

Holy ovaries, Kevy! I'm definitely not pregnant! :p

It looks like an emergency trip to the Doctor's office Monday morning. Thankfully, the Tylenol 3 is soothing my aches and making it a bit tolerable to at least swallow a little, and sleep for a few hours. Plus, it was the only way I could actually get out of bed (and most importantly, post! ;)) In fact, I had some hot tea and scrambled eggs this morning! However, I don't want to be reaching for the Tylenol 3's like Tic Tacs. I do recall having strep throat once as a child. I just remember my throat feeling as if it was coated in shards of glass. Much like now.

Another symptom I forgot to mention early this morning- and one I am a little worried about. A swollen, puffy and reddish infected eye. Doesn't this just go from heinous to grody? My right eye is much better, but my left eye is swollen shut in the morning and requires a warm washcloth. This has me concerned.

Thank you so much for all of your tips! I really appreciate them. For those who are, or were ailing, too, big hugs! Please get well!

When I'm a little less loopy, I'll post more! Thank you again! :)

Prudence 04-03-2005 12:59 AM

That was me last weekend. Last few days it felt like someone was sitting on my chest and it was hard to breathe. (Ain't asthma great?) My miracle cure is honey. Don't even need the tea. In a pinch, a big mug of hot water with as much honey as will dissolve helps loads. Honey honey honey.

Hades 04-03-2005 06:03 PM

I just started my vacation today and guess what?! I'm sick as well. Just not as sick as you are AllyShel, dear. My sister came down with strep throat and that has got me wondering if I'm next. I got this chest cold from my nephew (who's birthday is tomorrow! WOOHOO! He's 15! err, um UGH! He's 15! I feel so freakin OLD now! *sigh*). I should really consider giving him a swift kick for his birthday for being so generous with the cold! :p Anyways, you are so not alone in the recovery ward! Just hope you shake the disease quickly, my dear Ally! :coffee:

Yes, and it really is the best remedy, Kevy!

It's also why I would prefer to now go by the name "AllyOfTheBalls".

I was gonna suggest mono or strep.....I had strep on top of mono when I was in high school and it damn near killed me. I didn't know I had strep for soooo long! By the time I got that taken care of, we figured out I had mono....I practically ended up with pneumonia from over-exerting myself. And by over-exerting myself, I mean waking up, sometimes standing....and even  walking. I had to take not only an anti-biotic, but also quite a few steroids. It was a months-long process, too. Get checked out, chicky!!! Go to a doc, stat!!

Feel better!!!

Cadaverous Pallor 04-04-2005 10:45 AM

Feel better, Allybell! Do what all those other people said. :p

tracilicious 04-04-2005 11:17 AM

I rarely go to the doctor. (And I mean rarely. I waited out walking pneumonia for several months this winter.) But I won't mess with strep. It can actually go to your heart and make you very very sick. A simple way to help you know if you have it is to have someone look at the back of your throat with a flashlight. If there are little white dots, it's strep. If there aren't, well, it could probably still be strep. Take TONS of vitamin C. TONS. It will help. Let us know what the doc says!

Not Afraid 04-04-2005 11:39 AM

I remember my former SIL giving me a Mustard Poultice when I had a bad sore throat. She was convinced that this would draw out all of the poisions and help me heal. She applied it to my neck and I remember it hurting like HELL after a while. Somehow, I think it helped - or maybe it was just time.

My family was big on home/holistic remedies. Hot water/salt/vinegar gargles were another popular solution, as was honey/lemon tea - usually chamomile and eating raw garlic.

This is a fun site listing all sort of "Olde Tyme" remidies. I think my family used about 1/2 of them.

cirquelover 04-04-2005 01:17 PM

Ally,
Did you go to the doctor? If not please call him right now!!

Please give us an update when you fel like it!

AllyOops! 04-08-2005 06:57 PM

Aww! Many, many thank you's again & again! What I do without you guys? I never, ever want to find out. :)

I took your good advice & I went to my Doctor's office first thing Monday morning. As it turned out, he diagnosed me with one of the most heinous cases of Sinusitis ever, and told me that I shouldn't have left it untreated as long as I did. My case had gone neglected and as a result, tore my throat up. The eye infection? From the Sinusitis. It was so awful that it infected my sinus cavities, including those behind the eyes. I'm about to gag thinking about my seepy, weepy eyes. :(

So, Pharmacy ahoy! Lots of medicine, mixed with lots of sleep.

Levaquin~ The world's most expensive, but effective antibiotic! At almost $12.00 a pill, and a ten day course at once a day, it should also give me the effects of botox.

Promethazine with Codeine
~ Mmm! Blink real hard and swallow! It's an anti-hystamine, cough suppressant and pain reliever. The stuff makes you feel so wonderful! If by wonderful to you means sleeping 15 hours at a time and walking around in a zombie like state, asking yourself, "Did I dream that, or DO that?" I don't like that feeling at all. However, it's working wonders so I do love the stuff. :)

Sudafed~ Whether by prescription or over-the-counter, it's amazing!

I'm feeling much better, and yesterday was the first day that my body adjusted to the Promethazine and didn't knock me out. Plus, my face has returned to it's normal shape! I knew my sinuses were in trouble when my face morphed. Huge, swollen eyes, nose and puffy cheeks. I've coughed up so many oysters it's unreal. I know nobody needs the imagery of my clam filled kleenex's. :(

I'm still tired and won't push myself to do anything (mainly out of courtesy to others. My cough can be rather dispuptive!)

My lesson? Not to go untreated to the point of depressing my respiratory tract! And as always, being thankful for such wonderful and caring friends like all of you! :)

cirquelover 04-08-2005 08:55 PM

I'm glad you're feeling on the mend. Keep taking the medication and don't over exert yourself. The side effects of meds can be a bummer but sometimes they are needed. A lot of sleep is probably just what you need right now. It will take awhile to feel 100% after being that sick.
