The Big One!!!!

Biggest since Northridge, around these parts. WOW!

CoasterMatt 05-17-2009 08:41 PM

Yowch.

BarTopDancer 05-17-2009 08:41 PM

How big?
Epicenter?

DO NOT WANT!

Kevy Baby 05-17-2009 08:42 PM

Not showing on the USGS map yet

ETA: Oh, c'mon: the initial is only a 4.7 1 mi E of Lennox. It was bigger than that!

ETAA: we're up to a 5.0

DreadPirateRoberts 05-17-2009 08:42 PM

felt it down here

wolfy999 05-17-2009 08:45 PM

That was a nice roller.....just curious where it was centered.

Disneyphile 05-17-2009 08:45 PM

Been upgraded to a 5.0 already.

Everyone alright?

innerSpaceman 05-17-2009 08:45 PM

Well, I have a lot of stuff that rattles, and I had time to walk around and it went on and on at a pretty tremendous thrum rate.

Zlickter scale 7.5

Ghoulish Delight 05-17-2009 08:46 PM

5.0 2 miles ssw of Inglewood. Anyone talked to Lisa? JW? Lindy?

JWBear 05-17-2009 08:48 PM

Wow!

We sure felt it here! A few things got knocked off of shelves. It went on forever!

CoasterMatt 05-17-2009 08:48 PM

I talked to NA for a few moments afterwords.

Ghoulish Delight 05-17-2009 08:49 PM

It wasn't violent here, but we felt it for sure. A good 30-40 seconds of motion (maybe more, I'm knocking about 20 seconds off as my own quivering after the shaking had stopped).

Lisa's checked in, not happy that this happened while Chris is out of town, but otherwise ok.

I feel really bad capitalizing on a (minor) natural disaster, but I couldn't resist.

Alex 05-17-2009 08:51 PM

Dammit! I want one. Don't selfishly hog all of them.

Kevy Baby 05-17-2009 08:51 PM

Apparently, there was a 3.1 aftershock six minutes later.

Ghoulish Delight 05-17-2009 08:52 PM

Debra is ok too.

BarTopDancer 05-17-2009 08:59 PM

I hate hate HATE living by myself right about now.

I also have no idea why, but this one is freaking me out more than normal. You can all laugh at me but I pulled my car out of the garage and grabbed emergency supplies (I just took apart my "kit" since it was so old so I have nothing 'ready').

Motorboat Cruiser 05-17-2009 09:11 PM

Felt it just fine in Dana Point. Enough shaking to get us headed for the door. Then again, we are on the second story.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:11 PM

omg

Can my heart stop beating so fast now?

I'm fine. Stuff got knocked down but everyone is good. Thurston is freaked out a bit but the cats are so over it. Rupert was on my shoulder so I have some nice claw marks in my back.

It was NOT rolling here and it lasted quite a while. It was a definite shaker and a noisy one at that. The worst part for me is that Chris is in Chicago. He hasn't gotten my texts as of yet. I would REALLY like to touch base with him.

I've been through quite a few and this one was worse for me than Whittier. I am also MUCH closer to the epicenter than that one. At least I wasn't on the toilet for this one. ;)

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:13 PM

Cell service is finally back up.

JWBear 05-17-2009 09:13 PM

Yes, definitely a shaker.

(Why do I suspect that Kevy will quote that one too?)

Yes, that might explain it. A five earthquake file miles from here. Yeah.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:15 PM

Yup, when it it close to home it feels MUCH worse.

JWBear 05-17-2009 09:18 PM

I was just thinking of all those travelers at LAX that just felt their first earthquake...

Yep, we were far enough away from this one that it felt like a train was coming.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:19 PM

It felt like the train was in my house.

madmonkeygirl 05-17-2009 09:19 PM

Felt it here. But only a few seconds so it seemed. Nothing worse than the washing machine does the same thing when i am doing a load of laundry. Life goes on.

Last quake felt it much worse and i was alone. Animals seem fine here.

My parents didn't even feel it although my dad felt something my mom nothing.

Disneyphile 05-17-2009 09:20 PM

My cousin (who's never lived outside of Vegas) just noted on my Facebook that it's "tough to know you'll see a 7.0 someday". I replied, "So will the unsuspecting tourists who happen to be here at the same time."

I love how some people who don't live here pick on us for living in a quake zone, yet they must honestly think it won't happen when they come here on vacation. At least we'll know what to do.

madmonkeygirl 05-17-2009 09:22 PM

LOL i'd laugh if it happens when we're in Orlando in 15 days lol....

How do you tell a SoCal native apart from a transplant?

Spoiler:
The amount of time it takes them to react to a quake.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:23 PM

Considering LA is a top tourist destination, it is likely that there will be quite a few people who feel an earthquake while visiting.

It would sure suck if Orlando had a 7.0 when you were there. Actually it would suck if Orlando had a 7.0 at any time. I don't think they're nearly as prepared for it as we are. Not that I want one here.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:31 PM

Chris is with Erica in Chicago and both were very upset they missed it...NOT.

mousepod 05-17-2009 09:32 PM

H grabbed Inca and ran for the door. I know where her priorities lie.

:( You never put on a big one for us... Boo hoo.

BarTopDancer 05-17-2009 09:49 PM

As I was talking to Erica we realized it is centered right by Tramspotter's house. Sent him a text, hope he and his family is ok.

I just discovered that my Lost in Space Robot rolled about 6 inches from where it was. It almost knocked the Fauna figurine off the shelf.

Not Afraid 05-17-2009 09:54 PM

I've got art work down all over the place. Nothing damaged though.

Alex 05-17-2009 10:06 PM

Looks like USGS has reduced it to a 4.7.

Kevy Baby 05-17-2009 10:23 PM

Yeah, I wish they would make up their minds...

madmonkeygirl 05-17-2009 10:48 PM

yeah i'd laugh if i were in Orlando and the big one hit here....lol ha i laugh in the face of danger. And it would be more likely that while in Orlando they wouldn't experience an earthquake rather the weather and it being severe thunder storms and hurricanes etc.

Time for me to go work on something more productive than be ridiculed by my posts. Carry on nothing more....

"when the world gets in my face i say...have a nice day"...

Morrigoon 05-17-2009 11:40 PM

4.7?

You guys don't mind if Cherny and I share a private chuckle, do you? Nothing personal :)

Moonliner 05-18-2009 04:22 AM

Sorry to hear the news of the quake, glad everyone is OK.

I'm confused. If you were in Florida, you'd be laughing in the face of the danger of others, not your own danger.

Hmmm... Depends, I guess. ;)

Snowflake 05-18-2009 08:43 AM

Glad everyone is okay, been offline and out of the loop. Long rolling quakes are not fun. We're overdue for a good jolt up here, too.

Morrigoon 05-18-2009 10:34 AM

It's a bit weird how we've had such a cluster of them the last few months. I suppose that's a good thing, relieve a little pressure rather than building up. But there have been quite a few, haven't there?

Ghoulish Delight 05-18-2009 10:52 AM

There have been more than there have been in a while, but it's far from "weird". We live on top of several of the most active faults in the world, this is entirely within the realm of "expected".

It's a myth that small quakes prevent large ones.

Quote:

The Mtyh: "Small earthquakes keep big ones from happening". Each magnitude level represents about 30 times more energy released. It takes 30 magnitude 3s to equal the energy released in a magnitude 4, 900 magnitude 3s to equal a magnitude 5 … and 729 billion magnitude 3s to equal a single magnitude 9. So while a small quake may temporarily ease stress on a fault line, it does not prevent a large temblor.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-18-2009 12:00 PM

We were at DCA on Monsters Inc when it "happend." Didn't feel anything but we walked onto Hollywood Blvd and it was filled with people. We learned they evacuated all the rides.

The stores were open though.

Didn't feel it here in Hawai'i.
;) :D

innerSpaceman 05-18-2009 12:59 PM

That's funny. I thought for a moment I heard the raucous applause for your show last night, before the rumbling earthquake drowned it out.

Well, you did have a fore-shock: 3.1 magnitude, 5 mi WNW of Kalaoa, HI, about an hour-and-a-half before ours.

lizziebith 05-19-2009 03:23 AM

Out in the Valley, the extreme West side of our eating-place felt it, but the East did not.

I felt a rumbling in my feet...sustained -- and it was a weird insistent vibration...and I looked around but only a guy sitting near me also noticed. We caught each other's eyes and knew. Everyone else teased us.

My hubby, about a foot and 1/2 away felt nothing. Me and the other guy who felt it were convinced it was a quake, but all the other patrons said "truck."

Oh, I was barefoot, but the other guy was not. I'm going to go barefoot more often.:) I like having my flesh pressed against my planet.

Kevy Baby 05-19-2009 11:59 AM

At least it wasn't the big black one

Yes, I felt that here in Long Beach. Just one large jolt and that was it. Looked it up...was only a 4.1 near Hawthorne.

Prudence 05-19-2009 05:05 PM

It was fun!

Of course, the cats do not agree. Sasha was okay after the first one, but Boris was just starting to come out from under the bed again and actually slept with us this morning - then came today. Now I'm pretty sure neither of them is ever coming out from under the bed.

Gemini Cricket 05-19-2009 05:08 PM

Every time I read this thread title, I picture Steve running around in circles with his arms flailing in a mall or Downtown Disney somewhere screaming, "It's the Big One! It's here, I told you! Run for your lives, people!"

So, ya didn't feel it in GG?

We are heading up this weekend. Usually, there is some sort of quake right after we leave, I mean, like, while we are driving home or literally when we must have just gotten on the freeway. {seriously, after each visit we've had recently}

Are we tempting fate?

We'll be up Fri/Sat. Not at the park. Darn it, so cal blacked out Friday. :0(

alphabassettgrrl 05-21-2009 07:29 PM

My mom was here for this one. My hubby says to her "this might be your first earthquake". She runs into the living room, where a floor lamp is swaying, wide-eyed. I look, and note that wow, yes, the lamp is swaying, this probably is an earthquake.

Mom decided this "wasn't too bad". And it wasn't. Here. We spent the next half hour looking at the USGS earthquake site.
