Cemetery Screenings
New shows announced for June - just shy of the 21st solstice
May 30 - Sleeper June 6 - Cat People (the 1942 version) June 13 - Funny Face June 20 - The Graduate |
I'd love to see the 1942 Cat People but I think I have plans on June 6. I cannot recall what plans, but the date is bumbling around in brain. Hmm.
In case anyone was thinking of attending, tonight's showing of Cat People has been canceled due to weather.
Yes, on the most beautiful day we've had all week.
Meanwhile, I am really disappointed with the cemetery line-up this year so far. The Graduate might not be bad, tho. Haven't seen that in a while. And, ya know, April-December romances are my specialty. ;) |
Sorry to hear the show was cancelled. Anyone want to join H and me at Spaceland tonight for some shameless glam?
Next up:
6/27 East of Eden 7/4 Jaws 7/5 Brazil 7/11 Night of the Iguana 7/12 The Wicker Man 7/18 Bride of Frankenstein *** Disappointed that Wicker Man didn't play the solstice, but still think it would be fun to see in the cemetery. Brazil is also tempting, but I wish these were the Saturday Screenings instead of the Sunday. Eh well, I think we're overdue a picnic |
Brazil and Bride are the showings that interest me the most.
Oooooh, Brazil. It's almost fun to just which of the 3 or 4 versions they'll screen.
And, huh, cemetery screening on Fourth of July??!? Jaws is an excellent film. I'm so sad to realize i have no plans this 4th, and it's a bloody Saturday! Ugh. |
I have never seen any of those films. What a sad childhood was mine.
Time continues. Come to the cemetery while you're still alive!

Next up - for those who want a little more info:

We are considering going to that one.
Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen it all the way through, just bits and pieces here and there. Um, yeah, that shot of J.D. makes me lust for more than bits and pieces.
Tempted in more ways than one. |
I love East of Eden - if I wern't in the middle of moving I'd totally be there.
oooh, pfft, just buy the bluray, install some headstones, and you're in biz right there at home.
Very true
East of Eden shows JD at his very hottest. It's funny though how the movie basically is the very last part of the book (as in, the last 150 or so pages of a 500 page novel).
I'm waffling. On the one hand, I'd gotten weekends mixed up and this is a Saturday that CP works. I'm not feeling particularly motivated to endure the "rush out of here at 6, get through traffic, pray for parking" grind. But on the otherhand, if peeps will be there, it could certainly be worth it. Especially since this might be one of those rarer and rarer uncrowded nights at the cemetery. Ponder ponder.
One night, I will have nothing on my schedule and I will go to the Cemetery. I hope it will be this Summer. Sadly, it's not going to be tonight.
ok, i'm confused. GD texted me that he and CP are going. I guess the pondering is over. I can be there in a little while (hmm, quarter after 5 now). I think I'll chance it, hoping indeed for one of the rare, uncrowded nights ... or we'll be waaaay back in line.
Yeah, talked myself into it. See you there.
July 18th is Bride of Frankenstein
July 25th is The Muppet Movie |
We are there for The Muppet Movie, absolutely.
You and half the population of Los Angeles.
East of Eden was hella crowded. I'm never going to attend anything remotely popular. |
We had a fun time last night. But I really don't think we can go anymore.
I nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to get into the place. Traffic, crawling on the street for half an hour, ugh. Not happy. And this was just for East of Eden. When they mentioned they were doing the Muppet Movie I was simultaneously happy and sad. I knew there was no way I'd want to deal with the crowds. I'm sure it'll be a great time, but I know I personally just can't hack it anymore. |
I think the next time we go for these, we'll park a few blocks away and take the bicycles to the actual cemetary.

Believe me, you are glad you weren't in the car with us. |

For something I'd actually be motivated to see, I'd just get there a bit earlier. Last night's 5:30 for a 7:15 gate was not a bad wait at all ... but you have to be able to do that as a minimum. For something special, I'd consider getting there a couple hours earlier than that. But for ultra mega-popular screenings, its become the kind of crowdmassive I don't much like to deal with, either. * For a vast amount of people, last nights cemetery screening was blessed with one of the most mellow crowds ever. People were not inappropriately loud or disruptive during the film, there wasn't constant screen-block traffic to-and-from the restrooms. It was atypically placid. Which is why it was so odd when a girl stood up for a moment, and some crochety old guy yelled from the back, "Hey, could you not stand there please, sitdown!!" And a minute later, a young crochety guy walks over to the people in front of us and scolds them for a bout of laughter when someone tripped over them in the dark, telling them earnestly, "Um, you know, this is motion picture and we're all trying to watch it." Sheesh, What the Fvck?? Other than that, everyone seemed in a delightful mood of happy moviefest picnic time. And I genuinely like the vibe at the cemeterey screenings almost every time I go. Last night was actually stellar in that regard when nearly the entire crowd got up and danced to Michael Jackson. It was radtastic. |
Yeah, no more racing there from work for me. I'll only go if we can get there very early, park on the street, and hang out in line.
Maybe Sunday the 12th Wickerman screening will be different because that's not one I want to miss.
Oh, that's this coming Sunday.
Naked Pagan Fest at the cemetery??? |
Sounds like fun. Shame I won't be able to make it. Have we determined which version of the movie will be shown?
Well, laying aside the remake, were there multiple versions of the original Wicker Man?
Maybe they're making that a Sunday speciality. There were, of course, many versions of the movie shown last week, Brazil. I wonder which one of those was screened. Maybe that's the gimmick to get people out there on a Sunday night. |
Quote:
I was disabused of my fantasy belief that they used "prints" of films at the cemetery screenings, when there was a rather obvious DVD problem with East of Eden a couple of weeks ago.
Bah. |
The 1970's version of the Wicker Man they will be showing is 100 minutes long. Don't know which version that makes it (other than it is not the remake).
If they're using a DVD and it's 100 minutes, it's the long version. The edit is less than 90 minutes.

So do you suppose Sunday's screening of the Wicker Man is clothing optional?
I believe I saw that on the website somewhere.
I'll be picking up some picnic things today for attending tomorrow's screening of Wicker Man - anyone else going?
Might be a possibility. It'll depend on if I feel like being tired at work on Monday.
I'd like to ... but my weekend plans are majorly in flux.
I believe we are strongly considering it.
I think |
We're going to be up in the valley during the day tomorrow and will have chairs and blanket in the car. Right now I'm putting us at about 89% likely to go.
Call us - we will likely try the usual strategy of going early, parking on the street and walking in
I'm tempted, I really want to go to a screening this summer... but the ending really bothered me.

Yay, I'm so glad we were able to go! This Sunday screening has COMPLETELY redeemed the experience for us. No worries, thin crowd, great movie (this was our second viewing and it was even better this time around), and of course good company. I'm a little tired this morning, but well worth it.
We had a great t ime last night and we wern't home TOO late. The WIckerman is such a great film and it gets better with additional viewings. It was nice to pull out picnic table out of storage and get some use our of it. It was a simplet wonderful evening.
I do have to share one of my favorite comments from the crowd during the night. When the Wickerman first makes an appearance on the screen, someone said "it's just like Burning Man!".
This morning I finally discovered who had done a remake of the will song - Sneaker Pimps, How Do - now I can't listen to it without wanting to slap the walls and brush against desk ornaments.
And, he's going to be doing that with only the cats watching because I'm heading out for a bit. Have fun, sweetheart. ;)

I suppose I could go slap the neighbor's house, but then, I'm not really the landlord's daughter |
A wonderful evening with wonderful company. And Wicker Man is better the second time around.

This weekend at the Cemetery: Cheech and Chong's UP IN SMOKE.
What do you suppose that will be like? ;) but no more Sunday screenings after that. Guess that idea didn't pan out. |
I like it hot, do you?
Planning on attending my first cemetery screening (for shame) of the very busy year this weekend. Anyone else? Some Like it Hot http://www.cinespia.org/ |
Mmmm, tempting.
We are a possible.
Ooh, one of my very favorites. I don't know if we'll be able to go, but I LOVE it.
August Schedule now posted.
Can't say I'm at all inspired by the selections this season ... but I have a soft spot for Singin' in the Rain (Aug. 22). |
How can you not be inspired by Singin'?
I miss cemetery screenings and Some Like It Hot is especially tempting. Alas, I have shows every Saturday night, so I'm out. :(
Of all of the films announced for August, I'm thinking Some Like It Hot may be a good bet to attend.
Playing it by ear. Would love to see the flick, and the LoT crew, but we're going out tomorrow night (Pageant of the Masters, yay!) so we may or may not be of a mind to do two nights in a row. We shall see.
Pageant of the Masters is teh awesome. (And so weird!) Enjoy.
I have another thing Saturday night. Less enjoyable, likely. But peeps I haven't seen in a while. Torn, but that will likely win out. A friend's 40th birthday. |
Most of the time, I slap it!
Interested, but not feeling up to dealing with parking stress and we're planning to drive up the coast Saturday having relaxing "us" time.
Damn need to do pageant of the masters this summer too. No time!
So my route to this birthday party took me right past the cemetery entrance at 8:30, when the film is scheduled to start. OMG, there was still a line of approx. 50 people being let in, with more people still arriving.
WTF? insanity. |
It was crowded, but a well behaved crowd (well, except for the bitch who walked up an hour after the gates opened and just started moving E&A's chairs without asking). We had a really good time, loved the movie.
It was a great evening. Crowded but not a rude crowd at all. Other than the one bitch GD mentioned, it was a wonderful evening. We had great seats and only got there an hour before gates. The movie was wonderful! Lovely evening.
I''d like to watch Some Like It Hot on an outdoor screen at the Del Coronado, along with co-feature The Stunt Man. (Both wonderful films shot partly on location at that great hotel.)
So, this coming Saturday, the 22nd, as the season draws to a close ...
[Lina Lamont]Singin'.In.The.Rain.[/Lina Lamont] Anyone?? |
If we didn't have other plans, I would love to go. This would be a fun one to see.
Hey! I'll be in town.
But I think my Saturday evening is booked. |
we should go dressed as droogs
NirvanaMan and I will be singing in the rain this Saturday. Very much looking forward to it.
Mind if I join you?
I'll understand if it's, like, a luv-date. |
I think we're considering as well.
I hope we all can go. We can make a laughing stock out of Lina Lamont.
The more the merrier.
I'm going to try - I really need a change of scenery.
Who knows. My life is full of scheduling at the moment. I'm not sure I want to "schedule" something more. Besides, we're getting new bedroom windows on Saturday.
Enjoy it while you can. Forever, the Cassity family (owners of Hollywood Forever) and a bunch of subsidiaries of the same have been sued, RICO charges and pillaging of the pre-need funds sold, etc. Apparently they have or are in the process of surrendering the properties and assets.
The Complaint is huge, thanks gods of any variety I'm not a litigator. That would have been pure misery for me. In any case, thought you'd like to know the days of screenings may be coming to a close. |
OK, I had to do some research since about half of what you posted meant nothing to me as a non-legal professional. This is one article I found.

I'm waiting to hear about some tentative plans. I know I've said that a lot this summer, I really want to go and I know this movie will be an awesome one.

Seems if they are having legal problems there's all the more need to generate revenue through such things as film screenings.

So they need to raise prices?
We're interested in going but don't want to join in the parking fray. Is there anyone we can carpool with? We'd drive to you, then ride the rest of the way.
Bah. Sophie's Movie Choice between Indiana Jones Triple-Feature at the Egyptian and Singin' in the Rain at the Cemetery.
I'm gonna choose Singin' in the Rain, but it's a tough one. Friends going to both. Sorry, Pru ... can't give you a lift. I'll be out and about, and don't know where I'll be coming from. Good luck. Parking's not a pain. Just drive. |

I'm in - what time again???
Boo hiss! My tutoring client changed her appointment from early afternoon to late afternoon. Babysitting issues, apparently. Generally, if a client changes their very first meeting 4 times prior to the meeting taking place, in a 24 hour time span, it's a sign of danger to come.
Alas, I need the income, so no cemetery swanking for me. |
I'm heading out in a few. See you all there.
Anyone going tonight?
I'm stuck at work until 8:00pm.
But it's a full day of OT, so I'm not complaining. :) |
American Werewolf does nothing for me. I'd like to go once more, so we'll see what the last few shows are.
But this season has been highly disappointing to me. There were two I was interested in, but had other plans. And two others I was interested in, and went. Grand total of 4 interesteds for the entire summer. Lame. |
I love American Werewolf in London but it's a True Blood night.
Next week is Being There. LOVE that film and am working in Downtown that day, so we're probably a go. |
I like to watch.
ooooh, Being There. That's an awesome film. I could be Being There for that.
Thank you Chance. Would you like to go work in the garden now?
At least once a day, TCM shows a mini documentary that highlights Cinespia among others. It plays a lot. I hope it helps them out and keeps the program going.
:) |
So ... anyone up for the Last Cemetery Screening of the Season? ROSEMARY'S BABY.
Hmmm - it is Polanski
