Into the Woods - Affordable Swanking

The historic Gem theater in Garden Grove is showing "Into the Woods" starting this weekend, running until July 19th.

I've yet to attend one of their shows, but they seem popular every time we go by.

So, would anyone like to join us for a show? Cost is only $20 per ticket and can be ordered online at this link:

Tickets and Show Info

The theater is on Main St. in Garden Grove, and within very short walking distance from a few great restaurants.

So, if you'd like to go, please select a date in the poll and let's see about meeting up for dinner prior too! (If we pick a Friday or Saturday night, we could always walk over to Azteca for drinks and free karaoke after too.)

There are also Thursday night performances as well, but I didn't include those in the poll, figuring they wouldn't be considered. But, if that's a night you can make it, then please post!

LSPoorEeyorick 06-18-2009 11:24 AM

Tom and I are both Sondheim maniacs and try to catch every production of his shows that go up locally. So we're definitely interested.

We're unfortunately only available for the 3rd or 5th. Weekday nights are out (except the 3rd which we have off) because I never know when I'll be done at work, and anything after the 9th is out because ItW isn't really his cup of tea. Hope we can catch it alongside of all of you!

Thanks for coming up with this idea - sounds fun.

Disneyphile 06-18-2009 11:43 AM

Hopefully, most can make it on the 3rd or 5th. I figure those are good dates, since a lot of people will be in town and such. :)

Once we get closer, I'll post up the local restaurant menus. There's a new place just opening up a few doors down from Azteca.

wolfy999 06-18-2009 11:46 AM

Have to see what I'm scheduled to work and go from there. If it works out that I'm off I will join you guys for sure.

JWBear 06-18-2009 01:01 PM

That's close to my work...

I'm interested, but I don't know about Mr Bill.

Morrigoon 06-18-2009 01:12 PM

Same boat as Wolfy... I love Into The Woods, but gotta wait till schedules come out. Fridays are better for me because I am not obligated to the Mouse on Fridays. Oddly enough, the 3rd might work :)

Is it 1st come, 1st served seating? Or assigned? (never know with local theaters, could go either way)

Ghoulish Delight 06-18-2009 01:14 PM

Would love to join the group, but all free time in July is pre-committed to family visiting from Alaska. See y'all in August!

katiesue 06-18-2009 01:52 PM

Darn I always miss all the fun stuff - we're moving all through that time so I'm out.

Everyone's coming to help move right? ;)

Capt Jack 06-18-2009 01:58 PM

dang, I was hoping this was a 'cheapskate camping trip' thread.

I called and the box office won't be open with a live person until tonight. We're walking right past there tonight, so I'll stop and check, but the website says "General Admission" which usually means first-come, first-served. I'll also ask about group rates. :)

Oh, and they changed the end date to the 12th, not the 19th, so it's good I didn't list those.

wolfy999 06-18-2009 02:17 PM

What's the new restaurant opening on Main Street? Sounds interesting.

7 Seas Fish House. It looks really nice. They finally just got the tables and chairs put in. The exterior is very upscale and a bit Mediterranean in design. And, according to their website, they'll have weekly "artist nights". Sounds really neat!

Morrigoon 06-18-2009 02:29 PM

I'd be willing to give it a shot. Historic Main is so cute, I'd love to see it be a bigger local draw.

lashbear 06-18-2009 06:36 PM

Count me out. :p

Prudence 06-18-2009 07:34 PM

We might be interested. I've never seen this one.

wolfy999 06-18-2009 07:37 PM

Great story...just did the production at my daughter's school a few weeks ago.

JWBear 06-18-2009 08:42 PM

I love ITW (especially if the wolf is cute)!

alphabassettgrrl 06-21-2009 08:56 PM

Don't know that I can make it, but it sounds like fun! I love ITW!

wolfy999 06-22-2009 06:26 AM

I have the 3rd off, so placed my vote for Friday night!

Disneyphile 06-22-2009 11:02 AM

Never got a chance to walk by and see if the seating is assigned. Will call them during the next open hours. :)

DreadPirateRoberts 06-23-2009 09:57 AM

If you join Goldstar (free), tickets are $10

According to Mrs. DPR, there is a nominal fee (not free)

Disneyphile 06-25-2009 09:11 PM

Stopped by the box office tonight. Seating IS assigned, and a lot of tickets/seats are still available for July 3rd.

So, let's shoot for that date. Can we all order tickets tomorrow night or Monday? If we coordinate, I can shoot an email over to them to see if they'll hold a block of seats for us.

wolfy999 06-26-2009 10:07 AM

Wolfette and I are in for sure. Let me know when and I'll make sure to get the tickets for the two of us. What are the box office days & hours?

Disneyphile 06-26-2009 06:59 PM

Those who want to sit together, PayPal me by Monday at 5pm and I'll order the tickets. (Disneyphile at gmail dot com). Be sure to use the "gift" option so that it doesn't take out fees.

And, those who don't want to do that, just go ahead and order your own, since I'm sure we'll mingle before and after the show anyway. :)

After tickets are procured, let's discuss dinner! :D

Morrigoon 06-26-2009 07:00 PM

I can drop off $, just tell me how much with tax, etc.

Disneyphile 06-26-2009 07:01 PM

Tickets are $20 + $2 handling fee per ticket, so $22 total. :)

I'll also be home all day on Sunday and Monday if anyone wants to drop by.

wolfy999 06-27-2009 07:35 AM

I e-mailed you the ticket money before I saw the note on the extra $2.00 service fee....I'll pay you ($4.00) for that on Friday before the show. Hope that's OK?

I went ahead and sent it by PayPal....don't like to owe money, so we're all set.

You should probably also give her a little more as I suspect she gets dinged for PayPal's service charge as well.

ETA: Didn't mean to sound snippy: it is just a small detail that oft gets overlooked and can add up for the recipient.

wolfy999 06-27-2009 09:17 AM

Sent as a gift, like she suggested, so not dinging will happen.

alphabassettgrrl 06-27-2009 09:57 PM

We may be up for this.

Not Afraid 06-27-2009 10:26 PM

Depending on the day chosen, it sounds fun.

LSPoorEeyorick 06-28-2009 06:40 AM

I believe the day chosen was 4/3 (this Friday.) Hope you guys can make it!

DP, I'll be sending my PayPal payment to you today.

Not Afraid 06-28-2009 08:48 AM

I guess I should back track through posts I've missed while MIA.

Disneyphile 06-28-2009 09:24 PM

Wolfy - received your funds!

I'll order online tomorrow evening, so if anyone still needs to send me money or drop it off, please do so tomorrow (Monday) by 5pm. I can wait a little bit longer into the evening if you let me know, but I need to know by then, please.

(It's just that when I spoke to the box office, they recommended getting tix for more than 3-4 people as early in advance as possible to guarantee adjacent seating.)

Morrigoon 06-28-2009 10:15 PM

D-phile: will you be at home during the day?

Yeppers! I'll be working. :)

Disneyphile 06-29-2009 11:57 AM

Kevy and GusGus are also going too. :)

wolfy999 06-29-2009 12:09 PM

Sounds like we've got a nice group going!

I guess I should go look at what it is we are doing now...

Go ahead and PayPal it, please. I have a PayPal debit card, so will use that to buy the tickets. :) Be sure to flag it as a "gift" so there won't be fees.

$40?

Disneyphile 06-29-2009 02:13 PM

$44, including the box office fees.

Also, we now have Alphabassetgrrl and her hubby joining us. :)

Prudence 06-29-2009 02:24 PM

Crap - stuck in DC and can't set up paypal on this internet connection (not secure.) Guess we'll try to get separate seats for the Rat and I and mingle before/after.

Disneyphile 06-29-2009 04:19 PM

Ok, I've got everyone's funds at this point. Any last minute additions, or can I go ahead and order?

We've got 13 that I'm ordering:

Pru & Rat
Wolfy & Wolfette
Kevy & GusGus
Morrigoon
Alphabassetgrrl & Hubby
LSPE & Tom
Ken & Me

Any others?

Disneyphile 06-29-2009 07:56 PM

UPDATE: I've placed the order for 13 tickets, and am awaiting confirmation from the box office once they assign the seating.

Also, I believe there is a "group rate" for over 10 tickets, and if so, you'll all be getting a bit of cash back with your tickets on Friday. Not sure how much it will be though. Will post once the box office contacts me.

alphabassettgrrl 06-29-2009 10:12 PM

I can't wait!

wolfy999 06-30-2009 06:47 AM

Now for dinner plans?

Disneyphile 06-30-2009 12:03 PM

Within very short walking distance-

Azteca
Main Street Pizza (They also have salads and pastas.)
Doug's Main Street Grill (Burgers, steaks, salads, etc.)
7 Seas Fish House (If open by then.)

Oh, and there is a classic car show that takes over the main block of Main St. On Friday evenings, so if any of you like that sort of thing, it's really cool to check out. That also means the restaurants are a little busier then, so I recommend we do dinner no later than 6 to guarantee seating and adequate time for slower service.

alphabassettgrrl 06-30-2009 12:14 PM

Hmm... dinner sounds good...

wolfy999 06-30-2009 12:43 PM

I vote for Pizza, would make it cheap and easy for everyone.

Morrigoon 06-30-2009 01:22 PM

Cheap is good, so I'd say either pizza or Azteca, but I'm guessing Kevy and GusGus would rather we didn't do Azteca. So pizza's looking like a winner.

I assume we don't know the price point on the fish place yet, but being fish, I'll venture a guess it's a little more than the others.

Disneyphile 06-30-2009 01:55 PM

We walked by last night and checked the menu by the door. It's average - $9-$15 per entree, but affordable for a fish place, considering their Surf n' Turf with filet mignon is only $14.95.

Main St. Pizza is a pretty good place. Haven't been lately, but they used to have a "large pizza with pitcher of beer" combo for like $16 - it was perfect for splitting amongst four people.

alphabassettgrrl 06-30-2009 02:11 PM

Shawn's vote is the grill as first choice, pizza as second choice.

Disneyphile 06-30-2009 02:36 PM

FYI - the box office doesn't reopen until tomorrow at noon, so I won't know our seating assignments until then.

Disneyphile 06-30-2009 03:03 PM

Oh, and I also just remembered that the pizza place takes the orders at the counter, so it's easy for people to get their own items, or team up with others on pizza, etc. :)

LSPoorEeyorick 06-30-2009 08:01 PM

As long as they will do salad or pasta or cheeseless pizza for Tom (who can't eat protein) we're OK for the pizza place.

They do have salads, pasta and all, so you're fine! :)

Disneyphile 07-01-2009 05:04 PM

SEATING UPDATE:

Tickets have been confirmed. There was no group discount, so that advice apparently wasn't true. So, they were all still full price of $20 + $2 per ticket service charge.

Anyway, the rows seat only 12 people, so they have placed 11 of us in Row G and 2 of us in Row F.

I will be picking them up tomorrow, so we can distribute at dinner and just prior to the show for those not coming to dinner without worrying about box office lines. :)

wolfy999 07-02-2009 06:34 AM

So am I correct in understanding that we meet at Main Street Pizza at 6PM?

Just making sure this is what we've decided on.

Looks like the most popular option! :)

Sohrshah 07-02-2009 07:20 PM

lance and I may show up for the Pizza, but alas the play itself is a little outside our price range right now!

Disneyphile 07-02-2009 07:26 PM

We've picked up the tickets! See you all at Main St. Pizza tomorrow evening. :) (It is directly across the street from Azteca.)

For those arriving for the show only, please text or call my cellphone and let me know tomorrow, so I can possibly arrange to have the box office hold your tickets if you end up being late. Thanks!

wolfy999 07-04-2009 08:07 AM

What an enjoyable evening. Good food, good entertainment and good friends!
Even Wolfette seemed to have a good time (hard to tell on that one though). Looking forward to the next one!

Morrigoon 07-04-2009 12:38 PM

Yeah, Historic Main Street is really getting vibrant, isn't it? Very pleasant evening :)

alphabassettgrrl 07-06-2009 07:17 PM

Thank you for the suggestion and the organizing. This was fantastic!

Disneyphile 07-06-2009 07:42 PM

No problem!

Next up on their schedule is "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" in August. I'll post the dates for that one and see who wants to do it again. :)

wolfy999 08-21-2009 10:39 AM

I just bought tickets for "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" for tomorrow's (Saturday 08-22) matinee. Got them through Goldstar Events for $13.50 each. If anyone is interested, Hubby & I will be there. Going for a bite to eat after.

LSPoorEeyorick 08-21-2009 12:26 PM

I was lucky enough to see that in tryouts in Detroit before it hit NY. (And the show goes back a long way for me - it was the first musical I ever saw - my older brother played Linus. Thusly, it is the source of the theater bug that bit me so long ago.)

wolfy999 08-21-2009 12:47 PM

Any chance we might see you tomorrow?

LSPoorEeyorick 08-21-2009 03:15 PM

Alas, we will be at the cemetary screening. Have fun!

Disneyphile 08-21-2009 04:27 PM

Hmmm. That might be a good option for an outing with the in-laws.
