Is the purpose of these ridiculous outfits (not just these, but many most "high fashion" shows) to display clothing designers believe human beings will actually want to wear or is it really just art using a human body as their "canvas"?

What do you think? (You said "ridiculous" so I assume you think the latter. You would be correct. Perhaps you're holding out hope on finding one of these outfits at the mall? ;))

There is extreme, then there is "What planet are these people on?!"

A couple of those would cool and inovative as womenswear... Just not on men. Period. Others are, I'm quite sure, banned by several international treaties and the "crual and Unusual" clause of the US Constitution.

They're never meant to be anything but show pieces.

I would define the fashion as art using the human body as a blank canvas. I would define the blog making fun of them is comedic art using other art their not so blank canvas, but super funny none the less (but less appreciated by me for the "used" quality).

Putting it that way, it now makes sense to me, and I can appreciate it a bit more. Thanks! :)

I look at it in the same vein as concept cars. Part of it is pure art, part of it is taking things to extremes in order to flush out new ideas that can be incorporated into more practical fashion. But I find it pretty obvious that no one intends any of those to be sold at Nordstrom.

Actually... I'd wear this one, if I had the body for it.

Hee hee, no. I'm not looking to wear any of that... clothing. Though I'd love to "try on" some of those models. :evil:

For years I have rolled my eyes at this type of event and wondered what the designers were smoking when they thought people would buy and/or wear those monstrosities. Only recently did it dawn on me that it may just be art, rather than an actual attempt at marketing to customers. This thread made me think of my (potential) epiphany, thus, my question.

Being a fashion designer must be a great job. You get to be a complete and utter smart-ass, churn out stuff that has no bearing on what you're real job is, and, indeed, mocks your real job, and yet somehow have it redound to your credit and reflect positively on your ability to do your real job.

The other thing to keep in mind is there is usually a larger context of a design collection, in which the "extremes" are sometimes an exaggerated deconstruction of particular design elements. So art indeed, sometimes even making fun of or playing with design elements. There are ready to wear collections to address what might be salable - some might even take a toned down nod from one of these extreme collections.

But aside from that, the captions are hilarious.
