New Year's Eve 2009

What? Already?

Well, I just wanted to announce that we have a Theme.

Bwahaha.

Gemini Cricket 07-07-2009 05:46 PM

Bwahaha is the theme?

(I figured I post that before Kevy did.)
:D

BarTopDancer 07-07-2009 05:47 PM

So is there like a party or something? It's kinda short notice.

Should we start planning intricate details now?

Not Afraid 07-07-2009 05:47 PM

No, Bwahaha is the sound of me being evil.

I think multiple planning threads are necessary.

Chernabog 07-07-2009 05:55 PM

Oh God, please let it not be an evil clown theme.

Gemini Cricket 07-07-2009 06:03 PM

I hope the theme is: Come Dressed as Your Favorite Golden Girl.

Chernabog 07-07-2009 06:06 PM

Oh sweet zombie jesus I just had an image of GC dressed as Bea Arthur. Make it stop!

Morrigoon 07-07-2009 06:08 PM

Should we start sequining gloves now?

Not Afraid 07-07-2009 06:09 PM

40 Michael Jacksons in our house may just be too much for me.

Gemini Cricket 07-07-2009 06:38 PM

Friends of mine in Boston do a zombie march through Davis Square once or twice a year (often nowhere near Halloween). It was great fun seeing them do that. Everyone dressed up like some zombie celeb. It was awesome.
Zombie party at NA's for NYE!
:D

innerSpaceman 07-07-2009 06:48 PM

And therein lies the danger. If the theme isn't officially annouced soon, an official one might take hold in the public imagination.

(And when I first saw this thread, I wondered what made Gemini Cricket revive this old thing.)

Strangler Lewis 07-07-2009 08:06 PM

Pedant Alert: The title of this thread should be changed from 2009 to 2010.

Alex 07-07-2009 08:19 PM

I've created the wiki and you should all go and select your preferred arrival window (offers in 5 minutes slots) by this weekend otherwise one will be selected for you.

Chernabog 07-07-2009 08:20 PM

Hang on, does this mean we'll see Brad again later this year??!?!?

Cadaverous Pallor 07-07-2009 08:50 PM

I eagerly await the announcement of the theme.

My photoshop skills are at your service. *cracks knuckles*

Not Afraid 07-07-2009 08:56 PM

Oh, you want to know what the theme is?

Here's a pictorial hint:

Alex 07-07-2009 09:04 PM

5-button Vests! Best theme ever!

Would you spend NYE at the Sleepover Speakeasy?

Cadaverous Pallor 07-07-2009 09:23 PM

We making moonshine in the bathtub?

Nothing more fun than the Great Depression! :D

JWBear 07-07-2009 09:28 PM

We might!

And, how appropriate to "celebrate" the Depression now, eh?

Prohibition ran from 1919-1933 (the ENTIRE 20's were dry). There was a very strong Temperance Movement before and during. Most speakeasies were run by the Mob. The music was all about Jazz and Blues. Because alcohol was harder to come by, stronger spirits were made so you could get drunk faster. AA started in 1935 ;). Black Friday was October 29th, 1929 and the start of the Great Depression.

Quote:

The Great Depression began in October 1929, when the stock market in the United States dropped rapidly. Thousands of investors lost large sums of money and many were wiped out, lost everything. The 'crash' led us into the Great Depression. The ensuing period ranked as the longest and worst period of high unemployment and low business activity in modern times. Banks, stores, and factories were closed and left millions of Americans jobless, homeless, and penniless. Many people came to depend on the government or charity to provide them with food.
There is LOTS to draw from and I think our house could become a nice little speakeasy. Besides, it was built in 1927.

JWBear 07-07-2009 09:49 PM

"Ma" Cone's Speakeasy! ;)

It's about time I got my own event! ;)

Speakeasies wern't dry. Not by a long shot.

Oh, and didn't we have the same discussion about 2009 vs 2010 last year (only it was 2008/09).

Yes, it's the Eve of 2010 but the party takes place in 2009. Maybe if I said New Year's Eve party, December 31, 2009. But that's too long.

Morrigoon 07-07-2009 10:23 PM

OMG, this is FAAAAABULOUS! (and the traditional feathered NYE tiaras are so very appropriate to the era as well)

We won't be in town, but we're reserving the exclusive use of the ConeMeinke Skype facilities so we don't keep dropping out and miss the countdown like we did last/this year.

Yeah, I was explaining the Chris tonight that, not only was it illegal to make Moonshine but it was also illegal to steal things from a refinery. CJ, please keep my husband out of jail.

I think if Chris gets arrested it's going to be for dropping trou in the middle of the street... But that would just add some more excitement to the evening! ;)

Especially with bottles labeled "moonshine" in the house.

Gemini Cricket 07-09-2009 05:29 PM

I think Eddie and Roger hid in a "Hooch Parlor" in Roger Rabbit.
And there was a "Juke Joint" in The Color Purple... not sure if it's the same thing...

Hehe Sadly, the same could be said for me ;)

I think I can still play The Entertainer too - and the Maple Leaf Rag - and may Fur Elise. After that, I got nothing.

Ghoulish Delight 07-13-2009 04:34 PM

I'm down to the Entertainer and the intro to the Pink Panther theme.

LSPoorEeyorick 07-13-2009 04:41 PM

Alas, this is another year we'll not be in Southern CA for New Year's. But what a delightful theme - can't wait to see pictures!

JWBear 07-13-2009 04:56 PM

The only thing I can play is the All In the Family theme.

Scrooge McSam 07-13-2009 05:44 PM

I'm the only one with the Peanuts' theme?

Sad... just, sad

JW... I always wanted to learn All In The Family's closing theme

Prudence 07-13-2009 05:59 PM

I'm working on a bunch of ragtime tunes, but my hands are too small to master a number of them - like the Entertainer. Swipsie I'm fairly decent with - at least the first half.

No special attire for us this year - too busy with numerous things to even worry about it.

And, our NYE celebrating is likely to be fairly light this year - only staying for a few hours. Our social calendar is chock full right now, and we're also wanting time with just each other. :)

Not Afraid 12-28-2009 04:31 PM

OK, folks. If you a)haven't RSVP'd for this year or b) didn't even get your evite (heaven forbid) please a) do so or b) let me know ASAP.

Is there going to be a dedicated skype line? I can call in with video (which may be horrifying for those viewing me).

No matter how I sliced and diced, it's not in the cards for a trip on such short notice. I stupidly did not pay attention to this thread and missed my invite until the one sent to my current and active email the other day (sorry NA).

Yuk. We were on the fence until last night, when I awoke in agony from my friggin' kidney stone. Luckily, my urologist returned my 1 a.m. phone call, and I didn't have to go into the hospital (just one vicodin and four hours crouching on the bathroom floor). Pain's gone, but I'm totally wiped - and the stone still hasn't passed. So we'll sadly have to pass. Have a wonderful party and a fantastic New Year celebration, everyone!

I've heard of getting stoned on New Year's, but that is not the way to do it.

Question - How the heck did the guys end up in the middle of the street with their pants around their ankles? Has to be a great story there.

That I can answer in one word.... (but I won't, so here's a link)

For those of you on FB, I posted a couple videos. If you can't see it, msg me and I'll add you to the group I created (since I figured some folks might not want all the world seeing them)

For those of you that saw the endless ads for Life Unexpected during the Rose Parade: If you look up the actor's ages, the "mom" and "dad" would have been 12 and 13 when they had their daughter....not impossible, but not likely either, though if you go by the age of the daughter character (19 in real life, 15 on the show) then they would have been 16 and 17.

In any case - the casting doesn't do the show any favors.

Well that was fun.

wolfy999 01-02-2010 07:42 AM

Thanks Goonie, I understand completely now!

Well, first load of dishes are in, been snacking on leftovers for breakfast - no I didn't have any meatballs - I'm also leaving the gin and champagne alone for now. I like these kind of celebrations that end just as the weekend begins. Cheers & Happy 2010 everybody.

Thanks to Chris and Lisa for being fabulous hosts as always.

Now I'm trying to recover from staying up until 4:00 AM New Year's Eve (New Year's Day by then I suppose). There was a time when staying up really late was no problem but it's been a while.

My thanks to our lovely hosts NA and €M, I had a wonderful evening.

And to the poor folks who had to endure the KB/SM Snore Chorus, my apologies.

Things I learned at this year's festivities:

1) Feather boas shed. A lot.
2) I can fit an astounding number of faux pearls in my cleavage.

It was a blast, as always.

Looks like everyone had a blast as always! Sorry we missed it!

Cadaverous Pallor 01-05-2010 10:39 PM

Need I say that I had a blast? :D

It was weird sleeping at home and coming back for bacon but wearing PJs made my ruse convincing enough.

The speakeasy was teh swank! Thanks, NA and €, your home is such a lovely place to observe our special NYE traditions. Bacon candy, birthday cake, pants-drop, Andres, etc. Twenty, twenty, twenty-four years ago, I would've been sedated. It's always nice to be awake for these things!

Gn2Dlnd 01-06-2010 01:07 AM

(Among the things I missed: Flaming Joe, Steve and Isaac's traditional late Grand Entrance, Australians on skype, Love Brownies - mebbe next year!)

lashbear 01-06-2010 09:25 PM

We missed the Australians On Skype too :o(
