New Year's Eve 2009
What? Already?
Well, I just wanted to announce that we have a Theme. Bwahaha. |
Bwahaha is the theme?
(I figured I post that before Kevy did.) :D |
So is there like a party or something? It's kinda short notice.
Should we start planning intricate details now? |
No, Bwahaha is the sound of me being evil.
Quote:
Oh God, please let it not be an evil clown theme.
I hope the theme is: Come Dressed as Your Favorite Golden Girl.
Oh sweet zombie jesus I just had an image of GC dressed as Bea Arthur. Make it stop!
Quote:
Should we start sequining gloves now?
40 Michael Jacksons in our house may just be too much for me.

We wait with bated breath....

Friends of mine in Boston do a zombie march through Davis Square once or twice a year (often nowhere near Halloween). It was great fun seeing them do that. Everyone dressed up like some zombie celeb. It was awesome.
Zombie party at NA's for NYE! :D |
And therein lies the danger. If the theme isn't officially annouced soon, an official one might take hold in the public imagination.
(And when I first saw this thread, I wondered what made Gemini Cricket revive this old thing.) |
Pedant Alert: The title of this thread should be changed from 2009 to 2010.

I've created the wiki and you should all go and select your preferred arrival window (offers in 5 minutes slots) by this weekend otherwise one will be selected for you.
Hang on, does this mean we'll see Brad again later this year??!?!?
I eagerly await the announcement of the theme.
My photoshop skills are at your service. *cracks knuckles* |
Oh, you want to know what the theme is?
Here's a pictorial hint: ![]() |
5-button Vests! Best theme ever!
1920's? Prohibition? Speakeasy?
Quote:
Would you spend NYE at the Sleepover Speakeasy? |
We making moonshine in the bathtub?
Nothing more fun than the Great Depression! :D |
Oooo.... Cool. This is gonna be fun!
Quote:
And, how appropriate to "celebrate" the Depression now, eh? Prohibition ran from 1919-1933 (the ENTIRE 20's were dry). There was a very strong Temperance Movement before and during. Most speakeasies were run by the Mob. The music was all about Jazz and Blues. Because alcohol was harder to come by, stronger spirits were made so you could get drunk faster. AA started in 1935 ;). Black Friday was October 29th, 1929 and the start of the Great Depression. Quote:

"Ma" Cone's Speakeasy! ;)

_________________ Am I the only one having a hard time picturing a dry NYE? At Chris's house?!? |
I think the theme sounds amazing!
Quote:
Speakeasies wern't dry. Not by a long shot. Oh, and didn't we have the same discussion about 2009 vs 2010 last year (only it was 2008/09). Yes, it's the Eve of 2010 but the party takes place in 2009. Maybe if I said New Year's Eve party, December 31, 2009. But that's too long. |
OMG, this is FAAAAABULOUS! (and the traditional feathered NYE tiaras are so very appropriate to the era as well)

We won't be in town, but we're reserving the exclusive use of the ConeMeinke Skype facilities so we don't keep dropping out and miss the countdown like we did last/this year.
Sorry, first in, best bandwidth and all that. So there. Oh, and I LOVE all that music. |

J sez: "We should go..."

might even have a few mason jars back there |
Quote:

Yeah, I was explaining the Chris tonight that, not only was it illegal to make Moonshine but it was also illegal to steal things from a refinery. CJ, please keep my husband out of jail.

Especially with bottles labeled "moonshine" in the house.
I put the Moon in Moonshine
OMG!
Mmmm.... perhaps we'd be safer with bathtub gin ;)
Bathtub cheese.
So what were some good movies that had scenes with speakeasies?

I think Eddie and Roger hid in a "Hooch Parlor" in Roger Rabbit.
And there was a "Juke Joint" in The Color Purple... not sure if it's the same thing... |
Charleston and flappers. It's the bee's knees!:snap:
While it didn't have a speakeasy, The Sting would still fit the theme.

Didn't Capone's places also feature gambling? |
Quote:
Hehe Sadly, the same could be said for me ;)
I think I can still play The Entertainer too - and the Maple Leaf Rag - and may Fur Elise. After that, I got nothing.
I'm down to the Entertainer and the intro to the Pink Panther theme.
Alas, this is another year we'll not be in Southern CA for New Year's. But what a delightful theme - can't wait to see pictures!
The only thing I can play is the All In the Family theme.
I'm the only one with the Peanuts' theme?
Sad... just, sad JW... I always wanted to learn All In The Family's closing theme |
I'm working on a bunch of ragtime tunes, but my hands are too small to master a number of them - like the Entertainer. Swipsie I'm fairly decent with - at least the first half.

So, is anyone else beginning manic outfit preparations? Just me?

First, I need to do manic invite preparations.

No special attire for us this year - too busy with numerous things to even worry about it.
And, our NYE celebrating is likely to be fairly light this year - only staying for a few hours. Our social calendar is chock full right now, and we're also wanting time with just each other. :) |
OK, folks. If you a)haven't RSVP'd for this year or b) didn't even get your evite (heaven forbid) please a) do so or b) let me know ASAP.
Did not get evite, but planning to attend.
I'm on kidlet patrol so I can't make it :( My cheese is very sad.
Bring her! We can get her drunk! ;)
Oops! Responded now.
What's she got in common with a jockey?

Have fun, everybody! I think we're staying close to home. Not sure what we'll do.
Have fun! I'll be working too damned much this week- It's only Monday and I'm already having issues with my sleep cycle.
My niece found this site that offers free "rooms" to webcam in - twould be cool instead of having to switch around, that everyone can be in one room!
www.stickam.com BUT - there is a delay and sometimes feedback/ echo's so beware! Min and I will be at DL rockin' in the new year!! |
Should I make my chili again? I enjoy making it (and eating it), but don't know if others want.
Also. will be bringing the mondo grill for the bacon orgy. It cooks a pound at a time. |
So, I ended up with an outfit that will be fun, and didn't take me any time at all. :) Can't wait!
My mom needs me, so I am bowing out.
I'm on Medical Leave from Disney till Jan 11th at the least, so I'm free on NYE, but don't think I'm up for it. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.
Did I mention...I hate pain! |
I'll raise a toast to all of you from the Bitter East Coast when we reach the witching hour.
By the time you all reach midnight I'll be fast asleep, dreaming of a prosperous new year for everyone filled with good jobs, happy unions, healthy bundles and of course copious amounts of crisp bacon. |
Quote:
You're coming dressed as Donkey Kong?!? How does that fit in the theme?
No, more like the Canary or the Yellow Peril.
Quote:
Yay for rockin' the NYE at DL! Weeeeeeee :) |
Is there going to be a dedicated skype line? I can call in with video (which may be horrifying for those viewing me).
No matter how I sliced and diced, it's not in the cards for a trip on such short notice. I stupidly did not pay attention to this thread and missed my invite until the one sent to my current and active email the other day (sorry NA). Sounds like a jazzy evening and please do post pics of the speakeasy, will it be called Thurston's? And what is the password to gain entry? I'll raise a glass remotely. |

Ken's just recovering from being sick and now I'm sick. Hope I can shake this by tomorrow night. I'm taking it easy today, so hopefully, I'll be fine.
Yeah I've been sick since last week, went to the doctor on Monday (who put me on antibiotics), and I'm still not any better. Missed the last three days of work. Hopefully will be feeling better tomorrow!!!
Spent too much time on the Rat's smoking jacket - didn't make a dress for myself. :(

Yuk. We were on the fence until last night, when I awoke in agony from my friggin' kidney stone. Luckily, my urologist returned my 1 a.m. phone call, and I didn't have to go into the hospital (just one vicodin and four hours crouching on the bathroom floor). Pain's gone, but I'm totally wiped - and the stone still hasn't passed. So we'll sadly have to pass. Have a wonderful party and a fantastic New Year celebration, everyone!
Jesse!!!! That stone needs to come out! Make that your body's New Year's resolution.
We'll miss you and H. If you change your mind, come on down. Pru, don't worry. It will be fine if you're naked. ;) I have some extra long strands of pearls if you need to borrow them. |
I'm bowing out also....Just not up for it. Pain is not lessening much, so best to stick around home.
Diane, what happened????
Torn ligaments in my shoulder...On Medical Leave from Disney till at least the 11th, but Doc said could take a couple of months to heal. Not sure how I did it.....possibly lifting benches in the Hub before/after fireworks, but Doc says could have been anything.
Ack - feel better everyone!
Quote:
Dang, forgot that part!
Bah. Went to do a fitting of the dress, since I had time to whip it together, and it was super unflattering. So, I guess I'm going in pearls, headband, and a feather boa. NA said I could come naked, so you've all been appropriately warned.
Quote:
Jesse, I've been down that painful road several times, and so, very sorry. Yowch. For that matter, Wolfy and all others, I'm declaring pain officially banished ! |
I just remembered to start up the ole' Skype machine.
Quelle soiree! What a lovely party! Sorry we couldn't stay longer.
Happy New Year, everyone!
Sorry I could not skype in, I don't know the password/code!
Happy New Year everyone! I'm sure it was a swanky affair! |
I only can see one pic....lovely pic of the two of you though!
Oops. Try This.
Awwwwwww love the pics. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it this year. Missed this entire week of work to rest up, and I'm still sick. Glad everyone had a smashing time :) :)
That works much better!
Looks like everyone had a blast! Question - How the heck did the guys end up in the middle of the street with their pants around their ankles? Has to be a great story there. |
Everybody looks so great! Love it!
Bravo! Everyone looks festive and NA, you look gorgeous!

For those of you on FB, I posted a couple videos. If you can't see it, msg me and I'll add you to the group I created (since I figured some folks might not want all the world seeing them)
Awesome pics, y'all!
:) |
awww great pix. Missed you all.
For those of you that saw the endless ads for Life Unexpected during the Rose Parade: If you look up the actor's ages, the "mom" and "dad" would have been 12 and 13 when they had their daughter....not impossible, but not likely either, though if you go by the age of the daughter character (19 in real life, 15 on the show) then they would have been 16 and 17.
In any case - the casting doesn't do the show any favors. |
Well that was fun.
Thanks Goonie, I understand completely now!
Well, first load of dishes are in, been snacking on leftovers for breakfast - no I didn't have any meatballs - I'm also leaving the gin and champagne alone for now. I like these kind of celebrations that end just as the weekend begins. Cheers & Happy 2010 everybody.
Thanks to Chris and Lisa for being fabulous hosts as always.
Now I'm trying to recover from staying up until 4:00 AM New Year's Eve (New Year's Day by then I suppose). There was a time when staying up really late was no problem but it's been a while. |
My thanks to our lovely hosts NA and €M, I had a wonderful evening.
And to the poor folks who had to endure the KB/SM Snore Chorus, my apologies. |
Things I learned at this year's festivities:
1) Feather boas shed. A lot. 2) I can fit an astounding number of faux pearls in my cleavage. It was a blast, as always. |
Looks like everyone had a blast as always! Sorry we missed it!
Need I say that I had a blast? :D
It was weird sleeping at home and coming back for bacon but wearing PJs made my ruse convincing enough. |
The speakeasy was teh swank! Thanks, NA and €, your home is such a lovely place to observe our special NYE traditions. Bacon candy, birthday cake, pants-drop, Andres, etc. Twenty, twenty, twenty-four years ago, I would've been sedated. It's always nice to be awake for these things!
(Among the things I missed: Flaming Joe, Steve and Isaac's traditional late Grand Entrance, Australians on skype, Love Brownies - mebbe next year!)
We missed the Australians On Skype too :o(
