The Lost Symbol

Dan Brown's new novel "The Lost Symbol" came out yesterday. I expect I'll pick up a copy today.

I've heard that this one takes place around D.C. Which should make it fun for me, I suppose we can look forward to a slew of "Lost Symbol" tours soon.

If I can find the time I might try to read parts of the book while visiting the actual locations.....

It could be fun. I'll wait for a few reviews before I plunge. I hope it's preposterous but entertaining, like Angels and Demons, rather than preposterous, self-important and maddeningly dumb, like DaVinci Code.

Darn it - I knew there was something I was supposed to be doing on my way home yesterday. Forgot to stop and pick up a copy.

I enjoyed his other books a lot. I loved the tie in of history and adventure, fiction or not.

How am I supposed to finish re-reading Angels and Demons before I see the movie when he is writing new books that I now have to read?

Personally, I like to have some time between when I read a book and see the movie. A year or so is good. It gives me time for forget most of the books details so I don't wig out at every little variation in the film.

So my recommendation would be skip the re-read until after you have seen the film and jump right into the new novel.

Slate has an interactive Dan Brown plot generator.

I still have to read Angels and Demons and it'll probably be a while before I get to Lost Symbol. While I don't believe it has much of a foot in reality, it's a fun premise and I love the talk about symbols! Plus the puzzles can be fun.

Oh yeah, this is gonna be fun.

In Chapter-3 there is a phone number. If you call the number (a 202 area code) you get the voice mail for the character in the book.

Haha. I'm at about chapter 5 and I wanted to try the number as I noticed it was a real looking number not a 555.

You weaken my willpower.

I came home last night to find the book had been purchased for me. :)

I recall the Da Vinci Code had some sort of phone number/website/email thing that gave you a puzzle to solve as you played along

As did the dust jacket of the book, which I'd say has been repeated on the cover of the new book.

40% off cover price at Ralphs Grocery stores here in the OC area.

Ha! Reading Chap-47 now and I know were this is story is heading, thanks to my Grandfather. The Structural Engineer and Mason. ;)

Moonliner 09-24-2009 02:17 PM

I finished the book yesterday, so.....

SPOILER ALERT

If you continue reading past this post you are exposing yourself to potential spoilers.

Moonliner 09-24-2009 02:28 PM

OK, so on with the show, using spoiler tags for now just in case.....

Spoiler:
My overall impression, the book was too much like the The Da Vinci Code. Same basic plot, same basic bad guy, same supposed "earth shattering" revelations about religion.

Perhaps it's because I live here and know the area, but I was pretty much ahead of him most of the way. Still it was fun to follow along using the Internet/Google/Google Earth/etc... Did anyone not see the truth about the villain from the get go? Or not figure out where the end of the trail would lead?

katiesue 09-24-2009 03:25 PM

Moonie I agree with you on all points.

Spoiler:
From the first time they gave an info on the villian I knew who it was. I kept hoping there would be some sort of twist and it would end up being someone else. That never happend so I was kind of disapointed. And yea pretty much DaVinci Code in a different setting. It was kind of like eating cotton candy - melts in your mouth but not very satisfying after.

Strangler Lewis 10-15-2009 11:41 AM

Look out world!

Could see the
Spoiler:
villain
a mile away.

Could see the
Spoiler:
final location
a mile away.

However, I thought that the
Spoiler:
lost word/lost symbol
would turn out to be
Spoiler:
Jesus's body.

By the way, did I miss something or just not understand how
Spoiler:
Mal'akh apparently thought he had drowned Langdon in the same underwater breathing sensory deprivation thingy he was torturing Peter Solomon in?

Betty 10-15-2009 01:02 PM

I didn't see the villian coming. You guys must all be smarter then me.

In a way it very much goes with what I've felt - there are power in thoughts. I don't believe in God yet I do believe in the power of prayer.

I'm curious as to how much is fact vs. fiction. Obviously the main story is fiction - I'm talking about the various historical and scientific things mentioned.
