Ju Koon Soon???
Hey Everybody,
That fantastic LoT-inspired Holiday, Ju Koon, is Coming Up SOON! Loosely adapted from the Jewish High Holiday of Yom Kippur, Ju Koon has evolved into its own celebration .... and I'm wondering what folks would like to do this year to commemorate this awesome event. Ju Koon happens on, and includes, Yom Kippur - this year, that's starting at sundown on Sunday, September 27th. So anything that goes past sunset is legit. The central event is Casting Away Your Crud into the Ocean. Bits of bread or bread-like voodoo dolls or locks of hair or anything symbolic you'd like to load with the energy of things in your life you'd like to get rid of or change are taken into the sea and cast upon the waves in an age-old tradition of renewal and repentance. Last Year, we added a whirlwind Lost-Tour of Palos Verdes which culminated at Point Fermin (or is that Vermin) Park for the annual Raccoon Rally. I'm pretty sure we'll want to include this as well ... or, apparently, we can hold this part of the festivities in €uroMeinke and Not Afraid's attic!! Then ... the idea is to (hopefully) come up with a new element for the expanding traditions. Often that's something we'd come up with spur of the moment (or not) ... but if anyone's got any great ideas, post 'em here! And we need to pick a time and a place and get things rolling for Ju Koon 2009. It's Soon!! :snap: |
I shall check my calendar .... FYI the event is based off of Tashlich, which is a ritual during Rosh Hashana, not Yom Kippur :)

I have wood

My wood is occupying half the backyard... he could hardly miss it ;) In fact, he has to walk past my wood every day. Just sitting there, leaning against the fence, a monument to happiness. Any visitor to my back yard would be instantly struck by the sight of my wood.
Quote that... if you dare! :P |
How many people can we fit into my car?

Keith and I discovered that you can fit 7 people into an old body style Corolla though, so I think more than 7 will fit in your car. |
If we piled people into the back of the wagon, we could make a party out of it. But, do people REALLY want to be in my car, un-belted, while I drive?
|
As long as we cruise a parking garage currently under construction ... then YES! :D

This ain't Fargo, baby.

I dunno, we need a new tradition this year. :D
(I was just telling SuPeR K! that, 20 years from now, I want Ju Koon to be so full of 20 required traditions that we have to start at one sundown and just GO until the next sundown, staying awake with sugar and cocaine if necessary.) |
Whatever is done, it must involve our Korean dog, Kimchi.
|
Um, er, bad things may come to mind when you suggest that something be involved and then use the words "Korean" and "Dog."
 |
Hey, we saved her from that fate once......
|
I have so very many things I'd love to cast into the waters, but alas we're not good at late night goings-on Sunday evenings.
Plus, I'd probably cry, and no one needs to see that. |
Yeah, Pru, but this group wouldn't exactly hold it against you.

Ju know, this is a year I could use some good crudcasting. I may get my Sunday night thing covered so I can attend.
|
Looks like I won't be free till after 1030, so I'll have to miss out :( Someone toss their cookies at the ocean for me, k?
|
What time does the ocean part actually happen?
|
In prior years I think it was around sunset?
Sunday nights are tough for us too...and we've got other stuff happening that weekend as well...but we'll see. |

Talking to the husband about this.

Ok, everyone, time to Pick a Beach!
If we pick one along Palos Verdes, we'll be closer to the Koon part of the festivities, but parking is more difficult, and it's a walk down and back up to the beautifully secluded bay beaches at the bottom of the cliffs. For the Ju segment of the celebration, bigger and more Jehovah-like waves can usually be found at the more "standard" beaches, with easier parking (generally) -- either in Long Beach or the South Bay, both within easy driving distance of the Koon park. |
Wish I could be there.
|
I vote for Torrance beach. Nice view of PVE, lots of parking.
|

Is this taking place on the 27th? |
Yes, the 27th.
I like Pru's choice ... but, um, don't you have to be attending to cast a vote? (Hint, that means you should attend, Pru) |
Quote:
|
I'll attend if it's at my favorite beach. :P
Seriously - it's more of a locals beach, so there are fewer trend-setters about. Which is either good or bad, depending on your perspective. |
I work until 6:30 in DTLA but I'm free after that.
|
I have a hockey game...
Not 110% sure I am going yet (it's still pre-season). |
With the new commute schedule for Tom, we're in bed by 10. But if we can do the first, Ju part of Ju Koon early enough, I really need a big unlit ocean in my life right now.
|
First segment's at sunset. Sunset on Sunday's at 6:43 pm. Plenty of time to get to bed by 10. And I daresay you could do raccoon park, too.
 |

Yes, he takes the Amtrak. He has to be at work by 7.
|
Wish I could be there...I've got loads of crud I could throw in the ocean, I'm not sure one bread doll would hold it all...maybe a bread elephant.
|
So, hearing no objections ... shall we say Torrance Beach?
Anyone familiar enough with the place to suggest a reasonable meeting / looking for each other place? |
Do you have to wear pants at this beach?
|
Quote:

There should not be flogging. The only info I found on that tradition was from the same site I found it on at the beach.

I'm so excited for JuKoon!!! See you all there :)
|
I am a native Southern Californian and I have never heard of Torrance Beach.
Can someone pick up Chris and I will meet everyone there after I get off work? |
Yeah, Pru's right about Torrance Beach ... it's not one of the "glamor" beaches of the South Bay, like Manhattan or Redondo. Maybe it's too close to PV to get good waves. But the views of PV are really sweet, and it's a relatively uncrowded beach compared to those two I just mentioned.
Its proximity to Palos Verdes makes it an excellent jumping-off point for Part 2 of the festivities --- the Coon Hunt!!* * we don't hunt them, they hunt us! |
Anyone care to toss some cookies into the sea on my behalf?
[bad juju here] thanks! |
I've come down with a nasty head cold that keeps recurring, so now I'm slowing down a bit and letting it run its course. If it's done by Sunday, we hope to make it.
|
If there's no other takers who are more on-the-way, I'll gladly give Chris a ride.
|
I'm feeling all native-y now since I know of a beach that is unknown to most. Mwahahahaha! Google Maps does a decent job of directing one to the proper location. There's a pay parking lot and it's in the middle of a neighborhood, so often free street parking.
|
I was going to post this elsewhere, but it's more to me about Ju Koon than anything else. It's a bit revolting, so I'm spoiler-tagging it for anyone who might want to avoid a potential JuKoon-ish buzz kill.
Spoiler:
 |
In happier news, let's get down to Brass Tacks!
Ok, Torrance Beach, which is here. Let's say towards the northern end (I have no idea where this pay parking lot is). Seems the street along the shoreline is Paseo de la Playa, and we'll aim roughly between Via Riviera on the south and Mirimar Park on the north. I'm aiming to get there around 5 - 5:30ish and I'll try to post here a more precise location. I'll bring some snacks and some bread for tossin.' If anyone else is inclined to bring along some snacks and drinks, I'm sure that would be swell. And if you'd like to toss anything more elaborate - bread voo-doos or bread elephants or bread raccoons - you must supply those yourself. - - Chris, the only proviso about me giving you a ride is that I want to get there by 5:30ish to scout a good spot and enjoy the gloaming and the sunset. Is that cool by you for Ju? |

I'm working so everyone have a great time and throw some bad vibes into the sea for me!!
|
Chris just texted me about this. Definitely interested depending on how work and the weekend plays out.
|
So is the plan to meet at Torrance Beach at Sunset? Before then? Are we going to make fire?
|
I'm still really sick, so no Ju Koon for us this year. :(
Have fun everyone! Can't wait to see the pics! |
The fact that the carpet in our bedroom is wet and it appears that a water pipe has apparently sprung a leak in the foundation in there, I think we we have other plans today.
|
I have a 5pm game and I am battling my yearly allergic reaction to the end of September, so I think I will be a no-go as well.
|
Oh, no!!! Boo for bad things.
If I feel human in two hours, we'll be there. I want to come this year. |
I don't think fire is legal, but if you bring something to burn ...
|
Sorry kids, but we're staying in this evening. Have fun!
|
We will be arriving shortly. Gees, it's hazy. Hazy? Smoky? What is with the sky?
|
On the foggy beach, just south of Miramar Park, between the two tile roof buildings, but much closer to the bigger one with American Flag - and next to a lifeguard tower. We won't know when the sun sets, so there's plenty of time to join us.
|
Hope you had a good throwing of the bad mojo!

Sheriff Describes Raccoon "Gang Attack" On Woman link
Had to read it to make sure she wasn't a tousled redhead. |
Nu Koon News: Apparently "Gang Attacked" is a euphemism for "Killed." linky
The article appears under the semi-humorous category banner of: L.A. Unleashed All things animal in Southern California and beyond I suspect "killed" is actually a euphemism for "badly proofread." |
Happy Ju Koon Grandma!

Why there weren't so many coons this year
I think I know why there weren't so many coons this year:

I wonder if they chartered it.
