Raw Food diet

Has anyone eaten at 118 Degrees restaurant in Costa Mesa yet?

I have read a lot about Raw Food Diets being able to reverse Diabetes and do all sorts of amazing things, and so, while I don't intend to go ALL raw (not for a long time, I expect) I am now aiming at a minimum 80% raw diet if I can.

I have discovered so many yummy raw dishes that it's becoming decidedly easier to achieve. No Raw Corndog recipes yet, but you never know....:D

Anyhow, my favourite raw recipe for now is Jennifer Cornbleet's Garden Vegetable Soup - it's incredibly creamy and green and it's currently my #1 Fave.

Wot's In It?
1/2 zucchini
1/2 ripe tomato
1/2 celery stalk
1/2 cup chopped spinach
3 fresh basil leaves
1/2 spring onion
1/2 clove garlic
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoons Shiro (white) Miso
Dash of cayenne
Dash of Salt
1/2 an avocado
3/4 cup water

Blend all together. I like to warm it gently to about 40°c (118°F - which is where the restaurant got it's name.)

Soooo... tell us about YOUR Raw experiences.

Thurston and Kimchi are on a raw food diet and they do wonderfully on it.

I'm always up for some sushi or Beefsteak Tartar

Vegetables in their raw and crunchy state are difficult for me to bite into, and I find them tedious to chew on. Stick ém in a juicer and I'm a happy guy.

Good luck! I hope it helps you.

I have not tried 118, mostly because any time I start seeing anyone making such miraculous claims (likie, "It cures diabetes") about a diet, my reaction is to avoid it. I'm sure there are some benefits to it, obviously anything that adds veggies instead of fats is going to have some benefits. But I'd be very skeptical of any claim that seems too good to be true.

Because there is an increased chance of food bourne pathogens in our food supply, I think of it as equal to a good old fashioned game of Russian Roulette (which is much more exciting than vomitting  !). That said, yes I do feel that adding raw foods to the diet can be of help. There are enzymes that are important to get in raw veggies. I like to grow my own (without using animal crap in the soil, where ecoli can get into them). Juicing is one good way.

I also have 3 Aero Gardens to grow some indoors with hydrophonics and no soil. It's supper clean, and being home grown there is very little chance of the type of contamination that food processors could easily add. Though, don't expect to save any money, as it is very pricey per pound even after the machine is paid for. The taste and convienance is worth it for me. I love having home grown tomatos and Basil in the dead of winter!

Another thing to think about are the benifits of adding things like EVOO cold to maintain the benifits omega fatty acids, and adding fresh herbs at the end of a cooked dish to keep the vitamins and minerals of them intact (although they are only a small portion of the diet-every little bit helps).

As with any diet, moderation is key. If a person would cut the fried food they eat in half, and sub it with raw food, the impact would be quite synergistic! So sub out those fries for a salad, and you could be well on your way to being much healthier!

I try to consume most of my veggies raw, and I eat about 4-5 cups of those per day on most weeks. They've greatly increased my energy levels, have helped clear my skin, and my digestive system seems a lot happier too. :)
