In Praise of Mexican Coke

It all started in 1985 when — in an effort to save money — Coca-Cola stopped using real cane sugar and reformulated the iconic drink to be made with high-fructose corn syrup. The U.S. government subsidizes corn growers so much (some $40 billion since the mid 90s) that HFCS is cheaper than sugar, and when you are producing on the scale that Coke is material costs are crucial to the bottom line. What does this have to do with Mexican Coke you ask? Well, the bottlers south of the border never made the switch to HFCS, so people (like myself) feel that Mexican Coke has a better taste than American Coke. I think the Coca-Cola made with real sugar is less sweet tasting and has a smoother finish than HFCS Coke and thus is superior.

Want real Coke!

I agree. Coke with real sugar is better.

So happy that my local Costco carries the stuff.

So sad that I've been off caffeine for 11 days... argh.

I gotta say, I'm a huge fan of Dublin Dr. Pepper and I'm bordering on obsessive with my love for Boylan Bottling Companies Root Beer. Both of which are made with pure cane sugar.

After hearing so much about Mexican coke, I was ecstatic to finally run across the genuine article (You can find it at USH citywalk). After tasting it, I think I'd rather drink new coke. It had a weird after taste that I could not quite place but I'd describe as a bitter clove taste. Definitely off putting for me.

Personally I can't taste the difference between HFCS and cane sugar Coke. But at least around here, if you can, it is easy enough to get Mexican Coke year round.

Though I have been tempted to arrange a blind taste test and see if people really can taste the difference as much as they say (not that I particularly doubt it, just curious).

I had no idea about Mexican Coke until I had one at mousepod's house. I liked it a lot.

Definitely a fan. Too bad Costco is fighting with Coke right now, so they aren't carrying it.

Oh, yeah, Mexican Coke is the best. I guess it doesn't matter much, since I'm working to give up soda entirely, but the corn syrup definitely is inferior.

I am not sure I've ever had a Mexican Coke but I don't remember the last time I actually had a Coke or any sort.
