Word of the day...

I learned a new word today! "Gadarene"

Morrigoon 03-26-2010 01:11 AM

You gonna share with the class or do we have to resort to dictionary.com?

Kevy Baby 03-26-2010 07:57 AM

[adolescent mode] The word of the day is "legs" - help spread the word [/adolescent mode]

Mousey Girl 03-26-2010 08:41 AM

Legs? I was expecting you to say boobs.

Ghoulish Delight 03-26-2010 08:44 AM

Spreading "boobs" isn't as acquiescently funny as spreading "legs".

JWBear 03-26-2010 08:54 AM

This thread became about boobs in four posts. Is that a new record for LoT?

Gada·rene (gad′ə rēn′)

adjective
moving rapidly and without control; headlong

Etymology: after the Gadarene swine (Luke 8:26-39) that ran into the sea after demons possessed them

Maybe my favorite word -

Callipygian: Having a shapely buttocks, as in "I wish I was a more callipygian dude."

I used to feel sorry for those poor Gadarene pigs, who never asked to have Jesus send demons into them and make them run into the sea.

It's weird because Dictionary.com doesn't have a definition, they only give this:

Quote:

Gad·a·ra (gād'ər-ə)
An ancient city of Palestine southeast of the Sea of Galilee. It was one of the Greek cities of the Decapolis.

Gad'a·rene' (gād'ə-rēn', gād'ə-rēn') adj. & n.

Ghoulish Delight 03-26-2010 09:44 AM

Which tells you something about the reliability of Dictionary.com

JWBear 03-26-2010 10:51 AM

I got it from yourdictionary.com (the first link that came up when I googled it). This is what Merriam-Webster has:

Quote:

Main Entry: gad·a·rene
Pronunciation: \ˈga-də-ˌrēn\
Function: adjective
Usage: often capitalized
Etymology: from the demon-possessed Gadarene swine in Matthew 8:28 that rushed into the sea
Date: 1922

: headlong, precipitate <a gadarene rush to the cities>
