The Academy Gives the Cemetery a Run for its Movie Money

This summer, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka the Oscars) are premiering their own version of outdoor summer picnic movies, in yet another bid at competition with the Hollywood Forever Cemetery's decade-long success story.

The official press release lists the summer slate of movies, if you scroll down. One in late August is to be an Audience-Choice, not yet announced.

The screenings will be on Friday nights, so you could conceivably do the Oscars and the Cemetery in the same weekend! There's obviously less lead time on a Friday night, so there will be food trucks at the site - in case there's no time to put together a picnic of your own.

I know there have been less and less LoT excursions to the Cemetery screenings in recent years. What do y'all think of this new offering by the folks at Oscars?

The space now features an expansive lawn and an adjacent 10,000-square foot plaza, and will include a permanent 40x20 foot screen.
^That, right there, makes it more likely that I'd attend Academy screenings over the lumpy, bumpy, damp, projected-on-a-wall cemetery screenings.

You missed it first time around

but glad you're onboard now. Good film lineup, food trucks and good fun!

I like the food-truck thing. Won't have the atmosphere that the cemetery does, but maybe we'll be able to give it a try.

But to me it sounds like the "adjacent plaza" either won't have a view of the screen or it won't be a good view, which means you will probably still be on grass. Personally, I would rather be on grass than on concrete.

As far as the screen, while it will probably be better than Cinespia, it will still be a screen that can stand up to the elements, so it is still less than what you will experience in a regular theatre. While there will probably be a difference, it probably wouldn't be appreciable.

Not sure if you caught it, but the Oscar screenings are Friday AND Saturday.

I suspect that the Oscar viewings will have a more middle-of-the-road, family appeal whereas Cinespia will appeal to the (for lack of a better term) more artsy crowd. Hopefully (for the core Cinespia audience, the people selling tickets), the Oscar showings will help thin the Cinespia crowds a bit to make an excursion a little more palatable. Though I would like to check out at least one Oscar viewing. I think it is smart of them to bring in a couple of food trucks; Cinespia would be wise to do something similar.

FWIW, Cinespia is twice as much ($10 vs $5) and Cinespia charges $10 For parking (though you can park on the street for free) whereas Oscar parking is free.

ETA part deux: Cinespia has better movies IMHO

I really need to be doing something else

I noticed they have some photos. Based on the first one, the place looks quite small.
