Environmentally-Friendly Mass Burials?

Stand for the rest of eternity.

Bodies would be stored at a Melbourne morgue and transported to the site for burial in batches of 12 to 15 to minimise costs.

They would be encased in body bags and buried in individual pre-drilled three-metre-deep (10-foot) holes. The site would be returned to grazing land once it was stable, he said.

I think this is a terrific idea!

I really would prefer to be rolled in a shroud and tossed into the earth. I don’t think coffins and concrete containers do much for proper decomposition.

Of course, if I really had my druthers I’d be given a Viking’s funeral. Valhalla!

This is the Jewish stance. Cotton shroud and nothing else. Coffin made of ONLY wood, no metal or anything, and no tombs - just you and the earth.

I can dig it. I just wish the box didn't cost so damn much. But that's comfort for the living, which makes sense.

I don't dig being shat upon by cows in Melbourne. I'm all about creamation. Then you can dump me in the ocean or in the Sierras.

I want to be launched in a rocket ship - or scattered throughout the Haunted Mansion - of each Disney Park...

Kevy Baby 04-28-2005 08:31 PM

Yeah, torch me too. Don't care where I get scattered - I leave it up to my decendants to fight over that.

I hope I am able to build my own coffin (I enjoy woodworking). To some it sounds morbid, but the idea appeals to me for some reason. Nice simple pine box (ironically probably the only time I will work with pine!). Rope handles. Though I'll probably get a little fancy and dove-tail the joints.

I think I want to be cremated, but I might change my mind. If I do get cremated, I'd want to be interred, not scattered. There's a cemetery off a rural highway in Iowa in the midst of corn and soybean fields. The first time I remember going there was when we went to bury my grandfather. It's just one horseshoe drive around and back to the highway. We were driving in and I was checking out the tombstones -- and I realized that a good many of them were my ancestors. This wasn't just a random cemetery, it was the Family Cemetery. It was eerie, but in a comforting way -- all those Bloods and Peters and Millers and Freels. I've been back once to visit my grandfather's headstone (it's great -- carved ears of corn) and once to bury my grandmother. I need to go back and see the headstone since they've added her name. It's such an odd but wonderful feeling to be there -- out on the plains, the sound of wind and the highway mixing with the sounds of crickets, surrounded by "my people." I could just sit there for hours talking to them all.

I want my decendants to have the same kind of place to go to and feel that sense of peace and belonging.

I want my body to be placed sitting upright in a chair, and 50 sticks of dynamite strapped to me... BLAM!!!!

Either that, or I wanna have my body launched with one of those huge punkin' chunkin' air cannons into the ocean.

I wish to be cremated and spread upon the ocean

€uro, we're thinking along the same lines. I've already given instructions for Heather to scatter my ashes in WDW's Seven Seas Lagoon.
