The Golden Globes

My first for award season. It's been a weird year for me filmwise, I've seen next to nothing that has been nominated.

The telecast was fun, as usual. My favorite moment, was, naturally Emma Thompson. Swank personified with martini in hand and shoes for tossing, expensive (and painful looking) shoes, too.

Thanks to a glance at HuffPo, I see she's on a campaign to stop wearing stupidly high, painful heels. Good for her!

So I am asking those who've seen more films, how well balanced were the awards?

I've seen most of the award films but didn't see the Golden Globes so can't say.

I know 12 Years a Slave won for drama and I thought that was an effective movie. I know American Hustle won for comedy/musical and a) there is really nothing comedic about the movie and two while I enjoyed much of it it I didn't think it really had much reason for existing.

I haven't seen many movies lately. Alex any that you would recommend?

Her, very good

American Hustle is certainly worth seeing

All is Lost

Captain Phillips if you can find it

Dallas Buyers Club though it isn't in many theaters anymore

Nebraska (though this one I respected more than liked)

Thank you - now to find time to actually go to the movies.

Nothing comedic in American Hustle? You weren't watching the same movie as I did.

Interesting - of people I know who have seen it there seem to be two camps. It's not a comedy or it's hilarious.

Is there a correlation between age and those two groups?

Oh, and only one mention and no wins for Saving Mr. Banks?

Bullspit! These award shows are obviously rigged by people that see more movies that I do. Bastards.

There was amusement in American Hustle, but not comedy. But that's an issue I've always had with the Comedy Drama split. Rather than awarding comedies they end up rewarding dramas that induce the occasional grin.

Yes, the opening scene with the hairpiece is amusing. There are other amusing moments. But the movie is still not a comedy.

This is also true of Her and Nebraska. Both films with amusing moments, but not comedies. I haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street, but based on what I heard of DiCaprio's speech assume he also doesn't think he made a comedy. Similarly, Inside Llewyn Davis is not a musical, it is a movie with music in it.

But of the four movies in the category that were apparently nominated based on their comedicness I suspect that American Hustle was the closest of them.
