One to Beam Up

James Doohan, better known as "Scotty," passed away this morning. Or, as my huband put it, beamed up to the Celestial Enterprise.

Go boldly, Scotty. Go Boldly.

You beat me to it (and came up with a better thread title).

He'll be missed.

Moonliner 07-20-2005 11:12 AM

Yea, I would have went with "He's dead Jim".

I met the guy back in the 80's and he looked on his last legs then. Warp speed to ya Scotty!

Cadaverous Pallor 07-20-2005 11:16 AM

:( I'll miss him.

Had had the wonderful opportunity to both meet and work with Jimmy Doohan and I can tell you he was just as warm and gracious (if not more so) in real life as everyone says he was.

He will be sorrowfully missed.

Damn, now two of my favorites from the show are gone. A sad day indeed.

Not Afraid 07-20-2005 11:36 AM

But, who will play the bagpipes at his funeral?????

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 07-20-2005 03:40 PM

Oh, no!

Oh. Sadness.

Interesting, did anyone ever notice that he was missing a finger?

Quote:

At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. "The sea was rough," he recalled. "We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans."

The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.

You may find some solace in the knowledge that Doohan and said finger have been re-united in Heaven.
