Giant Squid photographed in the wild

A Japanese team of scientists has managed to get the first ever image of a giant squid in the wild.

I think this is really amazing news. Ralphie is going to be really excited about this one when he reads his email on his research cruise. (He's a marine biologist who studies the immune systems of squid.)

Coooool!

Cool video. I had seen the pics yesterday, but not the video - thanks for the link.

This is very cool! Creatures of the deep have always fascinated me. I'm surprised neither of the scientists were named Nemo though. ;)

On a related note.can someone tell my how these two news stories are related?

It's a little known fact that Jennifer Jason Leigh used to be called 'Squid Girl' in high school by her friends.
:D

Hehe, that's funny. I bit and clicked the link. Subtitle to the story is "Star reportedly wed ‘The Squid and the Whale’ director Noah Baumbach". So there ya' go. Squid.

OK. There are two things about these reports that concern me.
  1. The photo caption says that the giant squid is tangled up in the line. That's usually not a good thing for a sea creature.
  2. The video shows a tenticle laying on the table in the lab the reporter states that the researcher first noticed that "This giant tenticle had gripped onto his research vehicle".
Did the squid die after being tangled? How did they get the tenticle? Is the squid still freely terrorizing Nemo somewhere in the deep?

Edit: I suppose if I read the entire BBC article, I'd get the story, huh?

The squid finally escaped, but lost a tentacle.

Ghoulish Delight 09-28-2005 10:42 AM

Yeah, the report is a bit sketchy. I read a different account that simply said the squid was going after some bait on the line, not that it was tangled in it. And I'm pretty sure the tentacle on the table is a file-photo. (the caption mentions it's from the Royal Society via Reuters).

Now I want to see a Colossal Squid!

The World Book Encyclopedias I had growing up had a great overlay map of the creatures of the sea. The deep sea overlay was always my favorite. Fascinating stuff!

Ursula lives!

( i wonder how long before Sactown claims he has a colossal squid?)
