The Iron Giant @ Target for $7.99

I've been wanting to see this film - being one of Brad Bird's first (if not THE first) but hadn't gotten around to it. Imagine my squeel of delight when, in the impulse buy section near the register I saw a copy of it for $7something. It's a Special Edition even.

So, if you have been looking for it, go to Target!

It's a truly wonderful film, both visually and story-wise. It's a study how to NOT let the medium overshadow the need to make a good movie. Mixing cutting-edge computer animation with traditional hand animation, there was potential for visual and narrative disaster. But there isn't a gimicky moment in the film, it's a gem.

Is it the widescreen/letterbox version of it? I hope so.

Yes, and it's got a really cool commentary by Bird and others, plus storyboarded sequences of deleted scenes. I bought it even though I already own the previously released, no-frills edition. I'm going to give that one to zapppop, because he's never seen the movie. That must be remedied - - it's a triumph. (I think I can convince him to watch it based on his love of Bird's later work, that Incredisomething movie.)
