Stern's feelings hurt

http://www.nbc4.tv/entertainment/8435886/detail.html

Quote:

Stern bolted for Sirius Satellite Radio in January, and he deems the low amount of listeners an insult.

"It's insulting to me that everyone hasn't come with me," Stern told Entertainment Weekly. "I take it personally."
Whaaa, cry me a river.

Now that just makes my day :)

Wrongwrongwrong.

This quote was taken waaaay out of context from an interview he did with Entertainment Weekly.

He talked about it this morning. If you read the EW story or listen to him on Sirius, you'd know how silly this spin is.

Here is the EW article.

(I'm too ADD to read it.)
:D

Does it bother you that most of your fans haven't followed you to Sirius?
I was just at my psychiatrist and I said, ''I just got great news: We hit the 4 million mark. And I'm angry. It should be 20 million.'' It's insulting to me that everyone hasn't come with me. I take it personally. The competitive thing is a sickness that eats at me. I want to say to my audience in this article, ''F--- you! You haven't come with me yet? How dare you?'' [Laughs] ''We're up to wild, crazy stuff, the show has never sounded better. You cheap bastard!''
Here's the direct quote from the interview.

GD. Really.

He wasn't talking about the number of people that came, he was talking about his own mania. That's why he said "I was talking to my psychiatrist."

Clearly you're not a fan. That's obvious.

Before this turns into another 't-shirt ripoff' thread, I should let you know that I am a fan. I have listened to the show consistently for over 20 years. I read the article in EW and I listened (am listening) to today's show. The context is wrong.

You could either defend your OP or let it drop. Your choice. But you need to know that in this case, once again, if the intention of the smarmy OP was an "us vs them", I'm a "them" here.

What I think is interesting about the article is the question immediately beforehand. He is making an assumption that the increase from 600K subscribers to 4M subscribers is directly attributable to him signing in October of 2004. I have no doubt that is a part of it, but I think you could attribute just as much if not more of it to the fact that so many new vehicle sales include satillite radios in the vehicle, often including a free subscription for a year as an incentive.

I know you're fan, and I don't have anything against his fans. And I've generally respected his stance against the FCC. I just think he's arrogant and was taking a cheap shot at people who aren't big enough fans to pay for him. Maybe it's a case of me once again not getting his humor, but if I WERE someone who used to listen but stopped because I didn't want to pay for it, well, a comment like that wouldn't exactly make me run out and subscribe. But if you're telling me that said "cheap bastards" would "get it", then I *shrug*

How is it an "us vs. them" thing? He doesn't like Howard Stern and thinks he's being a baby. I happen to agree with you that he's probably just being himself and not lashing out at his former audience. Not that I've ever listened to him, but I would figure he surely knew that switching to satillite would result in a huge decrease in audience, and his competiveness and expectations of himself makes him want a more rapid increase.

You obviously haven't been on the "other side' of many postings here. So someone doesn't like someone you do. Welcome to my world as a republican posting on this board! Don't take it as "us vs. them".

mousepod 04-03-2006 09:37 AM

scaeagles -

I was referring specifically to a post I made in a thread GD started about some clothing that was on sale at WoD, that's all.

If GD thought that Stern was being a baby as a result of reading that news story, he'd be right. The story was a spin job.

Since he chose to post the thread in the Beatnik ("Anything cool and creative - art, music, literature...") forum, I just felt the need to let him know that he shouldn't expect everyone to just post "yeah, neat." or "well spotted" replies.

As far as the political stuff - I love that you take the "them" stance as often as you do. As silly as I find most politicians and their party lines - I think that your presence on the boards adds a dimension that would otherwise be sorely missed. I understand the Republican POV better when you explain it than when Fox News tries to.

...and as long as I'm in butt-kissing mode, I think GD's a very cool cat, too. Which is why it's frustrating when he not only doesn't "get" something that I find to be absolutely wonderful, but chooses to parrot the lame "anti" statements that are so so easy and cheap.

Blah.
