Gene Pitney dies at 65
story here
I first discovered Gene Pitney through cover versions of his songs: Nick Cave singing "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" and John Otway doing "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". A 2-LP Rhino "best-of" clued me in to the genius that Gene had as a performer. While he hadn't had any hits in the last several years, he was and continues to be an important part of my iPod rotation. Give a listen to "Town Without Pity", shed a tear and remember the man. I know I will. Town Without Pity mp3 |
Oh wow! I had almost forgotten about Gene Pitney. I "discovered" him in the early 80's when my interest in alternative Punk and it's ilk got me exploring other genres. Somehow or other, his name and music faded from my life and I'm not sure why. I'm saddened by his early death but I think it's time to dust off some vinyl. Thanks for the link, MP.
