Well, um, I disagree.

I will remain ever optimistic that we can choose to continue to grow and evolve as individuals. I believe no one can take that away from us unless we choose to allow them to do so.

That's why I said "humankind" and not "humans".

As for whether that's sad or not...I think it's simply a fact and not something to feel sorry for ourselves over. What we need to do is figure out what we can affect and work on that.

Oh, and you can add to the list things like:

as ugly
as cruel
as indecisive
--
That way it's more obvious that we may be as good as we'll ever be but we won't get any worse either.

Again, I would have to disagree.

For example, Humankind has in the past had a far greater belief of some humans being superior over others (slavery, caste systems, etc). While this idea is not completely eliminated in modern times, the practice of it (and belief in it) is just a shadow of what was believed and practiced in the past.

Humankind is the sum of its humans. Maybe I am missing the point, but I believe that if the parts are improving, the aggregate must as well.

Nazi Germany was long after we thought we had moved past such idiocy. There is still plenty of hatred and superiority complexes out there, and there are still plenty of people working at slave wages. Port cities in Greek times were areas of multiculturalism, tolerance and enlightenment. The world is a big pendulum, and no matter where or when you live, the opposite is happening somewhere else. Do you think that the situation in a country like Cuba, for example, where people would risk themselves on makeshift rafts across the sea just to leave, are any better than the living conditions in any other epoch? There are millions living in conditions every bit as horrid as any period in history, right this minute.
