Alice stumbled up the stairs
First
The smell of vodka clearing a path
Announcing her arrival.
Her friends came in
The other side
Quietly
Keeping to themselves

She announced her love for
The person on the opposite end
Of her cell phone
And confessed,
“I’m breaking up with Chris”

Once she hung up she wasted no time
Introducing herself to the hansom
Young man
On the platform
Whose name
Ironically
Was Chris

She called to the others,
“I’m such a bad friend”
To lure them
and their sympathy.
Quietly
They complied



Shelby –
or was she really Amanda?
Stopped to take pictures
With her sister
Or was she really her cousine?
When a boisterous frat boy
Offered to help and tease her
About her fake ID

Her sister/cousin claimed to be 23
And a mom
With baby photos to prove it
But that was unnecessary as her
Face showed the age of a
Childhood cut short
By unexpected
Responsibility

Shelby –
or was she really Amanda?
Claimed to be 21
A story certainly believed
By the last bar she had visited
But the frat boy thought her younger
And forced her confession
While filling her camera with photos
For her My Space Page

When asked my opinion
I said 19 or 20
But I thought
Young
Much too young



The girl on the train
Remained silent
Never revealing her name
Ashen blond with a pallor
Goths would die for
But only obtainable
From true melancholy.

She looked at me
But gazed past me
With sunken eyes
No longer capable of crying
She just wanted to get home
As did I
But she more desperately
Standing
When seats were available
Just so she could be first
Out the door
