Happy Stonewall Day!

For those of you who don't know (on this board, all six of you), the modern gay rights movement started 27 years ago in a drag bar in New York City called the Stonewall Inn.

I tip my hat to those pissed off queens who had the cajones to not stand for the cop's crap any more!

It was also rumored to be triggered by the death of Judy Garland ;)

Cheers to those of you who have made your way to be yourselves with the multitude of obstacles that were placed upon you in your younger days.

As the resident fag hag of my neighboorhood Act Up! group, I have seen a great amount change in the last 20+ years with regard to tolerance, and acceptance.
To those who started the movement, a toast, for your sincere bravery.

The Stonewall riot, while significant, wasn’t the first. There was one 3 years earlier at Gene Compton’s Café in San Francisco. Also, the gay rights movement didn’t start with Stonewall – homosexual rights groups were in existence long before – but it did give them a big boost.

The first gay pride parade was held to commemorate the one year anniversary of Stonewall.

YAY for ALL of the progress and BOO to the detractors who need to get with the program.

I agree. The emphasis placed on the word "modern" in my original post was intended to suggest that. Daughters of Bilitis and the Mattachine Society (to mention just a couple) were around long before the Stonewall Rebellion.
