I was reading the posts from Alex's link above. I was amused by this one (in describing another spider):
I have this odd vision of a pretentious, fashion slave spider that would feel right at home at "Mode" magazine (from Ugly Betty).

It's ok. The really big ones can't generally jump farther than 2 or 3 feet.

So if we stay 1 foot away, we'll be safe.
