Atomic Ranch - Mid-Century Marvels

I subscribed to this wonderful magazine a year or so ago (Mrs. Boss Radio drew it to my attention). It's all about mid-Century Modernism, the houses, the decor, the restoration and more. I love to look at MCM architecture and, especially, decor. It is not something I personally could live with, but I do have a high appreciation for the style.

So, my Summer issue came yesterday and it is FILLED with coolness. There is a spread about a Cliff May house in Long Beach (the same architect that designed Ollie Johnston's house and that JW Bear loves), a spread about Wexler Steel houses in Palm Springs and a spread about 2 ex-Disney Imagineers who have a cool MCM house in Sacramento with a "tiki room" backyard.

If you subscribe, watch your mail. If you don't, see if you can find a copy (it is hard to locate). Good stuff!

That is very cool! I love the aesthetic, but like you, not sure I could live in it (or in my case, maintain it, I'm far too sloppy for such a crisp look)

I do love the look of the architecture and love the local stuff here your original link took me too as I searched. Littleboxes in Daly City and the Westlake historical site is cool, shows construction and vintage pics.

Thanks Lisa... You reminded me that I need to renew my subscription!

I'm going to have to look for this magazine when I make my weekly trip to the gigantic indoor newsstand tonight (it's new magazine Thursday!!) :)

I'm curious & it sounds like quite a fascinating read! :) If anything, I have to glimpse through it (if I should find it on the stand, and this newsstand seems to have every popular & obscure magazine & paper on the planet!) What I really want to see is the "Tiki Room" backyard. What features did it have from the Tiki Room? What did it look like? I really wanna know!

(However, I'm not going to lie- I spend most of my time at the newsstand leafing through Tiger Beat, Soldier Of Fortune & High Times giggling like a 12 yr. old boy. I've always wanted to leave that combination of magazines, along with copies of Black Inches & Beaver Hunt in my bathroom just to get a completely freaked-out & mortified reaction of visiting guests. Haha!)

Oh yeah -- love this magazine! I subscribe and when I find the newest issue in my mailbox,it's like Christmas morning!!! They also have a coffee table book!

Okay, major props to Lisa, because I purchased Atomic Ranch yesterday at the newsstand!! I can't wait to read it! I leafed through it briefly this morning, but there's still so much that I haven't seen! :) :snap:

I love new suggestions! I would have never known about this magazine, and now I do! I love trying new & different things. :)

Thank you again, NA!

Ooh! I have a question! I purchased the Summer 2007 edition. Is that the issue with the Tiki Room backyard? There's this awesome home in Long Beach in the beginning of the magazine that I thought was just stunning. That's as much as I got to see, however!

Newsstand Adventure Side Note: Yes, I did leaf through High Times & Soldier Of Fortune giggling like a high schooler. I made my way to Tiger Beat, but I got the feelin' my boyfriend wanted to go, so, you know, I'll have to leaf through it next time. Too bad, too. I'm sure I missed out on all things Hannah Montana & Chad Michael Murray. :D

In risk of offending, I won't say it. ;)

Love you, Ally! :snap:
