What in the world have you done?!

It was brought up in Sooo...

And it makes sense to explore the odd jobs we've had.

While I haven't washed dead people, nor have I sold non-existent gold - I've had a few jobs that don't exactly make a straight line on any grid.

Things I've Done (in semi-chronological order):

I was a fishing and lures expert. <cough>
Made pizza and sammiches.
Worked at a salon that specialized in high-end hairpieces
Worked at a hostess in Newport when it was super chi-chi to be there.
Worked at 24 Hour Fitness (5 years.. what the?)
Was a Dental Assistant (What? 5 years? How old am I?)
Worked for Peets (and loved it! Well, most of it.)
Freelance writer (that's right...)

Please, I know I'm actually not that interesting.. tell me you gold-sellers, body washers and miscellany out there.. WHAT DO YOU DO? And what have you done?

Propigated and sold plants from my High School greenhouse (yes, I had permission!)

Mowed Lawns

Slung burgers at McD's (My job had a name "lay the meat")

Purchased plants for the garden Dept. at the city of Industry K Mart

Sold House plants for a small plant Store

Had my own business renting and maintaing plants in offices

Had a yard maintenance buisness

Was the "Head Compounder" for a cosmetic maunufacturer

Am now working for the cosmetic manufacturer as a formulating chemist (worked there 26 years)

Currently work a website business www.StarTownGifts.com

A few twists, but for the most part not too remarkable.

Now I'm depressed......;)

Jobs I've been paid for, in chronological order:

1. bookkeeping for an industrial sewing machine repair company (8th grade)
2. paper route (9th-10th grade)
3. public library page (11th-12th grade)
4. intramural activities instructor at a middle school (11th-12th grade)
5. Classroom assistant for a 2nd-3rd grade class for children with behavior problems (freshman year of college)
6. Night circulation clerk, Suzzallo Library Serials Department, University of Washington (final three years of college)
7. Bookkeeping for SeaGrant program at the University of Hawaii (first year of grad school).
8. Photograph archivist for some renal hospital in Hawaii (can't remember it's name).
9. Reference clerk, Science and Technology Department, Hamilton Library, University of Hawaii (second year of grad school).
10. Data entry and development of Library Aquaculture Workstation, a white and gray paper repository for Pacific Rim agriculturists (concurrent with previous).
11. Various temp jobs.
12. Administrative assistant in Community Lending Division, part of the Real Estate group, at Wells Fargo.
13. Integration Project Manager for wholesale banking portal in the Wholesale Group at Wells Fargo.
14. Front End Producer for wholesale banking portal in the Wholesale Group at Wells Fargo.
15. CEO of a small internet company.
16. Functional design for online banking products at a company I won't name.

Nothing very exciting. But I still have the streak alive of never having worked in food services nor had a job requiring I wear a name tag. If all goes well that'll be true when I die as well.

While the dead-washing is probably most unusual, here's the job list:
summer camp counselor
car wash cashier
cafeteria slave (at college #1)
restaurant management (how?)
yogurt pumper
birthday party hostess
licorice pizza slinger
data analyst/lab technician for environmental testing lab (yeah, that was a jump)
dead-person washer (at a "home")
made recordings of Shakespeare for blind college kids, and administered tests on same for same
barista
data controller and supervisor of records for state university (another weird leap)
research assistant
teaching assistant
teaching credential analyst
lecturer in linguistics
artist management
executive assistant at movie studio (another weird tangent)
currently writing a docutainment project

I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I also do freelance doodles. I'm all about the twists, I guess.

wendybeth 06-19-2007 11:23 PM

Also wanted to add- if we get to comparing weird stories, the night manager one has provided me with a great many.:D

lizziebith 06-19-2007 11:28 PM

Another fun tangent is how many of these actually end up on our resumes/CVs! In my case, about 5 do...

I have done most retail type posistions.

Ran box office a drive-inn
Back to original fast food place
plant technician for private company who stocked builder's Emporium
am/pm slave
peer tutor at college
private convience store slave
place fliers on cars (lasted less than a week-had to quit, too easy to toss flyers and lie about work done)
concession worker at convention center
flower tech at Conroy's
back to retail (Fashion Bug)
Fastrip slave
back to retail (Gottschalks)
retail asst manager (Petries Plus)
Toys R Us slave

MOM!!!!
CSR for Satan's Biggest Corporation
Customer Service Specialist for wholesale card company (psycho owner)
Event Coordinator (fancy way of saying party rental person)

Through college and beyond it was not uncommon for me to have 2-3 jobs at once.
My most rewarding job is being Nick's mom (except when he is a very angry boy and does something reallllllllllly bad~even though I understand why he did it, it doesn't make it right).
The jobs I enjoyed the most were working the convience stores. I loved seeing the same people every day.
I truly enjoy helping people, and just wish that SBC hadn't taken the service out in favor of sales, or I would still be there.
