Dumb Computer Question
I have been suffering with Windows ME. The thing freezes all the time along with other various issues.
If I upgrade to XP will I lose everything on my C drive? This has been the only thing keeping me from upgrading. After today I have had enough. |
An upgrade won't change anything but the OS.
...but you really ought to back up all your documents anyway. ...and when you upgrade to XP, make sure you install Service Pack 2. (all this from a mac user, go figure) |
hehehe I'm not worried about documents, I just don't want to lose my games.
 |
If you have the ability to back up all of your stuff to disk, I would definitely recommend it, regardless of how you approach this task. Once you have, it doesn't make much of a difference whether you do an upgrade or clean install. I've always preferred clean installs just because they seem to be smoother and I like feeling like I have a fresh start. I always find when I do one, that I tend to not put everything back that was there before. I just keep the backup disks handy for when I need to find a document.
You will be much happier once you get away from ME. I initially went from ME to win2000 and it was like night and day. Now with XP, the only time I ever have to reboot is when I choose to. It's never locked up. Good luck! |

I thought Service Pack two was a giant POS. Both Jeff Levy (KNX 1070) and our MIS guy say to stay away from it. |

Service Pack 2 isn't all that bad. It is really only a problem if you're dealing with a lot of IIS (web server) stuff or have some specific firewall issues. For most users, it's a non-issue and even the issues have work arounds.
|
I installed SP2 and have had no probs with it.

Thank you all for the advice. I really appreciate it. :)

SP2 is EXACTLY what MS said it would be, a BIG security upgrade, alot of new ins and outs with the firewall and the security center, and thats about it. Even if you are dealing with IIS stuff on XP, its really not all that hard to configure, its just not wide open by default like some people think it should be. |
