Chertoff Worries that U.S. Public "Not Frightened Enough"
Fearing complacency among the American people over possible terrorist threats, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Tuesday that his "spidey sense" was telling him that the nation faced a heightened chance of an attack this summer.
Chertoff recommended that the U.S. public should instead, "be frightened at all times." Chertoff said there were not enough indications of an imminent plot to raise the threat levels nationwide. He indicated that his remarks were based on "a gut feeling" formed by intelligence and his spidey sense. Chertoff revealed that his spidey "gut" tells him a lot of other things, such as when a crime is in progress or if it is going to rain. "Mostly, though, my gut tells me to eat spaghetti." We ought to be vigilent, yes (it's what got those cars in London spotted) but not afraid. Fear doesn't help anything. The only thing fear does is impel us to give more powers and liberties to our government, which has quite enough already, if you ask me.
