Yet another reason for €uro and NA to visit NYC

From yesterday's NY Times:

Quote:

...an emerging downtown trend, as cabaret acts superimpose a risqué German style onto the performance art and theater scene below 14th Street. “The Weimar aesthetic has taken over,” said Justin Bond, the torch singer who performs as the female half of Kiki & Herb, and belts the theme song for “Weimar New York,” the cabaret revue opening tonight at the Spiegeltent, near the South Street Seaport. (“Come pop your cork/Bring a dollar and a dream/It’s a mall where over all hangs a pall that enthralls/Weimar New York.”)
The whole story here.

That is a Wonderful photograph!
is it a press release photo?
Yeah yeah.. I know, I'm obsessing over little things. It just struck me.

Someone, go see this.

Ghoulish Delight 07-19-2007 08:35 AM

Damn, no October shows on the bill.

€uroMeinke 07-19-2007 05:56 PM

heh - I subscribe to a Weimar cabaret community in LJ and have noticed a lot of cool things happening in NYC in this vein. Of course, my true desire is not to just attend these shows, but to put some on (with dadaist smatterings a la Cabaret Voltaire).

Here's a posting from another venue (love the dress code):
Quote:

We invite all modern day flappers, dandies, crazies, crooks and ne'er-do-wells to join us in dancing to the hottest tunes of the Roaring Twenties, Dirty Thirties and Flying Forties from 10pm to 4am every third Saturday of the month at the Pussycat Lounge in New York City! There will be special performances planned for each evening, which will commence at 11:00pm. Dances of Vice not only aims to promote appreciation for the music and culture of the past, but will also feature music from contemporary musicians either influenced by music of the early century, or in the avant garde spirit of the period in general.

Requested Attire: 1920-40s vintage, Avant Garde, Victorian, Edwardian, Steampunk, Decadent, etc- dress to impress! An additional entry fee will be charged for attendees in casual attire.

When do you want to go? Of course then there's a question of what to wear? that might cost more than airfare...

Prudence 07-19-2007 06:58 PM

That does it - when this quarter's over I'm breaking out that Victorian riding habit pattern.

Babette 07-19-2007 09:57 PM

Missed it by this much!

Ghoulish Delight 07-19-2007 10:24 PM

And we already booked our flights (although since they don't go through Chicago, it wouldn't have done us any good)

blueerica 07-19-2007 11:22 PM

Wow, thems is some good deals on Virgin. Too bad they don't go to the boonies...
