How about a tasty kangaroo steak?

Pardon my ignorance, but I had no idea that kangaroo was meat commonly consumed. I read this article about global warming, and learned that "Roughly three million kangaroos are killed and harvested for meat each year". I had no idea.

Has anyone here ever had kangaroo meat? What's it like? Don't tell me it tastes like chicken. I might have to see if I can find some kangaroo meat on the internet and have it shipped to me so I can try it.

Exotic Meats

compares it to venison
I knew it was eaten fairly frequently, but Ive not had the pleasure.

I've been looking around since I posted that. In my short searching time I haven't found a reasonable price on getting some shipped to Phoenix. That site I could get 2 lbs of kangaroo loin shipped to me for a total of about $60. Pricey, but I'm curious enough to perhaps do it. I've tried pretty much everything in terms of game, but never that.

yeah, reasonable might be the hardest part of getting it.

why the interest in kanga-steaks?

of the known oddball meats, Ive had
ostrich
buffalo
squirrel (sorry Ponine)
rabbit (sorry Jen)
rattlesnack ;)
quail
frog
horse (dont ask)
bear
goat
gator (forgot about that one)
and nearly every sea creature known to be edible (product of a japanese mother)

Because, like you, I've tried pretty much everything. Not the horse, but everything on your list plus squab, elk, deer, javalina (wouldn't recommend it - it's like jerky without even cooking it), several other kinds of birds, and lots of seafood.

My interest comes from my ignorance of not knowing I could eat kangaroo.

Take off the horse and squirrel and add Wild Boar, Elk, & Deer and I'm with you there. But, I've never had Roo. Or Nutrea.

Capt Jack 10-10-2007 07:20 PM

lol....Ive heard that about javalina. elk and venison Ive yet to get my hands on. which is just sad

(the horse was a sad tale of trusting youthful stupidity and a really mean uncle...who paid a heavy price for his sense of humor)
if you do I'll be curious to hear your take.

Doesn't Fuddrucker's serve a kangaroo burger?

I've had it. It was meat. I've also eaten emu, ostrich, buffalo, moose, salmon, turkey, and alligator in burger (ground meat) form. In fact, I've eaten all of those in burger form more recently than beef, which I last had in October 1992.

I've eaten other exotic meats (including dog), but not in burger form.

scaeagles 10-10-2007 07:56 PM

Never had dog. We have a Fuddruckers near our house we've eaten at, and that one doesn't have a kangaroo burger.

LSPoorEeyorick 10-10-2007 08:28 PM

I have eaten Roo. Down under. It was more like... lamb... than chicken.
