The Burning Bush
Apparently, El Presidente is coming to visit San Diego in a couple more days.
I have to agree with most of these comments: San Diego Fire Blog |
*Shrug* I'm sure the same people who are making the "Gee, two days after the fact, big whoop" comments would be saying, "Great, he's just going to get in the way" if he were to fly out today.
This is his job as Figurehead in Chief of the country. Coming out now would be pointless and would indeed be getting in the way. But declaring it a federal emergency and then not coming out at all would be deemed insensitive. So he comes out when his presence won't be a disruption to do the usual Presidnetial thing of getting a first-hand overview, talk to the people in charge, and be informed. I'm never one to pass up the chance to criticize the twerp when he deserves it, I don't see this as deserving it. His response to this has been exactly what a President's response should be. |
Ah, you do make good points, GD.

What GD said. This is probably one of the very few times I think he is doing the right thing.
And can I just add kudos to the Governator for quickly declaring a state of emergency to get the federal aid and assistance rolling? |
Yes, I agree he should show his face. I also think that, despite it's being his rightful duty to do so, his particular presence in such a situation is a reminder of his administration's disgusting failures at national natural disaster relief.

Can't help wondering if Bush shouldn't hold off a couple extra days though, especially since he's going to San Diego and they're probably still going to be burning at that time. Like others have said... resources needed to defend homes from the fire shouldn't be used protecting him.
But at least he is holding off. |

This is the photo that NBC 4 decided to use for their story about Bush arriving in California...
