On the loud stereos thing we once heard a story on NPR (and here is how sad my place memory is: we were listening to it in a rental car while we parking at Animal Kingdom Lodge on our way in to eat dinner at Boma...4 years ago) about a competition for decibel levels reached by such installations.

The systems involved were so loud that competition rules required being able to control the stereo by remote control since you weren't allowed to actually be in the car at the same time the stereo was on due to immediate irreversible tissue damage that would be caused.

yup. theyre usually measured by a decible reading taken on the outside of the windshield...which is specially installed to keep it from being blown out.
