Admittedly, a major contemporary author I haven't ever read. Anyone have any favorites to recommend?

(FWIW, I saw the TV movie of The Executioner's Song, but that doesn't really count.)

It's been a long time, but given the beat/swank focus of this board, I would recommend his essay "The White Negro."
