Benazir Bhutto killed at rally

She was shot twice before the attacker blew himself up. Supporters are claiming the government refused to provide requested levels of security.

This does not bode well.

Oh My Fvcking God!!

I am too unbelievably shocked and appalled and saddened and, um, worried.

Um, Pakistan tinderbox much??

Snowflake 12-27-2007 08:45 AM

Well, this makes me sad, I was hopeful that she'd be elected and survive. Charismatic woman and I had hope. Damn.

Yes, tinderbox is a good word.

Frightening news. I'm saddened but I'm also filled with trepidation.

Alex 12-27-2007 10:07 AM

Not unexpected but sad. I really hope it doesn't turn out that Musharraf was behind it.

Morrigoon 12-27-2007 10:27 AM

Oh please, you know he is... whether he gets caught or not is another story. He's been trying to put off the elections for some time. Guess he gets his wish now.

But like any good politician, he's expressing "regret" and telling the populace to calm down.

Hope this doesn't turn out like Archduke Ferdinand.

Alex 12-27-2007 10:31 AM

Not necessarily. The several groups that have tried to assassinate Musharraf over recent years would like Bhutto even less. Just because it isn't a bad thing for him doesn't mean he coordinated it. It also doesn't mean he is upset about it.

But no, I'd not bet any money on whether he was involved.

I don't see how it could possibly be a Archduke Ferdinand situation. There is no easily triggered cascade of mutual defense agreements involved. Ferdinand may have been the trigger for WWI but he really wasn't the cause.

Morrigoon 12-27-2007 10:39 AM

Good point... but the area is such a tinder box already, I think the potential is there.

true enough, not to mention it would of course be the first thing a great many folk would assume, and would be damaging Musharraf regardless of what could or couldnt be proven. the seed of doubt would be well planted as well as serving to focus attention on him and away from those truly involved.

however Musharraf does stand to, in some ways benefit from it and a conspiracy on his part isnt out of the question by any means

regardless. its a freakin' mess
