Wow, as if it weren't bad enough just trying to get our human rights established. Oi, the mishmash that's going to be in place during all the decades while that happens.

I never thought about most of this stuff. Very educational. But certainly the few gay couples who got married in Massachusetts did not imagine their troubles were over!

Real simple solution: abolish government recognition of marriage. Gay or straight, the decision to marry is one that would be personal. Between two people, or two people and their god or whatever floats your boat.

Of course this would also do away with such unpleasantness as alimony, IRS tax loopholes and penalties, and long messy legal divorce proceedings. This would obviously change how things such as healthcare function and folks would need to be more proactive with their responsibilities as it regards wills and the like.

Yeah, it's never going to happen and would likely be as difficult as getting the IRS to recognize gay marriage, but a boy can dream can't he? Ah one more thing in life free of governmental oversight.

Ugh straight divorce is awful enough (I hate hate *hate* family law) but this just seems like nightmare territory to me.

Maybe this will actually further the arguments in favor of gay marriage though, because the diffculties in gay divorces are on a mostly financial and legal standpoint, removing the "morality" argument entirely. It argues that marriage is a legal and financial relationship for setting up a joint household.

“The privilege of being gay was that you didn’t have to get married or have kids. Now Provincetown will be the new Niagara Falls, and gays have more babies than Catholics.” - John Waters on Fresh Air

I love John Waters.
